obviously our game plan wud be to get about 100-110 runs from murali and vaas in their 20 overs without loosing more than a couple of wickets to them and then go after the rest of the inexperienced attack. looks to me like a high scoring match. sehwag must deliver its a long time since he performed in ODIs. This is a good team selected lets see what they can do
Prem...the supersub was probably a logical choice...the pitch is supposed to assist (cricinfo) spinners in the latter half...so Dravid goes with MK as supersub, if India win the toss, they bat first and MK becomes a factor later, if India lose the toss, they are likely to field, and MK would be a lesser factor anyway....
SL on the other hand have gone with a safe choice of an allrounder....where depending on need they can make the switch in either inning...
neo: I'd like to see Yadav bowl regularly a bit more, before I get to where I think of him as supersub material. But then, the team's had a much closer look at him, hopefully they sussed his capabilities out right. That's the thing with this team, actually -- a few imponderables. Rao, Yadav, Sreeshanth... if they click, the team is made, long term. If they don't, back to the drawing board.
new bowler same effect the match will be decided by how well we field and use our power plays, i think sending a pinch hitter anyone JP,IP,MS,AA wud not be a bad idea.
prem...I think the GC era will see India being around the drawing board a lot, I personally don't think Yadav or Rao will last the distance, only because there are perhaps better players...on Sreesanth I will not try to argue with you, we all know where your heart lies there....
Hope that we play sensible today for full 100 overs, time and again we have played just 40-60 overs well and then given to the opposittion. My fingers Crossed for the oppenning pair.
PREM : How is bhabhiji feeling now. Back to normal? Best wishes.
cricket after long last in the subcontinent!! Maybe thats the recipe for getting the form back!!Flat tracks, batting first, hysteric crowds!! Boy do I miss cricket
neo: Oh, I have no such parochial inclinations, pal -- IF he turns out to be a useful bowler, be glad, yes, cos I really was sorry to see the state of cricket in my home state in the 80s and early to mid 90s, but I'm not holding a brief for a bloke just because he is a Keralite. About the others, bang on -- I don't get that sense about Rao or Yadav either, that they will be around for too long.
losing now, it takes a while for them to activate ur account. if u go to the sporting links forum, u will see a post for ind-sl match. it gives u an email address to send an email to. hold on - i will see if i can find the instructions for u
Pretty weak in the middle rnt we? Loads of inexperience after Yuvi!! Slightly scary situation, asPrem says this might make the team though. And this is about the perfect time for finding out if these guys want it !!!
Maybe sschin wants to set the tone a bit!! Let the lankan 's know hes back... Maybe make Vas change his line and length a bit.... Or maybe I am dreaming ...
Okay, one thing pretty evident -- the injury hasn't made SRT think of refashioning his game. You need confidence in your elbow -- and back -- to play that pick-up
Boy!! Awesome shot that. Prem, don't you get the feeling that ST is consiously trying to be aggressive?? He seems like wanting to make a statement that he is the right bloke to be opening the innings esp with the likes of MSD in the team.
Thanks Prem. I was just wondering about his speed since you mentioned that ball was dying on SRT. Is SRT back with this timing, footwork etc. ? I don't see anyone of you mention that.
Shekhar: not really *back*. He's hit some stunners, but he's mistimed a few hits too. Thing is, too early to know if that is a factor of his long layoff, or of this pitch. It isn't your regular batting beauty, too many deliveries dying too soon. I get the feeling he is hitting early, a lot of the time.
Prem, as Dravid mentioned, it would be interesting to see the usage of Powerplay rule in this game.. what say? If sachin and viru continue this way, I dont foresee powerplay from over # 11..
abhay: middle and leg line, a touch back of length, SRT was forward already -- so he kind of waited, extended his foot just a bit more, took it on the rise, and hit with the swivel of back, arms extended into the shot. Is why I said back and elbow are not troubling him -- when he has back pain, he never plays that shot
Isnt Vass awesome?? I mean i think he is easily the most under-rated bowler going around. Have a look at his record - speaks volumes for a guy who has bowled half his life on such dead tracks.
Raju: good point. I wonder when the power play will be. So far the trend has been to take it asap. With Murali around, Attapattu has a choice .. don't you think ?
sehwag fails again, he is in serious risk of being dropped for a few ODis if this goes on. C thinks like me i guess good choice IP next.excellent tactics, hope it works. left right combo on to spice it. SRT will guide IP
Prem to be frank thats the reason I asked u about his stance while hitting the ball, he had stopped playing those shots earlier. Good that he is back. Meanwhile Sehwag goes yet again in his 20s, he would the guy with max score in his 20s :-)
Sehwag needs to be dropped pronto; SG might fancy his chances back to the team in openers role. Or may be they should try out GG in the next match. VS needs handle on this.
right archer my def of pinch hitter and blind slogger are diff. i look at a PH as a guy who is not in a regular at that spot and sent in to score quickly while playing reasonably proper cricketing shots
Here is a batsman who has come out of injury and a long layoff, he is still batting. The one who is supposed to be in form is back, really ir-responsible batting as usual.
What is the logic behind sending IKP, Do they think of him as an allrounder ?
archer: You got it right, looks like IP has been told to bat, not slog. Good -- means they are taking his batting seriously, and that could be a huge bonus for the side, if the lad actually puts his hand up and delivers
Prem, whats your take on IP as a pinch-hitter? I quite like the fact that there is some thinking happening in the dressing room. I think India had really become stale in the past year esp when it came to ODI - same batting order, same set of players, same stratergy - so nice to see something different being tried out.
If they had to send a pinch-hitter, why not Agarkar, who has a great record against the Lankans? I get the sneaking feeling that IP will not be throwing his bat around....its well known that the management is hoping IP turns into the genuine allrounder that India has been missing....are they planning to give him extended bats in the middle order?
I think they should have promoted Yuvraj up the order. Yuvraj struggless against spinners and I doubt he can hit out against Murali in the middle overs. He is more at ease against pace bowlers.
harsha: Judging by the way he is playing, what I imagine is the team is aware it is weak in the middle -- by sending out someone who can hold his end up, especially since Sachin is around to take care of brisk scoring, they are probably looking to strengthen their middle by lengthening it -- now RD effectively becomes 4, YS 5, and Dhoni is all the way down at 7, which has a better feel to it. Interesting theory, if that is how they are thinking. And the odd blow like that, from IP, doesn't hurt either
reason i prefer IP or Jp at this spot aheaad of AA and MS is that these guys have better defensive technique and temperament against guys like vaas.reemember to score runs quickly also one needs to be at the crease and not out. AA and MS are good for the last 10-15 even 20 overs
I know I Was just looking at the batting order and was jittered to that realize that if dravid and yuvi goes and then we dont have any names(!!) to count on...and as far as Dhoni is concerned you cant rely on him. He is more of 2/10 match wonders...more like sehwag who is 4/10 match wonder.
Anyways, lets see how the match goes...too much in store before any comments can be passed.
Raju: Right. In any case, whatever the thinking was, it does indicate they think Irfan can bat. I hope that translates into lots of net time, and the team pushing him for more runs -- is brilliant if he realizes his potential with the bat as well.
The problem for SL reallly is, that SRT has settled down. He starts nudging those to third man, it generally indicates he has his eye set on a big one, and more often that not that's trouble
Superb. Same as the last time, only hit a bit more at an angle, over wide midwicket instead of long on. But the same stroke -- full extension of arms into it, late swivel with the hip to take it over the field... good batting.
Veeru's current ODI and Test form, and our relatively weak middle-order makes a good case for restoring the successful Sachin-Sourav (if and when he returns) opening combo, and dropping Veeru to the middle-order. He might then play balls on their merit as he does in test matches. This would also give some steady pace to the middle order with Dravid and Kaif steering a steady course, followed by Yuvraj/Veeru/Dhoni to do some mega-pounding. Wishful thinking??
Most of the teams can bat deep (upto no 9 or 10). India has never been there. If IP delivers consistently with the bat, India will come on par with the rest of the teams.
nishrark thats a logical thing to do unless GC wanna play politics. Veeru should have been sent down cpl of series back itself. He hasnt been effective and we broke one of the best ODI opening partnership for him.
guys...please help me....those of you who are watching the match on SS....SS aint opening in my brwoser......please tell me the email is where i should send my login to get thye link for the match.....and the subject line is "cricket" ??
Prem, my initial thought on GG's inclusion was that he was insurance in case SRT breaks down...but now it looks like he may actually have been picked as cover for Veeru's inability to make big ones in one dayers...what do you think? And damn, my connection continues to be bad...
Question...now that Murali Karthik will be brought in as SS, who will he replace? I guess VR is the only candidate (apart from RD:)) coz everyone else bowls (or keeps)...so, is VR a great fielder? MK is not a bad fielder for an Indian spinner...but will we lose a bit on the field? Can we quantify it in runs? Is MK a net-gain (compared to say a Sehwag doing his bowling quota) SS then?
Sending VS down the order will never happen. GC and RD have guts to send IP top the order..i mean they have this much to experiment..playing with Sehwag's EGO ..I dont think they can..... Anyways...GOD please be with us..SRT playing good so far..
abhay, yes most of the teams do have good bats coming at no 9. with the supersub coming in, some of them have no 10 as well. I think with 20 overs of field restrictions, you will need more batsmen to take advantage.
losing now, good to be back; I tell you with this cricket series and World Series going on at same time my law studies are taking a hit. But, I've got my priorities straight-- cricket first! After all, who wants a lawyer that doesn't know their cricket :)
Prabu, Dont call it be hogging the strike, when others hog they actually sit their at one end of the pitch without scoring..but when sachin does he actually make some runs..
Prem, got the message. Actually, I was part of the group when you made the change. But since this is a blog with lots of traffic, I am sure your concerns will be addressed by google promptly.
the rains causing havoc here, i wonder if the subway will work fine tomorrow, hoping for a day off from college lets see, meanwhile cricket at it's entertaining best.
sahir, with so many lawsuits these days between BCCI, broadcasters and cricket clubs, you might even become a pioneer in the specialised field of 'Cricket Law'
Sahir : Tum bade hoke bahut bade admi banoge. Priorities samajhte ho! I watched the IND-PAK B'lore WC Qtr final and walked into my ECON final paper while doing MS. Had not slept all night. Are you feeding OSWALT the right chicken soup?
SRT/RD are the only players who can play Murali well. Rao has shown promise last time India played SL. It is a good time for the team to know how to play Murali. Will help in the WorldCup (India and SL are in the same group)
Does SRT has that big wrap on elbow?? Guys watching hows he going on follow through b'coz just came in and saw he has allready played couple of shots that he left in dressing room for while.

Dust kicking off the track? India, judging by early evidence, lucky with its choice of supersub.

abhay: they prolly didn't send Dhoni because the middle and lower middle is looking rather weak as is.
By
Prem Panicker, at 00:11
very defensive SL - no slip in place.
By
Yacrik, at 00:12
If they had to send a pinch-hitter, why not Agarkar, who has a great record against the Lankans? I get the sneaking feeling that IP will not be throwing his bat around....its well known that the management is hoping IP turns into the genuine allrounder that India has been missing....are they planning to give him extended bats in the middle order?
By
The Straighter Neo, at 00:12
I think they should have promoted Yuvraj up the order. Yuvraj struggless against spinners and I doubt he can hit out against Murali in the middle overs. He is more at ease against pace bowlers.
By
CoolGuy'OC, at 00:12
Prem, when Irfan opened in Challenger, it did ring a bell... I guess it is a Chappel ploy rather the captain's..
By
Raju, at 00:13
harsha: Judging by the way he is playing, what I imagine is the team is aware it is weak in the middle -- by sending out someone who can hold his end up, especially since Sachin is around to take care of brisk scoring, they are probably looking to strengthen their middle by lengthening it -- now RD effectively becomes 4, YS 5, and Dhoni is all the way down at 7, which has a better feel to it. Interesting theory, if that is how they are thinking. And the odd blow like that, from IP, doesn't hurt either
By
Prem Panicker, at 00:13
hope they play vaas and murli sensibly
By
Ashvin Iyengar, at 00:13
reason i prefer IP or Jp at this spot aheaad of AA and MS is that these guys have better defensive technique and temperament against guys like vaas.reemember to score runs quickly also one needs to be at the crease and not out. AA and MS are good for the last 10-15 even 20 overs
By
Avinash, at 00:13
coolguy: Are you pitching in for Yuvraj to be opener ?;-)
Hmm suudenly there is a competition for opener spot.
By
Shekhar Kale, at 00:14
IP as pinch hitter is a master stroke if you ask me. He can play strokes to make use of the fielding restrictions without the risk of Yuvraj
By
Yacrik, at 00:14
looks like archer beat me to my comments on IP...
By
The Straighter Neo, at 00:14
IP hits a six off vaas
By
J, at 00:14
wow ip hits vaas for a six!!
By
Ashvin Iyengar, at 00:14
master stroke ! and he heard me... there comes the 6 off Vaas
By
Yacrik, at 00:14
I know I Was just looking at the batting order and was jittered to that realize that if dravid and yuvi goes and then we dont have any names(!!) to count on...and as far as Dhoni is concerned you cant rely on him. He is more of 2/10 match wonders...more like sehwag who is 4/10 match wonder.
Anyways, lets see how the match goes...too much in store before any comments can be passed.
By
Medium_Fast_LegSpin, at 00:14
Raju: Right. In any case, whatever the thinking was, it does indicate they think Irfan can bat. I hope that translates into lots of net time, and the team pushing him for more runs -- is brilliant if he realizes his potential with the bat as well.
By
Prem Panicker, at 00:14
I don't really think IP is just being looked at as a pinch hitter. I think he is the real deal.
By
Sidhant, at 00:15
Lankan should aim at rivcage of IP. He isnt too comfortable against pace as pakis have shown in past.
By
Vick, at 00:15
The problem for SL reallly is, that SRT has settled down. He starts nudging those to third man, it generally indicates he has his eye set on a big one, and more often that not that's trouble
By
Prem Panicker, at 00:16
Willow's list of Indian players said:
Irfan Pathan - Bat / Bowl
Ajit Agarkar - Bowl
This was significant.
By
nilcritz, at 00:16
I have seen that if SRT wants to stay, he usually sees him off successfully. That is the diff between SRT and VS.
By
siddhu, at 00:16
What score do we expect on this pitch ? DO we expect it to slow down in 2nd innings ?
By
Shekhar Kale, at 00:16
For those watching on Willow, is the video alright? I seem to be having trouble - keeps stopping and buffering every few seconds
By
Venkat, at 00:16
tendulkat after all this time still says it is a privilege to play for India!! Wish Sehwag and others felt the same!!
By
Ashvin Iyengar, at 00:16
vick: they dont have the pace. Plus, the wicket, you wont get it that high unless you pitch it on your own toes
By
Prem Panicker, at 00:16
RD + GC seems to be the best thing to have happened to the world of cricket!
By
Yacrik, at 00:16
venkat: no issues on my connection yet, fingers crossed
By
Prem Panicker, at 00:17
Prem, agree with your thoughts. Just hope IP somes good with his batting. He will solve so many problems esp wrt the balance of the side.
By
Harsha, at 00:17
I just remembered the role of Shohaib malik in pak. Are v going to see that effect from pathan?
By
Krishna, at 00:18
Prem: How do you type with your fingers crossed ? :-)
I am sorry .. I just couldn't resist that.
By
Shekhar Kale, at 00:19
connection is fine; quality is slightly off or my screen needs a bath
By
Yacrik, at 00:19
Prem,
I remember one guy who used to do that - pitch at his toes - Deb Mohanty!
Prabu
By
Prabu, at 00:19
Superb. Same as the last time, only hit a bit more at an angle, over wide midwicket instead of long on. But the same stroke -- full extension of arms into it, late swivel with the hip to take it over the field... good batting.
By
Prem Panicker, at 00:19
Veeru's current ODI and Test form, and our relatively weak middle-order makes a good case for restoring the successful Sachin-Sourav (if and when he returns) opening combo, and dropping Veeru to the middle-order. He might then play balls on their merit as he does in test matches. This would also give some steady pace to the middle order with Dravid and Kaif steering a steady course, followed by Yuvraj/Veeru/Dhoni to do some mega-pounding. Wishful thinking??
By
Nishark, at 00:19
sportingstreams.com doesnt seem to work ...
By
Geoffrey George, at 00:20
yeah looks like a slow wicket.
By
Vick, at 00:20
Prem, I think Atapattu would go for Powerplay 2 from next over.. Sehwag's wicket savedhim a headache..
By
Raju, at 00:20
Is SRT playing like in 2003 WC or pre-2002?
By
Prabu, at 00:20
Most of the teams can bat deep (upto no 9 or 10). India has never been there. If IP delivers consistently with the bat, India will come on par with the rest of the teams.
By
siddhu, at 00:20
SRT looking for 100 here? outside the off and defend when no slip in place!
By
Yacrik, at 00:20
Is powerplay 2 on ?
By
Shekhar Kale, at 00:22
2 more overs from Vass and Ind is safe and home;
By
Yacrik, at 00:22
Is the second power play anyon? Cricinfo does not say anything on this.
By
siddhu, at 00:23
ashvin: i sent an email and im too.
By
losing now, at 00:23
nishrark thats a logical thing to do unless GC wanna play politics. Veeru should have been sent down cpl of series back itself. He hasnt been effective and we broke one of the best ODI opening partnership for him.
By
Vick, at 00:23
guys...please help me....those of you who are watching the match on SS....SS aint opening in my brwoser......please tell me the email is where i should send my login to get thye link for the match.....and the subject line is "cricket" ??
By
Dark Nights, at 00:23
Sidhu u said most of the teams can bat deep (upto no 9 or 10) doest that mean almost the full team can bat :-P
why to u bat deep down the order :-)
By
Medium_Fast_LegSpin, at 00:23
who is playing Vaas this over? SRT or IP
By
Prabu, at 00:23
How about from the guys who are watching ?
By
Shekhar Kale, at 00:23
dark nights, can u IM me on ashiyen@yahoo.com?
By
Ashvin Iyengar, at 00:24
yacrik, u r forgetting Murali. He is lethal and more so with India having quite a few youngsters.
By
siddhu, at 00:24
Sachin was infact LBW there, repreive by the umpire
By
J, at 00:24
Prem, my initial thought on GG's inclusion was that he was insurance in case SRT breaks down...but now it looks like he may actually have been picked as cover for Veeru's inability to make big ones in one dayers...what do you think?
And damn, my connection continues to be bad...
By
Venkat, at 00:25
ashvin iyengar - what the hell are you doing here?
By
J, at 00:25
Question...now that Murali Karthik will be brought in as SS, who will he replace? I guess VR is the only candidate (apart from RD:)) coz everyone else bowls (or keeps)...so, is VR a great fielder? MK is not a bad fielder for an Indian spinner...but will we lose a bit on the field? Can we quantify it in runs? Is MK a net-gain (compared to say a Sehwag doing his bowling quota) SS then?
By
The Straighter Neo, at 00:25
Sending VS down the order will never happen. GC and RD have guts to send IP top the order..i mean they have this much to experiment..playing with Sehwag's EGO ..I dont think they can.....
Anyways...GOD please be with us..SRT playing good so far..
By
Medium_Fast_LegSpin, at 00:26
dark nights,
sportingstreams website is down
By
Sahir, at 00:26
Siddhu
Are you siddhu from Troy?
By
Prabu, at 00:26
SRT playing at boths ends according to cricinfo. I think thats the best rule for India.
By
Vick, at 00:26
tell me, why did they drop SRT for 5 months? he needed just one hand
By
Yacrik, at 00:26
j: who was the ump..Hariharan or the other guy
By
losing now, at 00:26
lbw - hit out side the line
By
Yacrik, at 00:28
Dark nights you can watch it on sgstream but it will cost you $10
By
CoolGuy'OC, at 00:28
abhay, yes most of the teams do have good bats coming at no 9. with the supersub coming in, some of them have no 10 as well. I think with 20 overs of field restrictions, you will need more batsmen to take advantage.
By
siddhu, at 00:28
neo thats easy. Rao will be replaced.
By
Vick, at 00:28
it's not our as per the rule
By
Yacrik, at 00:28
Oye Sahir..welcome back ;-)
By
losing now, at 00:28
hariharan offcourse
By
J, at 00:28
Another, innings like this from Sehwag and the greatest opening pair ever in the history of all oDis will be back in business.
By
Nearly Man, at 00:29
Actually the only two guys that can't bowl in this team are RD and MD ... maybe RD will be replaced by MK!! j/k
By
Prabu, at 00:29
any options other than SS guys? it seems to be down forever.
By
Vick, at 00:30
is the first power play ON
By
losing now, at 00:30
Prem, are you sure it isnt a problem with some setting of yours? I had this problem one day but it got sorted out by itself.
By
Toney, at 00:30
chuckitharan ON
By
losing now, at 00:31
anyone can you please tell if the power play is on?
By
siddhu, at 00:31
Prabhu, no.
By
siddhu, at 00:32
toney bhai..yeh SS to bahut unreliable hai bhai.. aap kya advise diye
By
losing now, at 00:32
Great decision by Atapattu to bring Murali on....IP is going to have problems...
By
The Straighter Neo, at 00:32
Sachin has hogged the strike for a while now. Welcome change .... usually the other guy always hogs the strike when Sachin plays well
By
Prabu, at 00:33
losing now, seems too much of a coincidence after the discussions in the earlier thread, anyhow...
By
Toney, at 00:33
losing now,
good to be back; I tell you with this cricket series and World Series going on at same time my law studies are taking a hit. But, I've got my priorities straight-- cricket first! After all, who wants a lawyer that doesn't know their cricket :)
By
Sahir, at 00:34
toney: so are you watching..
By
losing now, at 00:34
Prabu, Dont call it be hogging the strike, when others hog they actually sit their at one end of the pitch without scoring..but when sachin does he actually make some runs..
By
Medium_Fast_LegSpin, at 00:35
Why the hell, Murlitharan bowls so well against indians...he is usally bowls very tight line and lenght against us....and piks wikets as well...
By
Medium_Fast_LegSpin, at 00:36
losing now,
This is the first time SS is down so long; been a customer for a while; hey it's still a bargain
By
Sahir, at 00:36
Prem, got the message. Actually, I was part of the group when you made the change. But since this is a blog with lots of traffic, I am sure your concerns will be addressed by google promptly.
By
Toney, at 00:36
the rains causing havoc here, i wonder if the subway will work fine tomorrow, hoping for a day off from college lets see, meanwhile cricket at it's entertaining best.
By
Ruchi Shah, at 00:36
sahir, with so many lawsuits these days between BCCI, broadcasters and cricket clubs, you might even become a pioneer in the specialised field of 'Cricket Law'
By
Nishark, at 00:36
no, losing now, not watching
By
Toney, at 00:36
Abhay
don't get me wrong...I am happy that SRT is "hogging" it
BTW, hopw many of uu think it is unfair for Willow to charge more for US and Canadian customers??!!
By
Prabu, at 00:36
Sahir : Tum bade hoke bahut bade admi banoge. Priorities samajhte ho!
I watched the IND-PAK B'lore WC Qtr final and walked into my ECON final paper while doing MS. Had not slept all night. Are you feeding OSWALT the right chicken soup?
By
losing now, at 00:37
SRT/RD are the only players who can play Murali well. Rao has shown promise last time India played SL. It is a good time for the team to know how to play Murali. Will help in the WorldCup (India and SL are in the same group)
By
siddhu, at 00:38
Dang, I can't believe after all this time Sachin is scoring runs, and I can;t watch! C'mon SS!
By
Sahir, at 00:38
Sahir...I am not sure if the site is down or not...sometimes it opens and sometimes it says it is down but the stream definitely is down.
By
CoolGuy'OC, at 00:38
