India-SL Finals thread

Good morning, all. D-Day for the Indian Oil Cup... Lanka to bat first, with Vaas back in the side and, per the team list, Mahela Jayawardene opening and Sanath Jayasuriya coming one drop; India finally opting for the 5-1-5 formula with two spinners and three seamers playing behind five batsmen and keeper Dhoni... it's set up to be an interesting contest. Calls for coffee... see you guys back here as the match begins

  • morning prem
hopefully this one goes better than the other outings.
I do wish we had won the toss with te 5-1-5 combo
    ah well!!!

    By Blogger KB, at 04:15

  • Prem, hi.

Five bowlers Prem. I hope for everything good and great in cricket India wins. Just so that this policy is not relegated to "tried - didn't work" file.

By Blogger Shakeel Abedi, at 04:16

  • I think the 5 bowlers have to get SL out within 200, whatever be the state of the wicket. Only then India have a chance to win the match.

Prem: Is the REDIFF Commentary you were doing previously discontinued? That was really a good thing we had.

    By Blogger madhugr, at 04:18

  • Good morning all:

I am afraid, loosing the toss was a big loss, given that we have opted to play with 5 bolwers.

Out of the five regular batsmen, VS and SCG are out of form (the first few overs of Sunday match are a testament). Chasing with only three batsmen in form can be quite difficult.

I am sorry to say this, but I don't feel good about our (India) chances of pulling this match off.

    By Blogger Ram, at 04:21

  • Madhu: Not *discontinued*, no, but I am in the US and can't do that live thing as easily from here.. I'd think for something like the ICC Trophy, say, we would revive it with me back in GHQ for it.

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 04:21

  • Ram: Is the same thought I had when I saw the team list and then the toss went the other way -- but take a deep breath for a moment... if you are a touch understaffed in batting, wouldn't you rather go in knowing what target you were chasing, so you could plan the chase accordingly?

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 04:23

  • Hats off to GC and RD for picking this team. Finally, a balance in both departments.
No way should this attack allow SL to score above 200.
Come on India win this one now.

    By Blogger AA, at 04:23

  • finally india play with 5 bowlers.. hope it works out well. anyway, an unrelated question on super subs that i saw in some other thread. team being, six batsmen, five bowlers, and a batsman as super sub. if india bats first, and are in trouble, the author suggested we drop one of the bowlers and get the super sub in. my question is, can we drop one of the out batsmen, and get the super sub to bat? ditto while bowling, can we substitute a bowler who has completed his quota, and get the bowler supersub to bowl, in case we go with 4 bowlers? never seen any thought in that direction.. just wanted to know ur views..

    By Blogger puranjoy, at 04:24

  • Batting looks fragile. If at all five bowlers to be played, the fifth bowler should've been an allrounder, JP Yadav.

    By Blogger Anurag, at 04:25

  • Yes, I agree with you Prem

(By the way, I am in Bangalore now, at work though, so have to follow the match through Crickinfo)

I am not sure Dhoni will click...especially against the likes of Murali and Jayasurya.

I will send him at the top, with Viru....

We got to keep the target realistic, say 220 or so.

If we have to chase a huge target, I am afraid, a wicket here and there will make things look very different. Yes, chasing in a planned manner may not work out.

    By Blogger Ram, at 04:26

  • Pathan will give u 25-30 runs at No.7 and is a better bowler than Yadav.

    By Blogger AA, at 04:27

  • Hello Prem, 5-5-1 came a bit late i suppose...would be tough to chase anything more than 220 with this line-up...bit too much expect guys like Kaif & Yuvraj to deliver on their own in consecutive matchecs?! safer bet would've been JP for Nehra/Zaheer?...

By Blogger mohd iqbal, at 04:27

  • Prem,
I think the Indians have got it right. They are playing with specialists. Now lets see where this takes us.

    By Blogger Hitender, at 04:27

  • hey guys.. first time on willow. how do i use the scorecard display thingy?
    Love the 5-1-5 team.

By Blogger losing now, at 04:28

  • Agree with Anurag 100%.

We should have gone with JPY instead of Zaheer. He hasn't done that well in this tourny.

    By Blogger Ram, at 04:28

  • puranjoy: You can use the supersubs this way: Assuming this is the team we pick: (1) In the first innings, if your five regular batsmen are screwing up, you can withdraw one bowler and insert a batsman; (2) You can withdraw a batsman mid-innings, if he is out there and not doing well, and have supersub complete his innings; (3) You can pull out a bowler not doing well, and have the supersub complete that bowler's quota; (4) You can insert a bowler for a batsman who has completed his innings (for instance, assume India was batting first, you could have when chasing pulled out any of the top five batsmen, brought in your supersub, and taken the field with six bowlers if you wanted to.

There are other possible permutations, but these are the key ones

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 04:29

  • Hows the pitch like for this match??

    By Blogger AA, at 04:29

  • Cricket is a game of specialists - Imran Khan. But regardless, the batting looks fragile and don't be surprised to see Indian making 20 odd runs and down with two wickets. I would have preferred JP Yadav to play this one. And can 5 specialist batsman really work, especially when Tendulkar is fit? Who are they going to drop?

    By Blogger jgohil, at 04:30

  • Iqbal: Problem is, not having tried JPY, it would have been a gamble going into the final. I would have preferred Yadav too, but pragmatically, the risk seems too huge -- especially when te pressure is added to by not having tried him thus far, and then pitchforking the lad into a game like this

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 04:30

  • Drop Ganguly or Sehwag when SRT returns. On current form, both these guys suck in ODIs.

    By Blogger AA, at 04:31

  • even more bad news, looks like.

Seems like Pathan went through a fitness test in the morning! Can't be good ....can't be good.

If Sunday match is anything to go by, the pitch is not that bad, from a run-making point of view.

    By Blogger Ram, at 04:32

  • Jay: Oh that bit is simple -- the best five batsmen, on form. :-) We think of that question only because we are looking at the names/faces of the players. If we go with the base thought that we can pick only five, we force ourselves to ignore personalities and their respective fans/sponsors, and pick the top five, period

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 04:32

  • that was close..

By Blogger losing now, at 04:32

  • should have tried this earlier in the tournament...team would've known what to expect...more importantly, batsmen would've been alerted...poor management?!

By Blogger mohd iqbal, at 04:32

  • Pity, a bit tough to give that, since without the hawkeye stuff you would think it was marginally drifting down leg.

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 04:33

  • I think JP Yadav deserved ONE chance in this tournament. Ironical that Dravid, who doesnt let out promises easily, actually did promise atleast 1 game for all in this tournament.

Were we afraid to field JP Yadav against WI? What do you think, Prem?

By Blogger Shankar Anand, at 04:33

  • I remember India trying Salvi only in the fianl against Aus in TVS Cup in 03. The chap hadn't played any matches in the tournament and was picked for the final. It turned out to be a disaster with Salvi going for 25 from 3 odd overs. Maybe thats what stopped the management from picking JP for the final

    By Blogger AA, at 04:33

  • but that is exactly what we want. If a player is ready for the international scene then it doesnt really matter what game he plays. Playing Yadav in the final is the best possible way to gauge a new player and see how he performs. Or woudl you rather him playing with minnows like Zimbabwe where he can make 60+ runs and everyone will say what a good find he is, only to fail when he plays against the big boys.

    By Blogger jgohil, at 04:34

  • guys, can some one help.. how do i use the scorecard display thingy?

By Blogger losing now, at 04:34

  • Well I think this combo looks good. RD is backing his batsmen to score. they are there to make runs and they got to stand up to the occasion. But for starters i hope the bowlers do well and keep SL to a reasonable total.
Thats the key coz chasing huge total against spinners wont be that easy here.

    By Blogger Sid, at 04:34

  • Prem..have you sent a letter to McClements about that umpiring bit ?

    By Blogger worma, at 04:34

  • 5 bowlers would have been ok had the 5th bowler been J.P.Yadav. I am afraid we have a very weak batting line up today and more so because Sehwag and Ganguly are not exactly in good form.

    By Blogger Jai, at 04:35

  • Hope Zaheer proves this wrong, but he is not my pick for opening bowler; would much rather have him bowl first change

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 04:35

  • worma: Did. Hopefully, should hear in a day or two tops

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 04:36

  • Zaheer and the wides always go hand in hand. Seriously, this guy needs to stop doing this everytime he starts his spell

    By Blogger AA, at 04:36

  • Wow, 3 extras in a row.
Zaheer just giving momentum ot SL innings.

    By Blogger AA, at 04:37

  • looks like Zaheer woke up on the wrong side today wd,nb,wd..to start. WC'03 final first over memories

By Blogger losing now, at 04:37

  • As i have said i million times before Balaji instead of Zaheer always

    By Blogger Jiet, at 04:37

  • nehra should've shared...khan always prone to nerves in big matches...having fielded this combo, india need to juggle their batting line-up a bit...

By Blogger mohd iqbal, at 04:37

  • Ok. Do keep us posted on the latest. I think this is going to be big news if ump decisions are open to 'review' !!

    By Blogger worma, at 04:37

  • Ah no... every sign of a bowler not feeling good about his form, and trying too hard in a key game.

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 04:37

  • make that 4 in a row

    By Blogger AA, at 04:37

  • another one

By Blogger losing now, at 04:37

  • ol' zaheer has perfect the rhythm of losing his rhythm in the very first over

    By Blogger riemann1, at 04:37

  • Zaheer and Rameez living in their own world....Zaheer bowling 4 wide/noballs and Rameez calling Zaheer as Nehra....

By Blogger Ruchir Joshi, at 04:38

  • There you go.....

Somethings don't change...and Zaheer Khan bowling in finals....

what does he eat on a finals morning, I wonder......

Let's pray that teh total doesn't cross 300!!!

Sorry guys....I don't mean to pour water on your hopes...but it just doesn't look good...

    By Blogger Ram, at 04:38

  • Mmmm... much better, focus more on just putting the ball there or thereabouts...

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 04:38

  • That is Abeynayake the Sri Lankan commentator

    By Blogger Jiet, at 04:39

  • watching zaheer run in is like watching a javelin thrower run in with that awkward semi-side-on, measured and horribly tentative runup

    By Blogger riemann1, at 04:40

  • And finally close to an approximation of his top pace, on taht first ball to Sanat... 81.7. SJ should be a bit nervy with all that talk about his 10,000... if IP can turn the screws tight with a controlled over angled tight on off, fun could happen

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 04:41

  • Brilliant over from Zaheer. The man for big games!

    By Blogger Jiet, at 04:41

  • agreee..zaheer not looking his old self.

By Blogger losing now, at 04:41

  • why have mid-off / on if you've going to concede a single anyway ? This is poor cricket.

    By Blogger Anurag, at 04:41

  • Prem, 81.7 mph thats Zaheer's top pace? The guy was bowling 84-87 mph consistently in the world cup. Wonder what has gone wrong with him ever since then

    By Blogger AA, at 04:42

  • If we don't have midoff it will be three or four...we have field restrictions on

    By Blogger Jiet, at 04:42

  • who was the fielder.. the agile ganguly;-)

By Blogger losing now, at 04:43

  • anurag: the lankans know our boys... if it is stroked to kumble, saurav, nehra, they will run.

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 04:43

  • GC could remind Khan (& others) abt de Bono, the Six hats, and other such things...

By Blogger mohd iqbal, at 04:44

  • aa: Um, I did say approximation... he's damped down to about 83-84 since. What's going wrong? Not heard from the man himself, but my take is, he's been dicking around with his run up and leap way too much. First almost cut it out... then brought it back... now there is that stutter, that clear pause, if you notice, as he finishes his run up and gathers himself for the jump, that imho takes a bit of momentum off...

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 04:45

  • iqbal .. LOL

By Blogger losing now, at 04:45

  • not looking good at the moment for our bowlers....giving enough room to Atapattu for his strokes...wonder what Jayasurya will do when he gets width....

By Blogger Ruchir Joshi, at 04:45

  • iqbal: *grin* Trouble is, GC doesnt know our boys... they are apt to get confused trying to figure which hat goes with their sunblock, on the day...

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 04:46

  • Prem...with so many experts working in the bowling camp...couldnt they spot this obvious problem....which u can see even on tv !...infact I've noticed this stutter for a long time now..

    By Blogger worma, at 04:46

  • cheer leaders.. yum!

By Blogger losing now, at 04:46

  • Zaheer has not looked his own self for a long time now...

By Blogger Shakeel Abedi, at 04:47

  • 82.9 and on target. much better. UM... Dhoni never tended goal for Arsenal, did he?

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 04:48

  • Well that means we as well as the lankans know that kumble / nehra / saurav are slow movers. Wouldn't then it be a good idea to have them move up by a coule of feet to sow that seed of doubt in the batsman's mind, given that atapattu has been running himself out a lot lately ?

    By Blogger Anurag, at 04:48

  • pathetic .. Zaheer is awful today. no rythm

By Blogger losing now, at 04:48

  • Good morning guys...Prem, I came in after the team was announced..I see from here that the team is 5-1-5...who is the 5th batsman ? VS, SG, YS, MK and ? Also, is Nehra the 5th bowler ? I think I heard in the first over that India are playing only 2 pace bowlers...

    By Blogger Giri, at 04:49

  • Agree Prem...

By Blogger mohd iqbal, at 04:49

  • Y not replace Zaheer NOW...before he hands over the match....doesnt RD remember WC final ?

    By Blogger worma, at 04:49

  • Zaheer needs to be taken off from the attack. Bring Nehra. RD can't allow SL to get away to a good start.

    By Blogger AA, at 04:49

  • worma: Can, prolly did. spotting the problem is one thing, getting the problem ironed out is quite another.

Thing is, you dont want to tinker with your bowling technique, unless you desperately need to. ONce you do, damnably hard to get it back

Classic case, Maninder. They kept calling him the next Bedi, so the guy... prize idjit, him... deliberately altered his bowling style... bing, there went his bowling, and by the time he realized and tried to go back to his old style, he was neither here nor there

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 04:50

  • Dravid will have to replace Khan with Nehra pretty soon if he goes on with wides like this...

By Blogger Ruchir Joshi, at 04:50

  • Prem:

What do you make of this line of attack...on the leg and middle...

Are JS and MA known to be weak on the on-side?

    I don't get it..

    By Blogger Ram, at 04:51

  • Jiet ponders how much of his life savings he should bet on Sri Lanka

    By Blogger Jiet, at 04:51

  • ohh..I hope Zaheer is able to come back....wud be too bad...fast bowlers..even more than batsmen...take a long time to mature...I dont think we can develope a replacement by WC07

    By Blogger worma, at 04:52

  • playing like jerks...for a few years now...wonder when we get to see the munafs, gagandeeps, rp sings bowling in some finals without airs/nerves and baggages...such a pity....

By Blogger mohd iqbal, at 04:52

  • bowling on lgegs.. whats wrong guys!

By Blogger losing now, at 04:52

  • Today is the first real test for RD's captaincy.

Will be very interested to see how he sets his fields and rotates his bowlers today.

    By Blogger AA, at 04:52

  • anurag: logically, would be. Trouble is that's a fine line. Bring the fielder at mid off to, say, in line with the bowler's crease, and you immediately present batsmen with this thought, that if he comes forward and pushes with a straight bat, he can guide it just fractionally to the left of the fielder, who is none too agile to start with, that will beat him and go through for runs. You just can't hide a bad fielder in front of the stumps, presents batsmen with all kinds of openings... trouble being, we have thre e of them at the least, so at least one ends up in front, more likely two

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 04:53

  • kaif the man!

By Blogger losing now, at 04:53

  • these guys dont inspire any confidence at the moment..thay dont look pumped up at all...even Irfan is just going thru the motions here..

    By Blogger Giri, at 04:53

  • Lets feed jaya on his pads and bring him into form...our bowlers need the discipline to bowl 6 balls in the same area just outside off...

    By Blogger Raghu, at 04:53

  • You can add 4 runs to Kaif right there. Great stop.

    By Blogger AA, at 04:53

  • Zaheer is known to mentally break-down in finals of tournament. It has happened so many times. It is better to bring him as first change.

    By Blogger siddhu, at 04:53

  • Besides, imagine the fun if you were to put SG at third man, say. Horrors, the outrage in the media, the talk of problems between SG and RD, RD deliberately shoving SG into an obscure corner, shiva shiva

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 04:53

  • Jiet...I would hold on still...SJ hasn't got going yet. Once/If he does...then you can check out that bundle from the bank ;-)

Prem...I noticed right after first match that Dhoni is not keeping well....(some comment in my blog also)....if India needs a batsman keeper then we still can do with RD....wonder if Dhoni is made aware of this

    By Blogger worma, at 04:54

  • India must try to bring on Kumble as a surprise weapon now.

    By Blogger madhugr, at 04:54

  • wow..how did he miss that.

By Blogger losing now, at 04:54

  • Morning everyone. Jayasuriya almost bowled there!

    By Blogger mustt_mustt, at 04:54

  • rank bad bowling...no spirit or enthu..

    By Blogger Raghu, at 04:55

  • 10K for SJ

By Blogger losing now, at 04:55

  • worma: *grin* Is a thought that popped up last night while reading in bed...would RD, given the importance of the game, go right, need five batsmen plus keeper, i'll keep and bring in one more regular batsman, that is actually best of both worlds. Didnt happen, though...

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 04:56

  • 28/0 in 5 overs. When India comes to bat, we will 10/2 in 5 overs.

    By Blogger AA, at 04:56

  • Good captaincy! Nehra on.

    By Blogger Jiet, at 04:56

  • good ball, bad ball, good ball, bad ball. That's how we bowl. finally, nehra in

By Blogger losing now, at 04:56

  • Good, for a moment I thought RD would worry about ZK's mental state if he was changed, and keep him on. this was the right move, could even have been made an over ago.

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 04:56

  • Why does SJ like indian bowling so much? Any reason why some players like a particular country's bowling attack.

    By Blogger siddhu, at 04:57

  • abhay: *LOL* and they say we lack variety in our bowling?

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 04:57

  • Good change by RD. Nehra needs to bowl well now

    By Blogger AA, at 04:57

  • Guess RD couldn't concern himself with the media outrage too much. He needs to take decisions in the interest of the team not to please the media or somebody else for that matter. Though I really don't know where a hide a player like SG / Nehra / kumble really, maybe short midwicket.. but then thats just one of them taken care of.!

    By Blogger Anurag, at 04:57

  • looks like a 250+ winning score wicket. thoughts prem?

By Blogger losing now, at 04:58

  • our openers would never take singles..

    By Blogger Raghu, at 04:59

  • Is this the same pitch on which other matches were played ? Anyone ?

    By Blogger worma, at 04:59

  • cheeky single again.. sleeping mid off!

By Blogger losing now, at 04:59

  • bowled..

    By Blogger Raghu, at 04:59

  • siddhu: one, the confidence of having gotten runs off them before. more importantly, the bowler at the top of his mark, looking up, going oh shoot, it's that bloke again, and promptly forgetting the basics and getting scared.

the best line to SJ early on is now no secret (actually, would credit Sri with being the first to have really made it work, in the home series following that 900+ series in Lanka): Swing wide, spear it in very tight and full on off. cramps him, cuts out all his favorite shots, and frustrates him into playing all over it. But not once have they bowled that ball yet, IP came close once is all

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 04:59

  • Brilliant form Nehra!

    By Blogger Jiet, at 05:00

  • Reward for good captaincy right there for RD and Team India.

    By Blogger AA, at 05:00

  • bowled him

By Blogger losing now, at 05:00

  • marvan did not know where his offstump was...

    By Blogger Raghu, at 05:00

  • worma: nope, new one. Seems fair. Not too pacy, but even bounce thus far.

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 05:00

  • nehra stikes.. Zaheer needs to rest (not at mid off)

By Blogger losing now, at 05:01

  • Nice ball there from Nehra! HE's been the best is the series for India so far.

    By Blogger mustt_mustt, at 05:01

  • Gangs was seen encouraging Nehra. :)

    By Blogger Jai, at 05:01

  • mustt nehra sucked againt wi in the last match...

    By Blogger Raghu, at 05:01

  • mustt: i would say pathan also has been close to best...

    By Blogger worma, at 05:02

  • A pinch hitter. Interesting move by SL

    By Blogger AA, at 05:03

  • So, bowling change working for india...good for Dravid...now comes the pintch hitter....good move by Moody..

By Blogger Ruchir Joshi, at 05:03

  • time for i-pat to strike! come on guys hunt in pairs ;-)

By Blogger losing now, at 05:03

  • ah geez, right line, nice juicy half volley length. :-(

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 05:03

  • I though Nehra was unfortunate because he was bolwing to Dwayne Smith who played some incredible shots in the middle of the innings. Not bad bowling really.

    By Blogger Jiet, at 05:03

  • so SL does feel this is a run-fest kind of pitch

    By Blogger worma, at 05:03

  • I doubt is Zaheer is a big innings player, always seen him having 'final' jitters and starts to spray the ball all around.

By Blogger Geoffrey George, at 05:04

  • good ball..bad ball. So what's new

By Blogger losing now, at 05:04

  • Pathan gifting runs to Jaya....he seems to be going Zaheer way too....

By Blogger Ruchir Joshi, at 05:04

  • yes jiet...and remember he again bowled a tight last over, giving no hit-me balls...only 4 runs. I think he is developing as a tight last over specialist for India...about time too !

    By Blogger worma, at 05:05

  • worma: Right, or at the least, a pitch where they can go a touch hard at the top, when the ball is new. notice that last ball, to the pinch hitter? was on the short side and he was forward into the drive -- and connected at knee height.

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 05:05

  • pinch hit 4.. let's feed the juicy half-volleys

By Blogger losing now, at 05:05

  • there u go, 6.00 runs per over :(

By Blogger Geoffrey George, at 05:06

  • 7 extras in 42!

By Blogger losing now, at 05:06

  • Four 4-balls in four overs hurting Pathan... 16 of the 25 runs coming in boundaries here

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 05:06

  • Prem: **notice that last ball, to the pinch hitter..** - not watching the match today, so relying on you guys for live comments :-)

    By Blogger worma, at 05:08

  • Did you guys hear Heals interviewing KS before the game? No inane questions... closing query on the hair cut and KS grins and goes, hopefully my head won't fall over now... neat

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 05:08

  • what's ian C doing here.. and not in England. He is writing re: ashes though

By Blogger losing now, at 05:08

  • worma: Uh oh. Wokay. :-) Ball didn't get up the way it should have landing about 9 yards line.

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 05:09

  • swing and a hit!

By Blogger losing now, at 05:09

  • oh my god! what a decision!

    By Blogger Jiet, at 05:09

  • Oooof, Ashoka thought for a moment, if I give that, how will I face my mates... then figured the heck with it

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 05:09

  • gone

By Blogger losing now, at 05:09

  • Nehra has raised his game for this final. Pathan and Khan need to come to the party as well.

    By Blogger AA, at 05:10

  • pitche o/s leg. bad decision silva strikes.

By Blogger losing now, at 05:10

  • Nehar does it again but a rank bad shot by Loku. Sanity will return to the proceesings. Go and make your second cuppa.

    By Blogger mustt_mustt, at 05:11

  • how can he still be umpring prem. He sucks. This guy and Bucknor should be thrown out

By Blogger losing now, at 05:11

  • Tell you what, would hate to see India use a pinch hitter... by definition, those guys want the ball really coming on, and climbing a touch. This deck isn't it -- again short, but look where it hits the pad, just around knee roll height, where the batsman was swinging for a ball climbing higher than that, looking to go under and up

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 05:11

  • wow...nehra doing pathan's job of getting initial break-throughs...good bowling

By Blogger Ruchir Joshi, at 05:11

  • If India can nibble out SJ's wicket somehow, RD will be able to attack and will choke the rest of the SL batsmen with dot balls

    By Blogger AA, at 05:13

  • Prem, what do u reckon? A 300+ score by SL ?

By Blogger Geoffrey George, at 05:13

  • geoffrey: Be surprised if they get to 300... or even 280 for that matter, would take the heck of an innings by at least two batsmen. 250-260 I think would be more like it... a lot of these shots will -- okay, should -- stop working once the ball softens...

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 05:14

  • I think SL will be looking at aorund 275. This is a belter really.

    By Blogger Jiet, at 05:15

  • wonder why Irfan is bowling so much on leg today ? is he trying for swing ? if so, he should have figured out by now that he is not getting that much..

    By Blogger Giri, at 05:15

  • Prem: What position is Sehwag fielding on.. very strange!

By Blogger losing now, at 05:15

  • ..ab=nd he drops one

By Blogger losing now, at 05:16

  • dhoni is a really bad keeper..how can u drop that?

    By Blogger Raghu, at 05:16

  • Oh geez!!!!! Catch dropped, VS hurt, what, double jeopardy? Would have been a wonderful take, goes Rameez -- come oh, chap, straight into the glove... at pace yes, but what, keepers need lobs?

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 05:16

  • dhoni drops the Indian Oil cup? :)

By Blogger Mock Turtle, at 05:16

  • Dhoni drops SJ. Thats not a good thing to do.

    By Blogger AA, at 05:16

  • Veeru shld have swallowed that ball.

    By Blogger mustt_mustt, at 05:17

  • jaya dropped....why do we have to mess every good thing up!!!

By Blogger Ruchir Joshi, at 05:17

  • abhay: I know. i notice he is more orthodox for te other batsmen. adjustment for a hard slash from SJ, I presume, though I am not quite clear how it actually works, or why you would need that adjustment.

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 05:17

  • we have 2 people behind the stumps who have been dropping catches all through the series...dhoni and sehwag..

    By Blogger Raghu, at 05:18

  • Cool... the loser gets a cup too! They could have made a third one, prolly get a concessional rate going too, and given it to the third team.

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 05:18

  • The trouble with 260 - 280, is we just have 6 batsmen today, VS and SG havnt really come to the party :) Plus the fact abt battling SL slow bowlers in the evening dew.

By Blogger Geoffrey George, at 05:18

  • Prem,
You figure that they will only get to 260? Windies made it to 250 batting second a couple of days ago. If anything this track looks just as good.

    By Blogger Jiet, at 05:19

  • Prem...again back to Dhoni...his keeping not improving..infact going down ?...that guy needs to be told that hes a keeper first

    By Blogger worma, at 05:19

  • jiet: for the reasons mentioned :-) Nehra -- with some help from YS and MK -- doing a more than decent job just now, incidentally. Owes those two eight runs off two balls

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 05:20

  • Anything above 200 from SL and India will not be able to win

    By Blogger AA, at 05:20

  • Prem, good morning.. I saw your comment on Sri figuring out the line to bowl to SJ.. but, after that 1997 series, SJ had some match-winning knocks against us (189 in 2000; two hundreds in 2001) and in last year's only Indian win on srilanka,he almost won the match with a 100.. I think our bowlers get psyched.. They still give him with plenty of 4-balls

    By Blogger Raju, at 05:20

  • in the replay the guy was not even looking at the ball that he going to catch one handed...who taught him to catch?

    By Blogger Raghu, at 05:20

  • worma: actually, that's too true. trouble with some keepers in the side for their batting is they spend more time hitting in the nets, than practising keeping. :-( And if IP has crocked his shoulder on that dive, that is all India needed

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 05:21

  • think the other cup is the man of the series cup - not the loser cup

By Blogger Mock Turtle, at 05:22

  • Oh boy, looks like Pathan injured his shoulder

By Blogger Geoffrey George, at 05:22

  • Not Pathan. India cannot lose him for this match.

    By Blogger AA, at 05:23

  • Pathan and Yuvraj's shirts look soaking wet...it must be really hot out there...

By Blogger Ruchir Joshi, at 05:23

  • Yep...I seriously hope GC talks some sense into that guy....his batting, whatever he has, is ok for us for the moment as long as he can dedicatedly work on his keeping...

    By Blogger worma, at 05:24

  • gp: Yeah, that was the point I was trying to make, they look up, they see him, they call for mommy. :-(

I made that point about Sri coz I was in Bangalore after India came back from SL, and met Sri, we got to talking and SJ came up. Was asking Sri what he thought and he took pencil and paper, sketched in a pitch, and began dotted lines for the ball and arrows for the shots SJ plays to those lines... kept doing it, then went, check this out, just about the one line he does *not* have a shot for is if you can go this wide, and get this angle in... catch being, as he admitted, it takes one heck of a bowler to do that consistently even five balls out of six, on that line, the diff of a couple of inches means you can stroke it straight or to the on side.

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 05:24

  • looks like Sangakkara keeps talking to himself, psyching himself, I guess :)

By Blogger Geoffrey George, at 05:24

  • Much better from Zaheer...bolwed a slower one there

    By Blogger Jiet, at 05:24

  • From 57/2 in 10.3 overs, what will it take India to restrict SL to less than 200? Is it possible?

    By Blogger madhugr, at 05:25

  • Update on Pathan - he has a viral infection.

    By Blogger mustt_mustt, at 05:25

  • mock: ah. *g* Was wondering. Oh btw, Indian Oil apparently told these guys that the man of the series should be called the Outperformer of the Series... something about corporate language. :-)

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 05:25

  • nice one from Rameez..."we will get an update on his injury the moment we hear about it"....so what is new in that line?

By Blogger Ruchir Joshi, at 05:26

  • mustt: don't get it.

    By Blogger Jiet, at 05:26

  • geoffrey: or practising his sledging. *L* got a nifty line in chatter that lad. his monolog against SA was to die for

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 05:26

  • srilanka despite losing 2 early wickets going for runs. Question can India with just five batsman afford to do the same, if required ? Guess no, thats the trouble playing just 5 batsman.

    By Blogger Anurag, at 05:26

  • Maiden by Zaheer. Good comeback. Hope he keeps the pressure up now.

    By Blogger AA, at 05:27

  • Prem..what monologue ?

    By Blogger worma, at 05:27

  • outperformer sounds like someone who gets "out" a lot :)

By Blogger Mock Turtle, at 05:27

  • yup, I heard his banter with Pollock when they let us hear thru the stump microphone ... Boy, Pollock had no reply .... And he is a pretty smart sledger ... No sister/mother/wife stuff like the Aussies :)

By Blogger Geoffrey George, at 05:28

  • anurag: but if you flip that... we had six batsmen plus dhoni all along, didnt manage to go for the bowling after losing quick wickets anyways. knowing they are a batsman less just might help the five who are doing duty focus a bit more...

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 05:28

  • SG and VS need to take a cue from how SL is playing the first 15 here. Focus on rotating the strike and hit the odd 4 when the bad ball comes along.

    By Blogger AA, at 05:28

  • jiet- that's the usual line from the Indian media manager:) Yuvi was apparently suffering from a viral infection when he was dropped but the man was running aroound like a rabbit as a substitute.

    By Blogger mustt_mustt, at 05:29

  • mustt: thanks - need to remember that.

    By Blogger Jiet, at 05:30

  • worma: Oh god you missed that? When SL was in SA... they must have copped a fair bit, coz KS suddenly cut loose. Was standing up, and wouldn't stop talking. To Kallis, and went up several gears when Shaun Pollock came out to bat... hey, polly, what's the matter, mate, all that talk about confidence, know what, your off stump is an inch the other way, mate, didnt you take your guard yet huh?, polly, your feet, mate, need to be moving a bit more buddy, you aren't getting in line, chap... and so on and on and on, non stop... really psyched pollock to heck and back

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 05:30

  • snippet from Sangakkara vs Pollock ..

Back in November, with Pollock at the crease and South Africa on the verge of sealing the Test series 2-0 at Centurion, Sangakkara decided to get stuck in. "We don't complain when we lose away, man," he croaked. "We don't cry like in Morocco [where Sri Lanka had beaten South Africa in the final of a one-day competition in August] and say 'this not our conditions, this is not our conditions' and go to the press conference and say the same. F***ing joke. If you win, be gracious, man. Otherwise it's s**t. Graceful, man, graceful, Shaun. Learn it."

By Blogger Geoffrey George, at 05:31

  • guys, good morrning, just got up.
SL 57/2 - looks decent start by both the teams.
where is the live feed? willow? didn't someone say sgstream last time? Please provide details about how to watch live?

By Blogger Anand K, at 05:31

  • I think dropping Yuvi was a masterstroke if he was actually dropped due to form rather than injury. Every now and then, Yuvi needs to be given a pinch or two to make him perform to the potential that he has in such abundance.

    By Blogger AA, at 05:31

  • focussing more almost always means going into a shell for indian batsman. hope they've some plan up their sleeves for the game and are not playing 5-5-1 just for the heck of it sine nothing else seemed to work anyhow.

    By Blogger Anurag, at 05:31

  • mustt: Hush, dont put ideas in folks' heads! Dont want my employers thinking *my* viral fever was the same... watching cricket all night then claiming fever and staying back from work. *L*
