What, amity is bad?

Anand Vasu on Cricinfo is a bit miffed that no matter how rocky the road, the Board somehow manages to resolve matters amicably.
"Don't put words in my mouth. The matter has been resolved amicably," said Mahendra, when it was put to him that the board was once again sweeping a delicate matter under the carpet. Allow yourself a chuckle, for it was only days ago that an acrimonious annual general meeting of the board was "adjourned amicably", after a whole day of haggling, court cases, counter cases, and mudslinging. Then, it was unclear what made Sharad Pawar's camp change their minds and "adjourn amicably". Now, it is unfathomable what could have prompted Chappell and Ganguly to resolve their issues in a similar manner.

More, from an exasperated Vasu, in his review of the day:
There was no-one from the board to disseminate information, and to cap it all, Mahendra announced that, in future, the captain, coach, and players were all gagged from speaking to the media about the issue.
Ironically, the most explosive leak in recent times emerged from a board official, not the captain, the coach or any players. And Mahendra said the matter was being investigated. The gravity of a confidential email from coach to employers being leaked seemed to be lost on Mahendra, who dismissed the matter saying no committee was needed to investigate this matter, and that the board "has its ways" of conducting its own investigations.

And this:
Mahendra seemed to forget that he was addressing 100-odd journalists who had waited all day in mounting anticipation, amid a mad flurry of reporting every tiny morsel. He spoke like a clown would to a group of toddlers at a birthday party, expecting laughter at the right points, silence at others, and wonder and amazements at the revelations. When asked what was going to be done about the reported indiscipline in the team - a very, very serious matter - Mahendra retorted, "What should we do? Hang them?" If the board president believes indiscipline is a laughing matter, then you have to wonder what exactly goes on in his mind.

To add to Vasu's comments -- if the indiscipline within this team was bad enough to prompt John Wright to quit (no less than Sunny Gavaskar said so, remember?), did the board conduct any 'inquiry', take any action?
Oh but I forget -- the board has its own ways, no?

Prem: Would you help support a signature drive to send a message to the BCCI? Since the BCCI cares a hoot about the fans, but will grovel before sponsors if their money flow may be impacted, I am thinking a protest letter to the sponsors may jolt them to, hopefully, awaken the BCCI.

I am thinking of doing so on a personal basis and a couple of other guys wanted to sign the letter to register their displeasure too. (See comments in the earlier Chappel post.. the liar one.)

I could draft the letter. If you offer to post it on the blog so other readers may sign it, that would be great (well, not sure if the google blog has such a feature).

Either way, appreciate if you could let us know if the blog will host the signature drive. Thanks a ton!

I wonder why they dont tabulate all of Ganguly's incidents of misbehaviour when it matters. Only after a controversy they dig up all such things, typical mdeia.

Meanwhile Arjuna Ranatunga writes his support for Ganguly and mentions the incident which he has already written about some time back-about Ganguly asking him about captaincy and stuff

  • If Sourav has failed, Coach has failed and BCCI has failed then let me be the first one to say that MEDIA has failed as well.

If Vasu knew how Wright was being treated in later parts of his tenure, why didn't he report so ? What is the point in telling it now ?

SG: jaggu uncle, jaggu uncle .. they want to drop me from the team. can u please convince the PE teacher to include me in the team. BTW, the PE teacher wants me to exercise and run and get fit. It really hurts.

Jaggu uncle: Koi baat nahin beta. Eat this lollypop. i'll take care of the PE teacher. I'm the headmaster .. dont worry beta. take it easy..go play with your Dona doll.

We fans of Indian cricket are suckers ..and JD and his gang know it! It is like "we - the indian cricket fan" are the "abused spouse" in an abusive relationship. We keep hoping for the best and think of this as temporary. Do not be surprised if some deranged fan some day does something bad to this guy because there is a limit to the abuse an individual can take and different people have different thresholds for tolerating this kind of crap. Do not get me wrong,I'm not advocating it..but these guys are playing with fire.

  • Saum: Sorry, saw this on my way out the door. Of course. You guys let me know in email when you are ready to go, and I'll put the link up.

    Later, peoples.

  • I am just wondering what impression GC got out of this whole fiasco. He will I am sure start wondering how committed is BCCI to the mandate that was given to him - namely WC2007. His first effort towards that mandate has been brushed aside by the board itself as a matter of communication. He could be thinking, well if they themselves are not that keen, then why should I break my back in trying to make the best team for WC2007, let me sit back and enjoy the oodles of money BCCI is paying for the contract.
BCCI is anyway happy, their prince charming is still the captain.
The captain is happy, he has got away with murder.
The team's laggards are happy, the coach wont be able to make them do any physical training.
Non-performer HS is happy that he blurted out his support for SG publicly.
The manager AC likewise will get further assignments.
RIP Indian cricket - the autopsy showed that you were kidnapped, raped, sodomised and murdered, but there is no FIR.

  • I wonder if the Code of conduct has a clause like - if you witness any event which is detrimental to the team or to Indian cricket, you will bring it to the board's notice (not thru eamil). Probably RD, Ak and some others might then be coaxed to stop supporting SG's dadagiri and reveal his ineptness.

    By Blogger Gardhabh, at 13:41

  • saum, I think you asked for Prem's ID.
Prem's email ID is prem.panicker@gmail.com. I know he has a rediff ID too, dont remember that one.

    By Blogger Toney, at 13:42

  • Thanks Toney and Prem!

  • Ranatunga's articles are useless- baseless opinion with no analysis

    By Blogger suraj, at 14:00

  • There we go again!!! The issue has been gently brushed under the carpet and everybody's mouths have been gagged hoping it won't surface again. Remember something like this happened not so long ago (matchfixing) and it did not take long for it to blow up. We just pushed back Indian cricket to the doldrums...

Our friends on the blog are talking about an email campaign. I think this is not going to help since the BCCI does not give a damn about it. We need to give it to them where it hurts... financially.

    By Blogger Kannan, at 14:04

  • Ranatunga talks like an idiot in the article. How SG waited patiently for him during a massage and politely asked him if he had 10 minutes to spare.

The issue here is not whether SG is patient or polite. He is forcing himself on the team and it is apparent to everyone except to himself, his chamchas in the team and the BCCI.

    By Blogger Kannan, at 14:06

  • saum,
One issue about a signature drive through email is that BCCI do not believe in using technology of any kind. They only accept hand delivered messages at Nair's residence.

    By Blogger Toney, at 14:16

  • Reposting...

Can we order a national 'bandh' on attending cricket matches? We always have a bandh by the truckwallas etc etc. Can't the cricket fans unite for one cause and ask the BCCI to reveal who leaked the email? Prem, others, can't the media come together and ask the junta for a national 'bandh'? We have a month's time to sort this out...it would be gr8 if cricinfo, rediff, indianexpress etc etc. could come together and issue this 'bandh'. At least it looks like all the writers are united in their views/disgust on this matter.

    By Blogger rp, at 14:21

  • If no one attends the matches, these guys won't get any money...that way maybe we can force them to spit out the truth...

    By Blogger rp, at 14:24

  • in case of a bandh, BCCI would organize a match at Calcutta and all the SG fanatics would show up. Plus they could get truckloads of fans from neighboring states like politicians usually do.

    By Blogger Kannan, at 14:50

  • lol@toney... well, this one will go to the sponsors rather than BCCI. And, the sponsors have lots of ways to be reached - email, fax, snail mail. Will send it by all 3 methods if I have to!!

    By Blogger saum, at 14:54

  • I really like the concept of Team BCCI as opposed to the Indian Cricket team. That way, they can do whatever they want. Is anyone interested in floating an IPO to start Team India Inc. This would be traded in BSE and can be registered with SEC type org in India. Would have legal rules for insider trading, leaking of emails, will comply with Sarbanes Oxley.

Let the mis-manager GC and the incompetent SG, the lazy milking-money commentators like Gavaskar, Shastri and power hungry Dalmiyas and Pawars screw Team BCCI as much as they want.

How I wish there was an Indian Kerry Packer....

    By Blogger sauravganguly, at 15:21

  • Got this from The Hindu,

Replying to questions, he said the gag on the players or coach talking to the media did not apply to pre and post-match media conferences and also during the matches by the coach and captain.

They can talk, pre, post, during. So where is the gag :-)

    By Blogger GuchuGuy, at 15:36

  • The reasons monopolies are created is two fold:
    1. Lack of Substitute products.
    2. Government backing.

In the case of cricket, BCCI is a monopoly because there is no alternative and is some kind of a vague quasi-governmental behemoth. Unless somebody comes with an alternative, you can never ever challenge the BCCI. In which case the BCCI would become better or perish which is a natural course.

Australian Cricket Board faced that challenge with Kerry Packer and shaped up immediately. England was faced with real competition from soccer and came up with proper strategies to popularize the game. Windies seems to have lost the competition to Basketball and baseball.

BCCI continues to flourish because there is no alternative. Millions of fans can boycott it, press can rename it to Team BCCI. It doesn't matter. Fans will watch even if India loses. In england people switch to soccer. Where do Indians go? we can get glimpses of hope in Sania, Kartikeyan, Vishy Anand, Leander Paes and Anju. But these will be brief distractions from our main distraction which is cricket, more precisely, BCCI.

    By Blogger sauravganguly, at 15:39

  • Anand Vasu is pissed. He swore he could smell the kill...He went hoping to see the public beheading of Sourav Ganguly and plenty of blood-letting. Instead, he got to see a cheap clown called RSM perform. Poor guy.. its tough being a cricket journo these days!

    By Blogger Prasad, at 15:41

  • If i am chappel, i will resign to my job the moment ugly mahendra say that it's all not true and kewl my heals in Australia away from all these mess.

    What a Shame...

i feel sorry for the indian cricket, the way it's heading..
    sure for disastrous...

  • I still say we should hang the BCCI officials and fire SG Musharraf!

    By Blogger saum, at 15:51

  • I am sure RSM will come out and request SRT to restrain fans when stones will be pelted on BCCI eleven bus.. May be some lynching is due..

Dont blame the fans then.. This times its going to go beyond booing for sure...

    By Blogger JD, at 16:01

  • Hi guys

This is what really happened, in the review meeting. Looking at it, lot has happened that might change team selection policy.
Look at this: what really happened

    By Blogger devatha, at 16:04

  • We should ban media says india lost/win in future..

    By Blogger sri, at 16:08

  • This what really happened is just to please the overwhelming number of fans who are feeling disgusted..

This is just to hide the truth..

Ganguly cant face the fast bowling.. neither the spinners.. if they dont know this truth, they know nothing.. that can do whatever want.. we wont spend money on cricket..

By Blogger Thanks Chappel, at 16:09

  • Sunil Nain: We hear you buddy... we hear you!

    By Blogger anantha, at 16:11

  • Dont believe any of this "What Really Happened.. " It might have happened just to cool GC down.. and to buy time for the next move so that he does not resign and create a bigger issue...

If board does not change, nothing will..

By Blogger Thanks Chappel, at 16:11

  • @Sunil Nain

I can bet my last dollar you will be spending money or time on cricket. You can like it or hate it. You just cannot ignore it.

If SG doesn't do well, you will be here to say, "I told you so". If he does well, you will be the first to comment on how weak the bowling was.

    Reason: Lack of alternatives.

I am on a crusade searching for an entrepreneur like Kerry Packer ;-)
Hope that Rahul Mahendra guy is one.

    By Blogger sauravganguly, at 16:13

  • On facing fast bowling, Ganguly's concern .. "What will the public think of me?"..

Wow.. He is deaf.. The whole stadium booed him many times in India-Pak series.. does he really think booing the evolved natural reaction of homo sapians to appreciate their fellows?

Ouch.. Didnt he read the opinion polls or any articles other that those in Telegraph..

By Blogger Thanks Chappel, at 16:16

  • sauravganguly,

I havent spent a dollar on BCCI eleven since the last India-Pak series and convinced everyone I know to do the same(however some of those guys bought those illegal cheap streams which come a couple of bucks a match)..

As far as time is concerned, yes, tremendous.. I ofcourse will cheer everone that defeat this BCCI eleven left right and center.. I am sure I wont be disappointed.. I may subsribe in case BCCI eleven is being beaten very badly and I am sure of them.. After all cricket is for mental satisfaction.. (that too not before England beat Pak and Pak betas India)..

  • @Sunil again.
    Dude
Guys like Ganguly, Agarkar, Zaheer and Nehra are products of the system. They are the symptoms. Not the cause.

You can cure the headache with an aspirin. But if the underlying problem is something to do with your eyesight, you get rid of your headache forever by correcting the vision.

So, we should start with the BCCI. Otherwise you will continue to produce Azharuddins, Gangulys, Agarkars and Nehras.

SG is not the first a*hole and he will definitely not be the last to be produced by a corrupt system.

    By Blogger sauravganguly, at 16:24

  • I agree sauravganguly..

But short term corrections cant be totally eliminated till the big fix happens..

I hope this Tarannum names Jaggu and Co and more..

  • Mr.Saum's suggestions to Mr.Prem regarding a signature drive against BCCI's unwarranted patronage of Ganguly is worth pursuing. Mr.Prem, can u take the initiative?

    By Blogger Krish, at 16:39

  • krish.. thiese signature drive and papers with signatures wont even find the trashcan of BCCI.. why waste time..

By Blogger Thanks Chappel, at 16:43

  • As proved by Zee TV, Pawar and most importantly some guy who won the case against Dalmiya's appointment as Patron-in-Chief of BCCI,the only effective way to fight BCCI is in the courts. Collect good amount of money and write a good set of very clear ground rules (some 1000 pages, since these guys are very good at finding possible loopholes in every rule)and appoint Ram Jethmalani as your lawyer. Rahul mehra is doing the absolutely right thing.

    By Blogger devatha, at 20:00

  • oh dear, you poor poor poor fans of indian cricket. how your hero (chappell, MBE) has been made to suffer. all the tales he wrote, all the emails he sent to the media, all the suits he stitched to be "propah" ..alas, has been wasted.

now, as a self-respecting individual, who tried to expose a decietful, rumor-mongering SG, should he not RESIGN?? PLEASE influence him pronto. men of such stature should not wallow in mud. (even if the pay is a chunky amount). will you all sign a petition asking him to resign? i will frame it.

poor man chappell - my heart goes to him. he snoozes during games, tosses on behalf of the captain, ties bajji's turban every day, what a noble soul!

let us all rise in protest and FORCE him to resign. after-all, we owe him that, don't we?

    ;-)

By Blogger Mock Turtle, at 22:17

  • Dear Mockturtle

    - ooooh - you face de-dapitation by the blood hungry wolves in this pack

Just imagine - the guys are all sitting so pretty - not one of them has had the guts to say - I am sorry I called SG a bad name based on incorrect reports.

GC says SG is afraid of and cannot play fast bowling - must be that is why he has opened in all ODI matches played under GC' term - what was GC aiming at - let the team lose but this will atleast expose SG and remove him out of my way ?

also wonder why SG opened ODI & 20-20 while in Glamorgan - including against Shoaib etc. - surely there he had a choice as the senior pro ?

Any clues - our friends ?

    By Blogger GKD, at 03:53
