Rohit on the imponderables

In his column, Rohit looks at those aspects of great sporting performance that cannot be reduced to numbers on a scoreboard: courage, determination, courtesy and much else -- what strikes you when you read through it is, these are the very qualities that have gone AWOL from the Indian cricket team for a long time now.

  • Prem,

This is a follow-up to my earlier comment on achieving synergy -- maybe, the Vitamin C needed is not confidence but *courage*

  • Prem..not from Indian team....only Indian ODI team...this test team is still only a couple of steps displaced from the Aus, Pak form. And hopefully ODI effect would not damage that.

  • worma - not on the basis of their performance in Test last season. I think the signs are worrying.. Banglore and Nagpur were humiliating defeats. Mumbai win was a consolation win, no doubt, but not convincing. Madras Test was the only Test where we could be said to have held the upper hand for extended periods. Against a demoralised Pakistan, we could shut the Mohali test match and then the Bangalore Test was another disaster. It would be wrong to assume that our Test standard is close to what it was vs Aus and Pakistan in 03-04. Might be prudent to wait and see what they do in Zimbabwe - mind you, the result of that series is no foregone conclusion either!

  • tiger...bangalore was as humiliating as Mumbai was in previous Aus tour...still the team got back well enough (and here also there were signs of recovery)...and Nagpur was a whole diff ball-game..(Prem might add some info there, I think Nagpur test has been well debated)....and Mumbai was not a consolation victory...it was the team getting back into form (getting back to being controlled-aggresive against Aus..thats what got them to win earlier)...and the biggest thing about Mumbai was getting the mental thing right...believeing that we could win....defend even that total against the Aus...

Against Pak....the only mistake was the 'strategy' on last day of bangalore test to try for a shut-out draw...rather than a run-making draw...the sort which does not allow the opposition captain to set totally attacking fields (the one which S Waugh went for against us in Sydney)

We won comprehensively against Pak and SA in kolkatta....had a good game against Aus in chennai (and this is the Aus which has beaten everyone else comprehensively in their homes...except Eng now...who are anyway rated above us)..

..therefore...still maintain that we are only slightly astray from out top form in tests...a matter of getting a good win going (like the Mumbai match against Aus)...to get the team into the winning rhythm...and this is why I hope we get the full team to Zim.....even a good victory against that opposition would help the mental state of this test team, IMO

  • i wonder if these guys had a "loser" hat in all those management role-play stuff (and nonsense). and a few got so confused that they wore that hat on the finals :)
