The better Botham

I guess it was a matter of time, really, before someone on the basis of the Edgbaston Test suggested that Freddy Flintoff was not just the next Botham, but in fact the better, improved, V.2.1 version of Beefy; Richard Hobson in the Times makes the comparison, with a lot of statistics throw in to support it.
Also in the Times, the latest Shane Warne column, that talks of what the Aussie tail was thinking about during the late innings heroics at Edgbaston. Warne being who and what he is, he can't resist ending an otherwise admiring-of-England column with a little dig, though:
It was interesting to read that England have been practising against a machine called Merlyn that reproduces leg spin. I reckon I’ve found a new buddy. Good on you, Merlyn — judging by some of the results, you’re on my side. In fact, if Strauss is still in after five or six overs, I might be thrown the ball earlier than usual.
I thought in a county game this season, when he tried to reverse sweep, that Strauss didn’t have much of a plan. Nothing has made me change my mind. Some of the batsmen tried to be more positive in the first innings, but it becomes harder after day one and to finish with ten wickets suggests I didn’t do too badly overall.

  • Prem,

I have to thank you for introducing me (and the rest of us) to Martin Johnson's columns. The guy is a riot.

On a related note, the commentary for the Ashes could not have been more different from the painfully cheesy banter from Rameez, Srinath and Sanjay.

When asked by Beefy, you his choice for Man of Match was, Nasser sounding ever so righteous-

*Without a doubt, the man of the match has to Steve Rouse, the head groundsman . All that talk about hurricanes and flooded pitches...Ricky Ponting bought right into it*

That was the gist of it, don't remember the exact words. Nasser and Holding were fantastic.
