India Sri Lanka thread

Since the series begins today -- midnight my time here in NY, I think -- figured it deserves an open thread, for all discussions/comments/suggestions. Will as always be live when the game is on (yet to check with Willow if it is being telecast, hopefully I'll get the feed); in the interim, clearing some work, heading off to the gym and will be back here by 3 pm).

  • toney: what r those cheaper options? sgstreams?

    By Blogger Mayur, at 12:11

  • toney: It's just that I am sure of getting the stream; and since I use official computers, both at work and at home, I don't want to risk doing anything remotely illicit. It's more expensive yes, and I am not precisely rolling in money, but that can't be helped. :-)

  • What a disappointment that of the 7 ODIs only 2 are being played on weekends. This makes a big difference as far as viewership is concerned. Couldn't the board have arranged the schedule so that more matches could have been played on the weekends? I am sure it would certainly translate to more revenue for them.

    By Blogger hjrsingh, at 12:41

  • Indian board and schedules. What a joke. Out of all the 12 onedays only 3 are in watchable times for North American residents. For that matter see the Challengers. Matches were on Mon,Tue,Wed,Thu. Any other sane person would like to have them from Thu to Sunday.

    By Blogger Yorker, at 13:01

  • Prem, willow is actually offering the 12 ODIs for $129.

  • @prem:
I applaud your stand on sportingstreams.
As a site interested in the welfare of Indian cricket,
this blog should not encourage stealing of money from
    Indian cricket.
It's easy to talk about Indian cricketers and BCCI officials being selfish and so forth.

What about the fans? A few members here continue to
plug for sites that are harming Indian cricket
by stealing money (via live streams ).
Please don't do that if you have an iota of
interest in the welfare of Indian cricket.
Willow is the official rights holder for streaming
media; anyone else doing it, is stealing money.

Prem: please consider banning guys who promote illegal activity on this site.
As the blog owner, you migh be held legally liable for violations of rights. (You are a prominent
Indian cricket fan - and many eyes
could be on you) - this is just a friendly advice.

    I'm no Prem's spokeman,
but, Guys please don't put Prem in trouble.
He might be forced to shut down things here.
We need this site for many useful things.

    By Blogger Yacrik, at 13:03

  • Willow package is relatively cheap this time. I just signed up for all 12 matches at $129.99

    By Blogger nilcritz, at 13:09

  • hjrsingh,
I think it will be tough to have more than one game on weekend. Unlike other countries matches in India are played on different venues. And it will be too tough to ask players to travel and then play the game next day.

    By Blogger Vick, at 13:10

  • Yacrik,
Useful things mate? Honestly, show me one instance when the discussions here or any other blog on indian cricket has helped change things? If you want to support all the real expensive 'official' streaming fine mate! but some of us really don't feel like shelling out major dough for watching cricket. Remember we are all used to watching it for free in India, and trust me, it costs a lot to watch all the matches.

BTW, no one is causing any loss to the Indian cricket board by watching the feeds from sgstream or sportingstreams. Remember, BCCI has already sold the rights and made its share. If Willow and other official sponsors had more brains, they would have lowered the cost to attract more customers.

Also, If the owners of the BLOG feel that there should be no unofficial versions discussed here, so be it.

    By Blogger Dementor, at 13:14

  • yacrik,
I salute your attitude. As for comments, they are un-moderated. So Prem wouldnt be in any harm. In any case, I am sure it is obvious from his post that Prem stays clear of all these shady deals.

And respecting your stand on this, I shall refrain from mentioning these taboo sites again.

    By Blogger Toney, at 13:22

  • >>>BTW, no one is causing any loss to the Indian cricket board by watching the feeds from sgstream or sportingstreams. Remember, BCCI has already sold the rights and made its share. If Willow and other official sponsors had more brains, they would have lowered the cost to attract more customers. <<<

That doesn't mean that what they are doing is legal. It is stealing. If you cant afford it then dont watch it. It is basically saying that since I can't afford to buy a plasma TV, I have the right to steal it. And then accusing the TV makers of putting up a high price for it and saying that if they were smarter, they would lower the price so that more people could afford it.

Also, if Willow finds out that people use this blog to promote, discuss il-legal viewing of their telecast, then Prem can get into a no. of troubles..such as his blogging rights revoked, his blog shutdown, his IP address can be tracked to see where he is accessing this blog, his employer, partner can be told about the il-legal stuff that goes on here. Prem being a public personality has a lot to lose than gain.

By Blogger Oracle Guy, at 13:22

  • That is the reason I fully agree with Yacrik's post and caution Prem on allowing people to discuss such stuff.

By Blogger Oracle Guy, at 13:24

  • yacrik, I'll also be deleting my personal posts in this regard, so that no one comes to harm. I hope this settles the issue as far as I am concerned.

    By Blogger Toney, at 13:25

  • @dementor:
Remember we are all used to watching it for free in India, and trust me, it costs a lot to watch all the matches. ???

What if the employer said, since you are used to getting Rs salary in India, we will pay in Rs ???

    does not work.

    By Blogger Yacrik, at 13:32

  • sorry my post opened a can of worms. we in the uk usually get to see live cricket on sony via sky. i was looking through their tv guide and it didnt mention cricket tomorrow. also they (sony)have started a new channel in the uk (sonymax) which was being tested for the last couple of months and was available free. that channel has suddenly become subscription only making me wonder that is where they are going to show it. if so it mean i have to shelve out some more dough to sky thats all. i do enjoy it more on tv anyway.

    By Blogger inoc, at 13:35

  • Come on toney.. don't feel bad man.. mera usool hai:
Life mein kabhi tession lene ka nahi.. sirf dene ka.

On those lines, here is to cheer up the @mosphere here:

A guy walks into a post office one day to see a middle-aged, balding man standing at the counter methodically placing "Love" stamps on bright pink envelopes overprinted with hearts. He then takes out a perfume bottle and starts spraying scent all over them. Curiosity getting the better of him, he goes up to the balding man and asks him what he is doing.
The man says "I'm sending out 1,000 Valentine cards signed, 'Guess who?'"
    "But why?" asks the guy.
The man replies, "I'm a divorce lawyer!"

  • Streaming sites like sgstreams etc. serve a purpose. They allow us to pick and choose matches that we want to watch. If Willow and others had packaged their events better I'm sure lots of folks like me would have switched to Willow. Why can't they offer individual matches as well as packages? Charge more for individual matches but at least offer the option. With my work schedule I know I can watch at most three matches. $129 is too much to pay for 3 matches. I would have watched them for $20 a pop. I am leary of the streaming sites (note to everyone: if they are indeed illegal and if Willow etc. determine that they are being a big drain of their revenue they could come after us - after all they have our contacts via PayPal. Shades of Napster, Kazaa) but I may go with them.

    By Blogger hjrsingh, at 13:56

  • Yacrik,
I do agree with you. We should not promote any illegal streams in this blog. I too don't support them in any blogs or comments. However I would like to mention onething. I just hope people at willow get little smarter and offer the matches on a match to match basis. I don't mind spending proportionate or even little more for each match. But considering that most of the matches are on week days, I am not sure if many people can afford that kind of money and just use 20-30% of it. Moreover this is not cable or dish where atleast I can set it to record. I think all these things are leading to illegal streamings. All willow or any official right owners need to do is sit back and think how to get the maximum out of it.

By the way isn't ICC is on a way to promote cricket in this part of the world. How about making some efforts in making live cricket little more affordable for more people.

    By Blogger Yorker, at 13:59

  • santa, *L*. We all miss your tussles with Ruchir bhai (I am sure Ruchir misses them too). Hope they are renewed tonight.

And no, I wasnt feeling bad at all. Yacrik seemed to have made a valid point, so just showing that I agree with him.

    By Blogger Toney, at 14:07

  • inoc, just saw a flash on Sony that the ODI starts at 4:25 UK time, os i guess they are showing the game in the UK.

About time we came to know....

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 14:08

  • Toney,
Ever since I gave him Kudos, he has stopped posting. Makes me think that he likes tussles more.

Anyway, my take on this legal vs. illegal thing is :
Sharing info. is OK, actually doing it can be classified as illegal (depending upon the laws of the land). It is like this, if I were to tell you that hey Toney, I know this genius lockpicker, and man he is amazing, he ban open just about any lock in no time. And then you ask me his address, and I give that to you... that itself is not a crime.
So as far as telling that *XYZ* has feeds available for IND-SL games, I do not see anything wrong in it.
Now, if *XYZ*, is picking up the feed from willow, and then selling it in US, then yeah.. it is a shady thing, but if they are picking up from India then I do not think we would be in any trouble.

    By Blogger santa_from_NJ, at 14:24

  • One more question. How is anyone buying such feed supposed to know if it is OFFICIAL feed or not. Is consumer also at fault of not verifying it.

    By Blogger Yorker, at 14:26

  • and ofcourse if it is a BCCI event, how do I know who are the rights owners. They don't even have a website. Am I supposed to call their office in India before buying a feed. Oh wait a minute. Do they have office in first place

    By Blogger Yorker, at 14:28

  • Inoc, Yeap i saw the ad as well on Sony just now. Game starts at 4.25 am GMT and i think it will be shown in the rest of Europe as well. The damn rights have been sold so late that none of the websites have been updated.

    By Blogger Harsha, at 14:37

  • Willow certainly know how to fleece us poor US/Canada residents, and make its customers stand up for them! (judging by the views on this blog)
I will definitely not purchase any feeds from them--have had enough bad experiences with them in the past.
Just for the record, BCCI, Indian cricket, the Indians, or whatever, do not lose anything if you don't subscribe to Willow, or Dish or whoever has the rights for the series.

Guys, do what you like, buy from wherever you like. Just don't get in trouble. We are all in the same boat-we want to watch Indian cricket. Some can afford paying Rs 6000 or thereabouts to watch 12 ODI matches. Some can't.
And definitely, don't use Prem's blog to talk about shady/alternative feeds. Get together on your own forums/email correspondence and do so. We owe Prem a lot, and shouldn't abuse the trust he imparts us by giving us this blog-space.

By Blogger Dhruv Deepak, at 14:42

  • Wow! All 7 ODI's free of cost from the regular Desi Channel here in Canada..Talk about luck...

    By Blogger ilovecricket, at 14:47

  • santa,
I have several other arguments to say that so-and-so stream is doing nothing illegal. The point is, my argument or the ensuing responses to it are futile, as far as this blog is concerned. This being the reason, I decided to get out of it as fast as possible. I know I am not doing a great job at that though:).

    By Blogger Toney, at 14:48

  • Oracle:

That doesn't mean that what they are doing is legal. It is stealing. If you cant afford it then dont watch it. It is basically saying that since I can't afford to buy a plasma TV, I have the right to steal it. And then accusing the TV makers of putting up a high price for it and saying that if they were smarter, they would lower the price so that more people could afford it.

No one said that Sportingstreams was legal. And no one can tell me that if I can't afford to watch, I shouldn't watch it. If I can't afford Plasma TV, I won't steal it. I will buy it at 1/4 the cost from a person who is selling it cheap. I want to enjoy the things that I like. If someone is pricing them high, I will go to a person who is selling cheap. It is as simple as that.

Maybe you are a very high principled person; and there is nothing wrong with that. I respect that. But not everyone is like you. I feel Willow is forcing people to pay very high price to watch cricket. So I will not go to willow; I will go to Sportingstreams. I don't care where they get it from. It is not as if I am commiting a robery or murder.

If Willow was smarter, they would sell individual matches online like they used to do. But no. They stopped doing that when lot of people started buying individual matches. Now they force people to buy the complete 12 ODI package. Tell me, how can we watch those ODIs that fall on weekdays? And still pay for them??? THAT, to me, is legal coercion; and I will not be a party to it. I will pay way way less on sportingstreams and see only those matches that I can comfortably see.

There is no need to get so emotional and excited about Willow or Sportingstreams. Just be cool and do what you think is correct. :-)

By Blogger Ruchir Joshi, at 14:52

  • people will keep on purchasing products like sportingstream (exactly the way people use limewire and kazaa) if there the risk reward ratio is favorable.
as a user of this site i dont need to worry much abt getting prosecuted if I am watching it on my PC at home. the risk is higher for people who start this site for benefit and thats why there arent many people doing it.. just one or 2 websites..
if its cheap and risk is low, people WILL buy it.. morality or no morality

    By Blogger criclogic, at 14:56

  • Toney,
What you did is fine.. I was just presenting my take on it. I am not going to watch the 12 ODIs anyways, ODIs in India are just too boring.. Remember the Dharmendra movies during 1984-90? The likes of Inteqaam ka Khoon :-), Dushmani ka zalzala etc. which had no storyline at all, just plain dishum dishum. To me ODIs in India are like that.. just hit hit and hit. (Problem is, that off late India cannot even hit.. we are always like 120/5 at around 20-25 overs mark)

    By Blogger santa_from_NJ, at 14:57

  • Ruchir,
    glad u r back.
And you know what.. you amazed me with your views on this streams issue. I would have placed a bet that you would have agreed with that ytcrick guy :-)

And I like that example of plasma TV. I myself bought it from OakTree Rd in Edison, for about 60% of the reg. price. I have a receipt for it and the complete users manual. Now if the shopkeeper is found out to be a *chor*, than how can I be prosecuted? Am I to verify everything I purchase? I went to a shop, I liked the product, I bought it, and have receipt for it.. should'nt it be enough.. or should I hire PI to to the ivestigation?

    By Blogger santa_from_NJ, at 15:05

  • santa: that is a funny comparison of the ODIs on indian pitches to the dishum dishum movies produced by dharmendra... r the names of the movies u gave valid in other words r they real movie names (not that i am questioning it and i wud be stupid if i did it as anything is possible in bollywood)? just curious...

    By Blogger Mayur, at 15:10

  • Toney,
LOL abt the likeness of Dharmendra movies and ODIs in INdia. And sadly, very true too.
Hey, if you bought the plasma TV for 60%, do point me to the store.

    By Blogger Toney, at 15:12

  • Santa, that was the best comparision of One days in India. I totally agree and for that reason I am loosing iterest in one day cricket. Now imaging what would be a 20x20 match would be like. Oh dear.. God save the cricketing art called bowling.

    By Blogger Yorker, at 15:13

  • Oops, I meant to address my previous post to Santa, not to myself

    By Blogger Toney, at 15:13

  • yorker, if bowlers resot to bowling your namesake, it wouldnt matter what the batsman tried to do.

    By Blogger Toney, at 15:14

  • santa:

I concur what you say. Too bad I did not agree with yacrick ;-)

You are right, how would I know if sportingstreams is illegal or not.

I can give Napster's example. Before the court judgement, no one knew Napster was illegal. After the judgement nearly all users, including me, stopped using it. Not only becasue it was illegal, but becasue, after court declared that Napster was doing illegal business, FBI (or some other agency) issued a press release that from that day anyone "caught" using Napster to download songs etc. would be libel to pay about $10,000 (or was it $25K) in fine and/or jail sentence. Point to be noted here is that this punishment was active from the day of the court judgement. Those using Napster before that day were safe.

So, until some court declares sportingstreams illegal, I don't think we should worry about crime or punishment.

By Blogger Ruchir Joshi, at 15:17

  • Mayur,
No the names are not real, but than they had similar names :-)

The guy whom I bought from, is now-a-days not 2 be seen at the shop, but the shop is still there. Infact, you can go to any appliances shop in any Indian market, and give them the model number u want to buy, and they'll give u a decent price. They do not have display models, coz they are small shops.
But buy only if you trust the shopkeeper.. coz they tell u upfront --> No returns and no warranty sir, if u have a problem with TV, contact the manufturer.

By Blogger Oracle Guy, at 15:35

  • Is the quality of picture same on Willow and SGStream?
Or stolen stream is diluted or like a Black Label in the Indian market?

    By Blogger CrickTip, at 15:36

  • Oracle Guy, So how do we know that sporting stream is illegal ?

    By Blogger Prasad, at 15:39

  • Guys,
any new or manufactured stories as to why Ganguly faked injury to skip Nagpur (again) ODI?

    By Blogger CrickTip, at 15:40

  • Friends - To bring the topic back to the ODI ... I think GG not playing is either a mistake or a decoy (last minute GG plays) or accomodating SG for the next ODIs.

Remember if GG performs good at the TOP then SG's inclusion will be an issue ... who will he replace?

    By Blogger @mit, at 15:43

  • CRICKTIP: Yeah, another conspiracy theory of SG missing in Nagpur would be most interesting. SOme one will certainly come up with a theory that Bhajji is going to underperform tomorrow under RD and OF COURSE Ganguly told him to do so. God help Bhajji if he goes for runs tomorrow.

    By Blogger Prasad, at 15:45

  • ORACLE GUY: So how do we know that sporting stream is illegal ?

    By Blogger Prasad, at 15:46

  • prasad, anticipatory bail for Bhajji? I hope Bhajji does well though. Murali Karthik breathing down his neck must be good motivation.

    By Blogger Toney, at 15:46

  • Even Manjeraker had made a comment sometime back that MK plays better under RD than SG ..... now why is that?

    By Blogger @mit, at 15:47

  • oracle:

If it is known that the person who is selling the Plasma for 1/4 price has basically selling smuggled/stolent from somewhere and you know it, then you are equally guilty.

My point is, has any court declared sportingstreams as illegal? It is your assumption that it is doing illegal activities. But has any govt agency declared it so? Until sportingstreams is declared illegal by courts, how can I be accused of stealing? How do you know that they are not doing legal business? Just because they are selling cricket so cheap you think that they are doing it illegal. Maybe they are not doing it illegal!!! Who knows??

No one says you cant rob a bank, of course you can but at the same time you cant stop me from saying that you are a 'robber'. Hey but that Bank had my money in it too and I have all the right to report a robbery.

I assume you are talking about sportingstreams here again. So, I am not stealing any signals, am I?? Since I am not, I do not become the "robber". I am only receiving signals from sportingstreams. Same like a bank robber goes to a shop and gives robbery money to buy a donut. Shop owner can't tell from seeing the dollar bill whether it is robbery money or not. Wait... he can, if he knows the serial numbers given by police. Similarly, I have to be told by courts that sportingstreams is illegal. Once they do that I will stop using it.

But I will not promote a site that is indirectly harming Indian cricket by piracy.

BCCI has already sold telecast rights. So any harm to Indian cricket, direct or indirect, stops there. The fact that they got desired price tells us that there is no harm to indian cricket. Any effect will be felt by willow (probably). And my contention is that they SHOULD feel the effect so that very soon they start selling cricket at the rate that viewers feel is correct, not what they feel is correct. And mind you, ciewers will never ask for an abnormally low price. When willow sold every match for $10, I used to buy from them. Anyways, remember... Customer is always right!!! Very famous catch phrase for salesmem...

If I can afford it, I will watch it, if I cant I will follow over the Internet. That's it.

Very true. If that's what you want to do, go ahead.

You are, by buying services that IL-LEGAL, you are becoming a partner in crime.

Again, it is your assumption that sportingstreams is illegal. They have not been declared so by any court of law.

There are many ways, I pool in money with friends to watch those games at a friends place. I sacrifice my time and comfort to stay legal and do the things right way.

This method may be good for you but surely not for all. These matches start at night. Married people with or without kids can not watch all matches with friends. Not all want to sacrifice time and comfort to watch cricket. People want to adjust cricekt in their lives, not their lives into cricket.

I will and and I am within my rights to call a stealing as 'stealing'.

Again, my friend, let sportingstreams be declared illegal before you call its users "stealers". :-)

By Blogger Ruchir Joshi, at 15:47

  • What do you guys think are the chances of SG comiong back into teh side --- if we lose both matches or win boeth matches etc.... I think if the selectors gave SRT a comeback without regaining form.... then SG obviously needs to be given one more ...

    By Blogger @mit, at 15:48

  • Oracle Guy,

No, I do not know that sporting streams is illegal.
Just as I do not know if that shopkeepr is a *chor*. As long as I have a valid receipt of my purchase (and in case of the TV, I have paid the state tax) I am OK. Now, if that shopkeeper is valid, but choose not to report state tax, or if that shopkeeper is selling stolen stuff, how do I know?
So in case of *XYz streams*, I am not going to question where they are getting there feeds from.
It is not a word of mouth deal, which is the way people sell illegal things, they are advertising over internet and they have their website.

    OK, here is another example.
If I buy prescription drugs over internet, ( say from Canada or some place else) and later on it turns out that the seller is actually stealing things OR not following the local laws, I can bet you that FBI is not coming after me to arrest or prosecute. At the most, they'll contact me to get more details and make their case more solid.

  • I personally wouldn't be surprised if the selectors (read:Chappell) will keep SG out for a while longer so RD can "settle down" and "get comfy" in the job.

    By Blogger Prasad, at 15:50

  • Guys , A final word on Sporting Streams will help. Is it legal or illegal

    By Blogger indCric, at 15:50

  • indcric, only lawyers specialized in this field will be able to tell you that.

    By Blogger Toney, at 15:51

  • One more thing guys, back in 1999, my friends in India would actually place the webcam infront of Tv (ESPN telecast), and I would watch it in US. (we all had broadband). It was little slow, but atleast I could see.
    Was this illegal?

    By Blogger santa_from_NJ, at 15:51

  • I wouldn't have problem with that, may I add. I think its always difficult to have an ex-skipper in the side. All we need is to ask SRT about Azza.
Anyway, with 12 ODI's we will give us a preview whether RD is good enough or not to lead us in to the world cup.

    By Blogger Prasad, at 15:53

  • remember rediff did B-B-B online cricket commentary like CI??
It was shout down because CI has exclisive rights to B-B-B. all legal stuff.

Guys - it's very obvious nowhere in the worlds 2 people
hold exclusive rights. It's in the press that willow has
the rights. so it means no one else will have. It's all illegal if others did it.

I don't think any of us are in trouble.
but I fear for Prem (frankly just his blog site), it's possible that willow might come after him becasue he works at an rediff company and rediff site has a link
    to this site.

    By Blogger Yacrik, at 15:56

  • Rediff and Prem may not fight the legal battle if Willow came after them. Just one letter from the legal dept, they will find it is not worth it to let guys plug for their favorite streaming site.
frankly, is there a monetary rewards for doing the blog for them? don't think so.
why will they take any trouble to defend something that is not worth their 2 minutes.

  • I think that SG will be given a chance --- coz he did what they asked him to do --- prove fitness and form.... now even if some of them personally do not agree with his inclusion ... he will be recalled.... and take place of Kaif (as he is out for the series I beleive) ....

    By Blogger @mit, at 16:06

  • that reminds me, any updates on Kaif's injury?

    By Blogger Toney, at 16:08

  • It's serious mistake if they don't play GG.
might cost them the match. GG is a match winner in
    the making.
Kaif can be let go - no harm done (to the team that is)

    By Blogger Yacrik, at 16:08

  • As for opening the innings --- i agree with Prem that we missed a trick by not taking GG ... now I think MSD and VS will have to open ... or Yuvi --- coz he will not be of much use once spinners come in...

    By Blogger @mit, at 16:09

  • I doubt if SRT will open ---

    By Blogger @mit, at 16:09

  • I won't be surprised if Kaif's injury does not end his INT career (unitentionally).
I think he is history with all the talented
youngesters and Yuvraj becoming more responsible with his approach. From what we can make out of GC, he think highly of Yuvraj. but seems to have put Kaif on notice. Kaif has been moving up and down the order, however, Yuvraj has been stable.

  • BTW, when did fletcher become the most respected coach in the world?

    By Blogger gsharma, at 16:21

  • >>>Oracle Guy, So how do we know that sporting stream is illegal ? <<<

Because I have not heard BCCI giving any telecast rights to sportingstreams. Nimbus has all the rights to distribute the rights all over the world, they have given these exclusive rights to Willow for everywhere except UK and to dierct TV in USA. SO obviously anyone else telecasting it will be il-legal.

By Blogger Oracle Guy, at 16:22

  • I agree with Gsharma --- SMG for a change was right .... Eng is now basking in the glory of Ashes but their tactics before that were a shame to cricket and it was "boooring" to the core...

    By Blogger @mit, at 16:23

  • Agarkar MUST be in the playing 11.

    Yesterday, Bond conceded 50+ runs.
Bond conceded 13 runs in one over at death and also lost it for NZ. I did not hear a boo from anyone.

I will have to speak up for Agarkar. Has done excellent in ZIM and at Championship.

  • Agarkar has 20 wickets in the last 9 matches , i.e. in 2005. The best average and strike rate, probably IP is just ahead of him.. On current form and performance stats, AA deserves a place in the team. Especially considering Santh is inexperienced and the likes of ZK and Nehra are either too profligate or delicate.

    By Blogger Tiger, at 16:29

  • I agree - but looksl ike he will be in more as a SS or mostly in place of MK

Actually they do apply to the buyer also.

By Blogger Oracle Guy, at 16:42

  • tiger: i totally agree with u... when i looked at the stats page for the ind-sl preview, i was pleasantly surprized to see AA with the lowest strike rate (18 odd) that is phenomenal (though he has taken a bagful against ZIM)... he is definitely in GC's scheme of things and will definitely feature in the playing XI...

    By Blogger Mayur, at 16:44

  • one more interesting point is that the game starts at 9 am... the team bowling first will have a big advantage for 2 reasons... they will be able to use the early morning moisture in the pitch and secondly they will be in a better position to use the super sub... this is really unfair... i hope RD wins the toss today...

    By Blogger Mayur, at 16:47

  • >>>And my contention is that they SHOULD feel the effect so that very soon they start selling cricket at the rate that viewers feel is correct, not what they feel is correct. And mind you, ciewers will never ask for an abnormally low price. When willow sold every match for $10, I used to buy from them. <<<

First of all 'Fair or low Price' is a very relative term. $10 can be very reasonable for you but not for someone who lives in Somalia or Uganda. The fact that BCCI has been charging them hell of a lot money to telecast has forced them to raise the price. So it means willow/directTv isn't the one who has jacked the price, but its BCCI who has done it.

By Blogger Oracle Guy, at 16:50

  • All AA chanters, you need to wait only for one over to Jaisuriya. How can you forget the battering he has got from all and sundry? He bowls 2 god and 2 bad and 2 "4 balls" every over

    By Blogger J, at 16:54

  • j: i am not an AA chanter... the numbers speak for themselves... check out this stats summary by cricinfo

    http://content-usa.cricinfo.com/indvsl/content/story/222968.html

u will see that AA has an average of 18.65 while the next best is MK at 29.80... IP is averaging 30.82... if u compare the economy rate, then AA is around 4.82 while IP is expensive at 4.97... if AA has played against ZIM, then so has IP so why bash AA? oh ya, he gives 1 4-ball every over, but if u check the averages u will realize that we do not have anyone (besides HS) better than him in terms of econ rate... we always compare him to what he cud be (i.e. if he was consistent and all) but if u look at it, we dont have any of this super-consistent bowlers available... do we? who wud u replace AA with at this point of time? any options? ZK? AN? who? try out someone new, well then thats what we r doing here with SS and RPS? we r no AUS to expect shane watson or brad hogg... are we?

    By Blogger Mayur, at 16:58

  • j - maybe AA will get carted around.. but point is that he is probably the best of all available options.. who else would you put in the team in his place? Ashish-brokenankle-Nehra or Zaheer-15runsin1stover-Khan or Lakshmipathy-strugglingtobowl120mph-Balaji?

    By Blogger Tiger, at 16:58

  • I know that ATN is carrying the games in Canada. Just get the mothly subscription for 1 month and you'll get all the ODIs. In fact if you cancel before the month is up, it will be less than the monthly rate. FYI the rate is CAD 15 p.m.

    By Blogger Bala, at 17:01

  • Mayur/Tiger - We all know what AA cannot do but we for sure dont know what SS is capable of. lets try him out for 6 matche against SL.

Surely I would always put IP above AA. He may be very slightly ahead on economy but he is better placed at taking crucial wickets then AA.

The very sight of AA jogging is shut door for an opening bowler.

    By Blogger J, at 17:09

  • Actually, Rogers Cable in Canada will usually give the first 3 months of any international channel (including ATN) for 5 CAD per month if you push them...

    By Blogger sb_tor, at 17:10

  • >>>Again, my friend, let sportingstreams be declared illegal before you call its users "stealers". <<<

Ruchir, sometimes you just amuse me with your reasoning. You just change colors at will depending at what suits you.

Anyways, i dont know where you live, but if you live in the USA, here is the law :-

  • Can anybody throw some light on the operating model of SportingStream. What does he charge the 7 Pounds for. And what is this concept of finding an link ..... Seems a bit complicated .... Does anybody know who they are ....

    By Blogger indCric, at 17:23

  • j: i dont think u understood what i said earlier... here is what i said...

we always compare him to what he cud be (i.e. if he was consistent and all) but if u look at it, we dont have any of this super-consistent bowlers available... do we? who wud u replace AA with at this point of time? any options? ZK? AN? who? try out someone new, well then thats what we r doing here with SS and RPS? we r no AUS to expect shane watson or brad hogg... are we?

sso what i meant was that i totally agree that we shud try out new bowlers like SS and RSP (if u remember SS has already been selected to open the bowling) as we never know where we might unearth a McG... u just never know... maybe SS is the answer... maybe not... so if we decide to go with 3 seamers, then we shud go with AA as the third seamer besides IP and SS... as i said earlier, AA has done great in the last couple of years and GC must be working with him on improving his consistency... even if he stays where he is, i think he is a good 3rd seamer as tiger mentioned all the other seamers like ZK, AN and LB r out of contention at this point of time...

what i did not like is the image that AA has created that he gives away too many 4-balls... so thats why i tried to compare him with IP to show that he is actually better than IP... imo IP hasnt proved himself yet on indian pitches and ODI pitches r expected to be worse... his new ball spell is definitely lethal, but his ability to bowl at the death is EXTREMELY questionable... even in the snrs vs A game, he gave away 27 runs in the last 3 overs... ZK finally lost the game for the seniors, but IP was equally to blame... i havent seen IP enough in ODIs to claim that he will do good in the long run... moral of the story: AA shud be selected since there is no one better than him available for selection... he will definitely be dropped if we end up having 3 McGs in the lineup....

    By Blogger Mayur, at 17:26

  • toney, my point is why is the media so hell-bend on focusing on non-cricketing issues?

I am sure the likes of Fletcher, Waugh (Flintoff and Vaughan) have given a lot of insight into the game in their books, so why focus on "who said what about who"?

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 17:27

  • saurabh, you know I wasnt serious, right?
And abt why the media concentrates on it - to whet the apetite of most people who find these titbits more amusing than, say detailed description of the technical changes that Waugh made in his game during a rough period.
To be frank, I am not sure autobiographies focus on cricket alone. Why should they? I am not saying that Waugh should make public every single thing that happened in the dressing room. But biographies are also about letting the world know how they felt during a particular episode or how so and so is a great team player or why a certain decision had to be made, right?

    By Blogger Toney, at 17:33

  • My point being, Waugh must have had the sales of the book in mind too, when he started out on writing this book. The same thing applies for the Freddies and the Fletchers, else why should they embark on books when they are so obviously not done with their current jobs? If the sportsmen themselves can do such things, why not the reviewers?

it's going to be 5-2 for India.

    By Blogger Yacrik, at 17:41

  • look for VS to get at least 2 hundreds.

    By Blogger Yacrik, at 17:42

  • I think both teams will start playing better as the series goes. SL will win matches in which India makes mistakes, since they do the basics better.
    SL 4-3

    By Blogger Toney, at 17:43

  • yacrik - I think fellows like Dilshan hold the key.. time and again they have strangled the Indian batting line-up. I am not convinced that this time Rao/Dravid/Yuvi/Dhoni/Yadav will be able to break that stranglehold.. Sri Lanka have perfected the art of bowling in the ODI, especially the middle 15-40 overs. Where Murali bottles one end up and the others do their bit to keep the RR down under 5. And if Vaas can get an early wicket or two, then Zoysa or Mahroof can then build on the insecurity that exists within the minds of the Indian line-up.. I mean the likes of Rao/Raina/Yadav/Dhoni and even yuvi to a certain extent are not really firmly entrenched in the side.. and are thus short on confidence.. While on the other side, you have Mahela, Sanga, Jaya, Attapattu - all these generally feast on Indian bowling. I think its going to be really tough for India. I'd say 5-2 to Lanka! And will pray that I am proved wrong!
P.S. Actually I think chandana might be the trump card for the Lankans.

    By Blogger Tiger, at 17:50

  • im with yea tiger. I'd say more like 6-1 SL

By Blogger Narad Han, at 18:09

  • I think this will go India's way - 4-3...with Sachin/Dravid/VS/SS all having to prove a point....they will come good ..with a vengeance..will still be close though...

    By Blogger ilovecricket, at 18:24

  • I guess if the strategies are not altered, then winning the series for India is going to be tough..

However I believe that Some of our guys are capable of giving out of the blue performances.. SRT and VS might click in couple of matches each.. Sometimes factors like toss give you the extra bit you want.. like bat first and pitch started spinning in the second innings..

Hence I am sure we are in for atleast 3 (minimu two matches..)..

Now if appropriate srategy change can be utilized, like sending Sehwag around 15th over.. play five bowlers and have a Bat as supersub.. etc.. All this can win a couple more matches..

Hence its going to 4-3.. either way.. I hope we win.

By Blogger Thanks Chappel, at 18:25

  • I think ppl who are giving India no chance need to realize a couple of things. First, we have the home advantage this time and that is the major difference between the matches that took place in Sri-lanka a couple of months, 2 out of 3 of which should have been won by us anyways. They are touring us after a gap of 8 yrs, and surely are going to take some time to get used to the conditions (might be too late before they do). Sri Lankans probably have the worst overseas records out of all the top teams. Agreed that India is short on experience and is rebuilding a new team right, but does that mean that youngsters can't come good? The Dravids, Gangulys, Tendulkars, Zaheers, all came good when young. If we don't believe in our youngsters then everytime one or two senior players leave our team, we can say that India stand no chance. Of course I am not saying India is going to win the series hands down. I think its 50-50 at this time and could go 4-3 either way. All depends on how things progress in the series, changes we go through after the first two matches, form of players and performances of the untried. After all how many of you though Pakisatan would WIN the series after being 0-2 down earlier this year?

    By Blogger AK, at 18:29

  • SL suck outside of SL. SL's strategy works in SL and it's not going to work in India. I'm betting on India to come ahead early.

    By Blogger Yacrik, at 18:41

  • @ yacrik
Agree with you completely man, and SL loosing the pratice match to Mumbai is enough proof of that. Sure there was no Vaas and Murali, but then there was absolutely NOBODY in the mumbai team either. All the key players are out playing the Duleep. And I just can't buy that even without Vaas and Murali Sri-lanka is not capable of beating Mumbai. It has to do with them not being good overseas, and not being good able to adapt to Indian conditions. I am sure it will happen, the question is when?

    By Blogger AK, at 18:47

  • I think we're going to teach the Lankies a lesson. WE'll win this series convincingly.

  • It's about time Mr.Sehwag showed up on match day for India. He has been underperforming for a long time now. Sehwag and SRT have to perform big time in this series for India to have a chance.

Kaif's injury is a big blow for India. He has been our best ODI bat this season. It is good to see Ganguly and Laxman out of the lineup. Raina and Rao will be better in the field than these two and may even perform credibly with the bat. JP Yadav might be the dark horse for India in the middle overs (9-1-33-0 , 8.4-1-31-1, 6-0-28-0 were his spells in Challenger) as far as the 5th bowler goes.

If RD is bold and ruthless, he would keep Bhajji as sub and pick Kartik (5-fer in finals of Challenger) and Santh (man of the series in Challenger) in the starting eleven. If only Agarkar can control his tendency of bowling 4-balls every over, he will be turn out to be better than Khan or nehra.

Here's wishing Team India all the best. My prediction is 4-3 India in this series. It has been long overdue and with the dead/unfit horses of the team (Gangu, Lax, Khan, Bala, Nehra) out, this team is finally going to start winning again.

  • Hey I am awake and waiting for the match to start another hour to go. Since my post and the reply to it long long ago was instrumental in starting the debate about the righteousness of watching cricket matches from xyzstreams I feel obliged to post my feelings on it.
As oracle guy said we all know that xyzstreams doesn’t have the right to provide the streams for us to see. You may argue ruchir but u know, although not proven in a court of law, that they are not owners or rightful users of the streams copyright. Taking the stance that we didn’t know that they don’t have the right to sell us the product may hold up in a court of law but the fact remains that we are actually aware that xyzstreams are not authorized to do what they r doing.
I feel rather than the plasma tv example, I can think of a better one. All of us who have spent some part of our adult lives in India have bought or are atleast aware of the paanch ka dus cinema ticket gang. I know it isn’t paanch ka dus anymore but the idea is the same. I am sure the majority of ppl who have been in India have at some point bought cinema tickets from these guys. Obviously they knew they were being partners in the crime but it was a known fact and it didn’t bother me atleast. Oracle guy you may be different but that is the fun of a place like this where you meet ppl with different viewpoints.
We bought tickets from these guys because it suited us. Heres the parallel to this situation today. It may suit us to accept doing a little wrong in accepting xyz streams because we think the chances of us being hauled onto court and punished is virtually non existent and therefore we do what is beneficial for us financially or otherwise at this moment. Also if we are hauled onto court, however slim the chances are, we have the argument that we didn’t know that we were doing something illegal so we are not to blame.
Rather than be opposed to oracle guy I actually hail him for being honest with himself and doing what he thinks is right but at the same time I don’t blame any of us who would choose to go the other way because it is available and has no risks whatsoever.
It is a matter of personal discretion and should be left at that.
PS heres to India winning today - cheers

  • I have found a website: www.criceton.tv which will telecast matches with live video streaming on the desktop for 10 pounds per match.

Has anyone any experience with it?

    Is it legal?

    How is the quality?

One and a half hour left - please reply ASAP

    By Blogger JAGS, at 22:30

  • by the way i am expecting to watch the match on sony (fully subcribed member, no illegality there) as i have been reliably informed by bloggers here. if sony doesnt show it then i may be forced to get one of the streams - no willow in the uk. legal or not i would much rather watch than listen which is another option on CI.

    By Blogger inoc, at 22:41

  • @ chan
i have never used it before nor have i seen the site mentioned on this blog or elsewhere. there are cheaper options i believe which have been used by the bloggers here and they seem to be happy with it. scroll upwards for info

    By Blogger inoc, at 22:44

  • Indcric - As far as I am concerned, Sportingstreams is il-legal and I have a rule in life, never do something which isillegal. But Again if you think it is legal, then go for it.

J - I am not stopping you from subscribing to SS. Its just that I have as much opinion to say my opinion on this forum.

  • 5-2 India .. Go India ..

Cant wait to see SRT in action.

    By Blogger nilcritz, at 22:50

  • of course you have oracle guy. you may have read my take on it and i believe places like these are richer because of different opinions and as far as i am concerned it brings other viewpoints to the fore which i may not have envisaged in the first place. as a relative newcomer to this place let me congratulate all you guys for making this forum so good. i am hooked and will be for ever.

    By Blogger inoc, at 22:57

  • totally agree with you nilcriz. stayed up all night to see SRT. It helps that i am not working tomorrow though. lol

    By Blogger inoc, at 22:58

  • @inoc:
"Since my post and the reply to it long long ago was instrumental in starting the debate about the righteousness of watching cricket matches "

Why do you think you were instrumental in starting the debate? I don't understand... who brought up the legalities first?
    I think it was Prem...

    By Blogger Yacrik, at 23:02

  • indcric:

I think your question is that if sportingstreams is declared illegal then will its subscribers be prosecuted?

I will give the Napster example again. When Napster was declared illegal, FBI (or some other agency) sent out a press release that any individual found using Napster from the date it was declared illegal will be prosecuted. All the members who were using Napster before it was declared illegal will not be prosecuted because they were not dealing with an illegal entity.

So, even though we knew Napster was illegal, we were safe in using it "till" it was not declared illegal. Similarly, we are safe in using sportingstreams until it is declared illegal.

Issue here, raised by various bloggers, is that is it morally correct to use sportingstreams because they may or may not be doing legal business?? My reply to that was and is that if you want to use it, use it. If not then leave it (last line of my comment timed 14:52). Why create an issue about it?

I stopped using napster the day it was declared illegal. I will do the same with sporting stream. But to say that I am a "robber" or a "thief" in using it is hillarious. It is a facility that is up and running and is available to all for use. I will use it until it remains available. What is wrong with that?? Honestly, the issue started with one blogger saying not to talk about such site here on this blog because it may harm Prem. I agree; don't talk about it. But to ask other to not use such site is a bit too much, I think.

  • OK guys .. someone help me stay awake :) .... what does the weather report looks like .

By Blogger Pankaj Tripathi, at 23:04

  • @ruchir:

the point is bloggers here should not be promoting illegal activities.. which might get Prem in trouble since he is a promonent cricket fan.
Just one letter (that is right), just one letter from the legal dept of Willow and rediff will make sure Prem shuts down the blog site.

    By Blogger Yacrik, at 23:06

  • Ruchir Sahab .. Leave this discussion bandhu , there are various sites having link to various streamnig modes. Let the guys watch what they want ....

By Blogger Pankaj Tripathi, at 23:06

  • @ yacric
no i have no claim to that fame but i posted if anybody knew who was showing it in the uk. in reply to that the stream addresses were posted and the debate started. i agree that prem posted that he had to have willow because of legal matters, his was the third post in this forum and mine was the fourth.

    By Blogger inoc, at 23:08

  • that is right - nobody, hopefully, is an undercover cop here. we are not here to stop anyone from doing anything (no power to do that).
it is just that we should not promote illegal activities.. and also there is the moral issue.

    By Blogger Yacrik, at 23:09

  • inoc: actually it was toney who started promoting one of the stream sites (the very first message, which has since been deleted)

    By Blogger Yacrik, at 23:11

  • yacrik:

I agree, let us leave this dicussion. I was only replying to a legality question raised by indcric....

    elected to bat first.

    By Blogger nilcritz, at 23:11

  • @ pankaj not good weather report mate.

    @ ruchir
i am certain that if these streams are declared illegal they will never ever prosecute ppl for using it becoz you can always hide under the shadow of 'i didnt know'. as long as it has not been publicly proclaimed to be illegal by some authority i donr think anybody can actually prosecute ppl for using it.

    By Blogger Yacrik, at 23:22

  • Lets see how long though :)

By Blogger Pankaj Tripathi, at 23:22

  • Good to bat first. Facing Murali and Upal would have been very difficult while chasing on this spin pitch

    By Blogger Krishna, at 23:23

  • path breaking indeed - a month ago it looked impossible that SG would be kept out like this. cannot believe GC managed something like this in 3 months time.
Will it make a positive difference to the performance? I think we are about to find out...

    By Blogger Yacrik, at 23:24

  • I would have loved to see GG open with VS.

By Blogger Pankaj Tripathi, at 23:24

  • how long depends on what the guys here in these 2 ODI do... if they perform well and win, what do you do? can't change the winning combo, can you? it all depends on these guys now; the matter has been out of SG's hands.

    By Blogger Yacrik, at 23:26

  • Personally .. I dont see along road for Chappel as well..
    anyway here we go ..
