The simplicity of true genius

I don't know about you guys, but my eyes are opened; enlightenment has dawned -- okay, it is close to 10 am, a bit late for 'dawn', but still, it has dawned: the BCCI review committee met in extended session in Mumbai last night, while I was blissfully sleeping, and came to the conclusion that I need to get a life.
For near on two weeks now, here we all were, scanning the media for the latest bit of information/gossip/leak, examining the developments from every conceivable angle, contemplating solutions -- and it turns out the answer was simple, really: The coach, Greg Chappell, and the captain, Saurav Ganguly, needed to be told that they had to work together for the good of Indian cricket.
Call it a slight slip up in communications -- what actually happened (and this is official) was, when the BCCI committee earlier met to appoint the coach, they forgot to tell him that it was important to work with the captain for the 'best interests of Indian cricket'. And -- you know how, per Murphy's Law, such things can happen -- when the selectors picked the captain ahead of the Zimbabwe tour, they forgot to tell him that he had to work with the coach.
Once this error had been diagnosed, the rest was simple -- the message has now been conveyed to the two gents, Indian cricket has turned the corner, and now we are all set, no worries.
Oh, and just to make sure the captain and coach work together, they have been told not to email/talk to anyone else; the players (who really have no business pre-empting the wise men and trying to determine what the problem was) have been told not to talk, period.
There now, problem solved. Corner turned. Best interests of Indian cricket duly accounted for. Everyone's happy -- so why aren't you, dammit?

PS: Will, in about an hour or so, do the paper rounds and see what everyone is saying about the crisis that wasn't.

  • Just thought I'd let you know about a site where you can make over $800 a month in extra income. Go to this site   MAKE MONEY NOW  and put in your zip code..... up will pop several places where you can get paid to secret shop, take surveys, etc.  It's free.  I found several and I live in a small town!

  • Prem, try to get info about what really happened.. I have a feeling that this is just a temporary truce to bail out SG - just to give him an opportunity to quit gracefully after the SL and SA ODIs. What about the review of player performances? Will the reviews continue?

    By Blogger Thirdman, at 09:43

  • I am not buying anything endorsed by an Indian cricketer. I refuse to follow Indian cricket till BCCI reforms its functioning.

    L8r dudes & dudettes!

  • Words are the root of all evil. The mandate obviously is

We should have players who are "deaf", A coach who is "blind" and a captain who is "dumb" and then as they say - let the game begin!

    By Blogger raj, at 09:44

  • The ostrich buried its head in the sand. Everyone tooks turn at the back end - Kenya, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, UAE all come - it is fair game.

    By Blogger Gardhabh, at 09:45

  • what i want to know is what happened to the incident regarding VVS? was it a communication problem too? was VVS consulted on this

    By Blogger JD, at 09:45

  • raj. good one.

By Blogger Sandeep Nalgundwar, at 09:46

  • Well the great tamasha ends for now!!! But is it possible that Ganguly can get away with the inevitable!!! Can't bat, can't field problem! how is that going to be rectified by Ganguly remains to be seen??!!! Can Ganguly command his place in the team as a player the next couple of series might decide this; Right now since he is the captain so he commands his place!!!

Is it going to be Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall and then after the great tamasha had a great fall..........

We see Ganguly learn to tackle the short ball and field with enthusiasm and cream bowlers just like old through off-side and captain just like an aeonds ago!!!

I really think and asking for too much ;)

    By Blogger rushe111, at 09:47

  • Prem, we fans are fools. BCCI once agained reminded us of the fact.

Many people are turned off this cricket business in India. Probably, that is best way to get away from this sport, where there is nothing rational.

    By Blogger Rajg, at 09:47

  • In the plausible event that there has been no face saving solution offered to SG to step down after SL (i.e., he continues as captain after that series), I think I'm better off supporting England. And oh, I'll be hoping SL thrash India 5-0 this time... it will serve these gents right.

Another point to note - only the injury issue was written off as a miscommunication - implying that the rest of the email was probably correct. If they still have the gall to keep SG captain after SL tour, then there's really no point following this team. We happily get new passports if we live abroad, why not support a different team?

    By Blogger aniruddh, at 09:48

  • wow - GC gets away with slander/libel/lies and story-telling. and at the end of it all, he will write a book as well and make more money.

    unbelievable ;-)

By Blogger Mock Turtle, at 09:49

  • Hi Prem!
You know what everyone was expecting for something unexpected to happen, while deep inside everyone knew that what would happen finally is compromise! Or the same thing that happened just before the second test. Where GC said that all was done to motivate the Captain. Here too after the meeting Mr. President has said that all was miscommunication!! Hello when one talk face to face how can there be miscommunication! And Further, what about Ganguly saying that "What can be said about the Character of a person who after making a statment sends such cricisiing mail" Was that also a miscommunication??
Comeon we are no fool there has to have some thing under the carpet.
What about Harbhajan singh saying that GC was creating a Rift between the "great bowler" and Dravid? From where did that come??
Over all "review committe" has not done any wonders here!! They have just facilitate tow Gents to Shake hands warmthly!! What the hell..tell us one thing how can these two guys would gel together in future? Do u thing GC would go the the wright's way from the very next assignment.
Somehow I feel, they have left a big question mark over the team member for few of the next series!!
There will surely be camps in the team now.....

There is a big Question mark!!
    Not satisfied!

    Prem any inside info??

    By Blogger Medium_Fast_LegSpin, at 09:50

  • Prem - This is a tactic to buy time. The Zim series didn't convince anyone that SG deserved a place in the team so we'll go around again. The law of averages means he'll score a few good knocks given enough chances. The his supporters (including so many on this blog) can point to them and proclaim that he is back in form and can't be dropped! If it doesn't work in the SL ODI series, we'll try again in the RSA ODI series, then the SL test series and on .. and on .. it's like the movie Groundhog Day .. the day will be repeated over and over again.

  • I seriously think that mock turtle's national flag sports the crescent moon.

    By Blogger Gardhabh, at 09:53

  • Probably the most disappointing outcome that could have been - the core issue has not been dealt with, no actions have been taken, and everything has been swept under the rug. So does this mean that Chappell's contentions and allegations are all false and unfounded? The committee seems to not even acknowledge that there is a problem? It certainly does look like Ganguly is being given more time to shape up - while making it appear as though it was a total miscommunication between coach and captain - I should have known this sort of an outcome was on the cards.

    By Blogger xychu, at 09:54

  • am waiting for the minutes of the meeting t obe leaked, shoud be an interesting read

    By Blogger JD, at 09:55

  • I guess the writing is on the wall. This team is heading its way south and would probably remain there for more time than we would want it to be.

I would rather support a fractured Pakistan team than support the bunch of jokers that we have in the BCCI. This is the ultimate pits. I don't think Indian cricket would remain the same to me. I cannot bear to see Ganguly and Chappell in the same team. As Anirudh said - I would wish that the team loses (and loses badly) to SA and SL and later on to Pakistan. We dont deserve a team that plays well. And Ialso wish SRT takes this opportunity to retire and watch the drama from the sidelines. It is too much of a torture for the man to play in such a pathetic team.

Rahul Dravid too should quit cricket in protest.

But oh! If all my wishes could happen, why would the Indian team be this bad?

BTW for all those who expect the team to do bad and Saurav to fail in the next series or two - dont worry the games have already been fixed. India would come out in flying colors and Saurav would score a couple of blazing hundreds too.

    By Blogger vshan, at 09:56

  • two cheers for the wise meen. how lucky are we to have such sensible men. I heard the committe said that as ganguly just lost his maternal grandfather he could look up to chappell as one...god bless this wise men.
Hurray for indian cricket we will be thrashing everyone ...now we are on rise come on you xions face us...

    By Blogger tombaan, at 09:56

  • Wonder if any of you guys read the article by this Sanjay Jha fellow, i wonder how people like him are allowed to cover cricket!!!!

    By Blogger sherine, at 09:58

  • Unfortunately we still have some good players - SRT, RD, VS, AK, who you would want to support... hopefully SRT remains injured for another year so we don't have to go through the pauin of seeing him score runs for this team

    By Blogger aniruddh, at 10:00

  • Conspiracy Theory : This is a drama staged by ESPN-STAR channel (alongwith Dalmiya) in order to ensure that the rival parties who were supposed to bid against them for the Indian TV rights, stay away after seeing the mess Indian cricket is in currently.

    a) If you remember, 2 of the persons on the committee are part of ESPN-STAR commentators. They will lose their jobs if there are going to be no broadcast on their channels.

    b) Sourav Ganguly's comments came on ESPN-STAR first with Harsha asking him about the rumors in the press (There were no mention of Greg asking Sourav to step down in any of the other press sites/channels!!!).

By Blogger deep cover, at 10:04

  • I know most of us are hurt and disappointed .....

But lets try to look into the whole scenario little deeper and try to find a silver lining somewhere

BCCI would never have said "Gangu Teli" fakes injuries : This is because it would have large scale repurcussions; Ganguly's whole career wud have been blotted (ala Azhar); BCCIs and Dalmiya's own image wud take a severe beating......So BCCI is allowing for Gangu Teli's graceful exit..Chappell would have prolly agreed to it, provided he gets an assurance that Gangu Teli is dropped after a series......

I assume the above because there is no other way Chappell would intend to remain as Coach after Mahindra publicly calls him a bluff

    By Blogger Kansultant, at 10:04

  • Sanjay Jha always write such stuff, eariler he has written something about GC not mentally fit to coach the team.

    By Blogger Medium_Fast_LegSpin, at 10:05

  • Great Indian Cricket Tamasha

Mahendra told that allegation of faking injuries was due to mis-communication. But what about the Captain's nervousness, fragile mind etc?
Some thoughts below on what decisions should have been taken, instead of the Drama played out by BCCI, story, screen play & Direction by Jagmohan Dalmiya:
    i) BCCI constitution is amended so that Dalmiya gets fundamental right of leaking confidential e-mails.
ii) We, the cricket lovers sent to National Institute of Mental health to get some electric shock treatment so that we can forget about cricket and concentrate on our work & business and be more productive.
iii) Ganguly sent to Sandy Gordon, psychiatrist, to overcome his nervousness and make himself mentally tough
iv) Ganguly sent to Glenn McGrath, a much better batsman than our captain to iron out his flaws against the short ball. Of course, McGrath plays the hook shot better than our captain.
    v) Ganguly sent to Nasser Hussain, to learn how to gracefully quit the captaincy and subsequently retire so that the youngsters get a chance and indian cricket moves forward.
vi) Thank the hon'ble supreme court for rightly deciding that this is not Indian Team but it is "Team BCCI". Indian Government and Indian public have no right on either the functioning of BCCI or the Cricket Team Performance. The public or the government should not have any objection, if the team is called "Team Dalmiya", since BCCI = Dalmiya.

    By Blogger devatha, at 10:09

  • Now that the hatchet has been buried (in public, that is!), one finds it incredulous to believe that this is in the best interests of Indian cricket!

A few hours before the news of the rapprochement became public, I posted this blog:

Would be happy to read your comments!

    Bwhahaha! Look who's talking!! Fker!

    By Blogger Kansultant, at 10:10

  • kansaltant - hats off to you boss! I agree that you are an eternal optimist. :-)

Sorry - but I just cannot see anything postive in this soap opera. If Chappell has any sense of self esteem he should resign and go. But then, the money involved is very high so he may choose to stay with his foot in his mouth. Ganguly will continue to rule and lose. We still have someway to go - we need to lose to Bangladesh and Zimbabwe consistently.

Shucks!! Why am I still following this game? I guess I should even stop reading anything about it.

    By Blogger vshan, at 10:10

  • dont u see its a win-win situation.. now SG and his gang, viz. HS, ZK will try and prove GC wrong by working hard and winning matches for India. And GC will push his favorites to try and prove that Kaif actually deserves a place more than SG.. Over all eveyrone will try and prove that they are the best and in the process the team will imrpove as a whole.. That was the secret strategy employed by the review committee for the best interest of Indian cricket.

    By Blogger Tiger, at 10:11

  • Prem, whatever you say, i think both parties have been guilty in this muddled affair...I don't think that Greg Chappel is a saint by any means. While the likes of Ganguly, VVS and HS should have kept their mouths shut, Chappel's handling of the team can't be ignored. Even when he was not selected, I had this view that he would not be a great coach. Look where Sri Lanka is heading after Moddy has joined them. And look at us? A coach's main job , especially in int'l cricket, is man management (forget all the skills he brings to the table). Look at John Buchanan and a few others.. If a coach can't handle 14 individuals then he is useless in spite of how great he may be (anybody remembers one gent Kapil Dev)..I think here is where GC's biggest weakness lies..beleieve me he can never be a great coach unless he learns this vital trait..A coach has to get best out of his players. Every individual needs a different treatment and thats what a coach has to learn and learn fast..While GC's methods may be correct, his way to implement them may not be..

I am sorry to say but right from the start of controversy, you have taken a pre-defined statnce (of course anti-SG because you may not like to see him in the team for cricketing or non-cricket reasons, which I agree to some extent). But I wonder, why at all, you have not raised the issue of man management of GC.. Great teams are first build on camaraderie, man-management and then come the other issues like fitness etc..If your pillars are not strong, you will never make a good team.

By Blogger Ravi Agrawal, at 10:12

  • Guys,

just watchout. During SL and SA series, there will be fixing done by JD and Co to ensure that SG is not bowled, caught, runout etc by SL members till he scores 70/80 runs. If Murali etc can be linked to Tarannum, JD and Co can do lot of backroom stuff to ensure that SG comes to form in paper/scores and team India may still loose - while SG has good avg at the end of the series. So SG stays while GC goes out - due to the vagaries of SG boys.

By Blogger Alex Pandian, at 10:12

  • boss tiger, you are optimistic

    By Blogger aniruddh, at 10:12

  • Breaking News

BCCI at last has decided to remove saurav ganguly from the Indian team.

They took the decision in a meeting they had yesterday in kolkata,as
reported. BCCI president Mahendra kumar said that the board has taken the decision
due to pressure from the India coach and selectors with reference to his
consistent bad form and behavioral aspects with the team mates and the coach. He
also added that Ganguly was the greatest captain India ever had but his
    removal was inevitable.

As a good will gesture, Ganguly was asked his last wish before
him stepping down from the team. Ganguly has requested the board that he
would like to step down as a winning captain and not on a loosing note. He
also mentioned that he would like to win a tournament before stepping down.

He said he always wanted to win a world cup but winning in a one day final
tournament is his still unfulfilled dream of life.

In order to help Ganguly fulfill his career dream BCCI has decided to schedule a tournament with
the consent of ICC president Ehsaan Mani.

The tournament details are as follows:

Date: 6th October to 18th October
    Venue: Harare
Teams: India, Zimbabwe A, Zimbabwe B, Canada

The match schedules will be published later.

    Rules as requested by Ganguly)

    1) Heath Streak, Masakadza and Blignaut are not supposed to represent
either of Zimbabwe A or Zimbabwe B teams

    2) To be on the safer side one of the umpires will be an Indian(
    preferable Jayaprakash)

    3) Sachin will be playing this tournament irrespective of his injuries
so as to help his captain lift a winning trophy

    4) Prize money will be a woofing 10 million dollars so that Ganguly
can financially sustain his life after cricket (it's rumored that he is
also loosing all his endorsements including sona chandi chawanprash)

    5) For the toss, Ganguly is insisting umpires to use the coin which was
used in the movie Sholay. (and obviously he will be calling the toss)

    6) Ganguly has asked for one more permission. It is.. as soon as India
hits winning runs he must be allowed to take his shirt off and swing in air..
he added depending on his mood he might as well remove the pants.

The name of the cup is ......
    "Aakhri Khwahish - 2005"

    By Blogger Kansultant, at 10:15

The issue here is not being pro or anti Ganguly. the issue being raised here is that there has been no decision from BCCI either way. If Chappell was not good enough, then hemay have to go. If Ganguly was wrong, then sack him. You cannot sweep a pumpkin under the carpet. That is precisely what the mandarins in the BCCI have attempted.

    By Blogger vshan, at 10:15

  • The only possibility of redemption is a quick election at BCCI, Pawar and co winning and then exeunt SG.

    By Blogger Gardhabh, at 10:15

  • Boy, I wish there were a Saturday Night Live type of show in India. There is so much material in all of this.

Skit 1: Ganguly running off the field at the sight of a fast bowler with a new ball.

Skit 2: The India team going through their fitness drills.

Skit 3: The review committee meeting.

Skit 4: The communication gap - SK Nair.

Skit 5: The communication gap - Captaion and Coach.

  • gopalblog...I am not saying who did right or wrong..My main point is that why do we have to raise only those issues with which we are comfortable. Now that an Australian player claims that GC was weak in his man management skills, why does not any body of come with your views on this...Is GC some kind of a perfectionist who will do everything right..

By Blogger Ravi Agrawal, at 10:17

  • Reminds you of that famous dialog - hum saale mandir ke ganthe hein - sub aake bajao - or something like that.

    By Blogger Gardhabh, at 10:17

  • It is actually stupid of us fans to even bother with this bunch of losers (i mean not only the players BCCI officials included). Indian cricket will never be run professionally. Period.

We may pull our hairs out in frustration but they will not change.

Why we even bother I will never understand, come next match we will be glued to all sources of information on the match, come next INDIVIDUAL PERFORMANCE, and we will go ga ga singing praises and raising them to the sky.

And till the next match comes around we will be busy splitting hairs on every silly move the cricket body, the coach or the team makes, while the actors themselves are least botherd about the fans.

    By Blogger Bedoon_Esam, at 10:19

  • Vshan, I agree with u on this...I think I may be slightly off blog here..But it reamisn my concern anyways (GC's man management and nobody making an issue out of it)..We are here to discuss BCCI's incompetence but I was not expecting a weak fragile BCCI to take any tough decisions anyways..The other point is that most of the people I know on this blog were expecting SG being removed including Prem so a sharp reaction from them is quite expected...Sometimes I wonder how we make issues out of things we are comfortable with..

By Blogger Ravi Agrawal, at 10:21

  • ravi agrawal - I remember all these issues regarding GC being discussed when he was hired. If you remember *some* players were supporting the appointment of Tom Moody and *some* in the blog including agreed with them but the JD/SG gang pushed their man GC. Now he wants to do this his way all the issue with him are brought out. It would be funny if it weren't so sad.

  • Ravi - I expected GC to quit - actually although not because I felt he did a bad job (it is too early to comment) but because the BCCI would back Ganguly. Here, the BCCI showed that it was actually spineless. Impotent bunch of jokers in the board are reducing the game to a farce.

Regarding GC - I checked out his material on Chappell way and frankly speaking I would agree with some team members - 'bahut bolta hai'. There is too much of theory there, lots of books references on thinking and motivation and stuff. I dont think this team is educated enough (not that I appreciate it) to appreciate all that hi-fi management stuff.

    By Blogger vshan, at 10:25

  • hahahahahaha. Thats a big F (as an ice cream ad goes) to all the billions. We all look like fools and the first person(s), second person(s) in the whole affair just dust their bottoms and walk into the sunset. hahahaha we deserve this for investing so much emotions and hopes in this issue and that too with BCCI at the bottom of the pile. hahahaha trust the BCCI to do this. So what now-the big mouth gag now extends to the players, coach and the entire gang. Now let us start tailing the maalis, the luggage boys, ball boys and such kinds to see if we get some info. On second thoughts who wants to know to know more about this shit pile of Indian cricket. If ever BCCI thinks of a logo (hahahaha will they ever walk that path)i would suggest a blindfold and a gag and a middle finger.

    By Blogger Ramji, at 10:25

  • ravi, I agree with you... I'm sure GC's man mangement skills were under the spotlight; but if the more serious allegations (e.g. VVS thing) are true, the SG must go. If they are not, then GC must go for lying. At the moment, there is no decision (or may there is, but they don;t want anyone to know just as yet)

    By Blogger aniruddh, at 10:27

  • Kansultant:

    Great list,

If i may add i just got of the phone with SG and he has requested addition of the following conditions to the Aakhri Khwaish Cup 2005.

    1) In case ZIM A & ZIM B cannot be formed, then Holland or UAE will be allowed to participate.

    3) ANYTHING bowled above waist high to Ganguly will be considered a NO BALL, tournament rules to be suitable amended to ensure that the runs of such NO Balls are added to SG score instead of Extras.

    4) Kaif will not be in the playing 11 he will only be allowed to substitute for Ganguly as fielder and all catches that he snaps will be added to Ganguly's career tally.

    By Blogger Bedoon_Esam, at 10:45

  • If that's the criteria going to be applied now onwards, what was it before? Connection with top board officials?

Indian Cricket is not going anywhere. It's too early to say but I'm surprised with Chappell agreeing to have Ganguly in the team when the whole nation shares is view that Ganguly should be thrashed out.

May be the arrangement is to allow Ganguly to have a graceful (??) exit after the next few series (in which he will fail again).

There is no doubt that Ganguly's days are numbered and he won't last year 2006. And he will be under tremendous pressure to perform in every single game not only with his batting but has to stand on the ground without faking any injuries (he'll now think twice before leaving the field even if there is a real but minor injury). This will also prove to be an example for idiots like Khan, Nehara and Agarkar who cannot bowl even 10 overs at a stretch without getting injured.

Chappell has already done his job, however credit goes to Dalmiya for leaking the email. We would not have had this outcome otherwise.

Dravid and Tendulkar must stand up and firmly support Chappell now onwards if they care even one bit for Cricket lovers.
