Wrong address

Shoaib Akthar wants India to put politics aside, and provide more aid to the quake victims of Pakistan.
I think India should step forward more bravely. It's not easy for India to just come and help us out because there are still a few issues to sort out, but I think we just put it aside.

Nicely put, Shoaib -- now could you give President Musharraf a call, please? As it happens, just last Friday, I was editing, for India Abroad, a copy filed by my colleague Sheela Bhatt from New Delhi; a story that had me (I told you it's a great day for being incensed) incensed.
Not a single Indian, except separatist Kashmiri leader Yasin Malik, has been granted a visa to visit PoK. We are ready with assistance, it is up to Pakistan whether to accept it or not'

That is from the MEA.
"If Pakistan can let us know the most affected areas where relief supplies, and teams of medical personnel are required, they could be mobilized and sent across the border. Pakistan however is yet to respond to the offer"

That is foreign secretary Shyam Saran, the MEA's number two man after Natwar Singh.
President Pervez Musharraf has made no secret of his feelings -- on the day of the quake, he indicated that he was reluctant to accept India's help because of 'sensitivities'.

As of date, India has sent one aircraft and two trainloads of relief supplies, besides pledging $25 million to the UN fund to help Pakistan.

Incidentally, since Indian doctors were not allowed into PoK, India offered to set up camps along the LoC, where patients from PoK could be brought for treatment. Again, Pakistan is yet to respond.
As you say, Shoaib -- the quake is bigger than all of us; we should just put aside these 'sensitivities' Musharraf is so concerned about, no?

  • Heres an article from the News (pakistan)

    Contract keeps Shoaib away

as Pak team visits quake victims

    From our correspondent

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s fast bowler Shoaib Akhtar was conspicuous by his absence when members of the Pakistan team visited two hospitals in the twin cities on Sunday to meet the injured earthquake victims undergoing treatment.

The word was that Shoaib had declined to accompany the other members to Islamabad as part of a telethon organised by the Pakistan Television (PTV) to raise funds for the earthquake victims as he is under contract to a sports management company and can’t appear on television without their consent and any payments.

However, the enigmatic bowler showed he was as touched as everyone else by the plight of the earthquake victims when his agent announced that he would hand over something like $7500 which he had managed to raise in Australia with the help of Red Cross.

"He has also given his consent to donating his match fees for the first Test in Multan and part of it for the next one-year to captain Inzamam-ul-Haq for the quake victims," a source said.

His agent, when contacted, said Shoaib couldn’t visit the hospitals since he was not feeling well but the grapevine had it that apart from contractual obligations he also wanted the PTV to pay him an appearance fees which he had pledged to donate to the quake victims.

"The fact of the matter is that some players were upset earlier this year when PTV held a grand programme to celebrate their performance in India and earned some nine crore rupees from it with neither the players nor the performances getting anything," a source said.

The Pakistani players - led by Inzamam - visited the General Hospital in Rawalpindi and then went to the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) to see the injured children. The condition of some of these infants as young as two or three months moved some of the players to tears.

  • I was watching FOX News, 'terrorism expert' from Pak, he works for NewsWeek, don't remember his name exactly, ...he was indicating bomb explosions in Delhi were because India changed it's stance on Iran issue....some disgruntled muslims did this act.

Point India do not have PR people in US. Inspite of help for EQ victims, it does not get any mention. Pak PR guys are agressive, they tell lies in a convincing ways.

You made the cardinal sin of journalism - taking a bag of hot air seriously.

    By Blogger hjrsingh, at 14:36

  • TC, whether you like it or not, the blasts were the donation that were given to India for their soft gesture ..
The enormity of explosion donse't need a Intellegnece expert to paint a high level picture .

By Blogger Pankaj Tripathi, at 14:37

  • Dude, we just got busted in Delhi by a bunch of terrorists from Pak. Would Shoaib be kind enough to say something about it or is it too "sensitive"?

  • At least 2 other players from our squad have donated handsomely from their own private funds to earth quake related causes - but they unlike Shoaib "i love the limelight" Akhtar - requested for their identities and the amount of their aids to be kept confidential.

I'm really losing it with Shoaib now, really. I don't wish to spoil my fast saying how I really feel about him - but I won't make secret of at least this this much: I'd like him to shut up. And mind his own buisness. Leave the aid work to those in charge, and concentrate on your bowling, please.

On a personal level, I'd like to think of it in this way: I don't know how Mr.Manmohan would have reacted to receiving aid from us if the roles had been reversed, would India have accepted our helicopters flying around in their air space? I don't know.

As far as I'm aware President Mushy's been on record saying we're willing to accept any kind of aid from India apart from the presence of their military on our soil - which is a fair enough call. I can't see India having done any different.

    By Blogger Zainub, at 04:46

  • good points zainub but have you considered this..the two govts are agreeing to open up loc as far as i know to help the quake victims..if we are doing that what is the issue of opening the sky above?? and, really for lack of having organized relief organizations that can do it all in our part of the world, we are dependant on the army for logistics and overall mgmt..the reliance on army for natural calamity is however true in all parts of the world..

  • Help me Dude, I think I'm lost..... I was searching for Elvis and somehow ended up in your blog, but you know I'm sure I saw him in a car lot yesterday, which is really strange because the last time I saw him was in the supermarket. No honest really, he was right there in front of me, next to the steaks singing "Love me Tender". He said to me (his lip was only slightly curled) "Boy, you need to get yourself a San Diego cosmetic surgery doctor ,to fit into those blue suede shoes of yours. But Elvis said in the Ghetto nobody can afford a San Diego plastic surgery doctor. Dude I'm All Shook Up said Elvis. I think I'll have me another cheeseburger. Then I'm gonna go round and see Michael Jackson and we're gonna watch a waaaay cool make-over show featuring some Tijuana dentists on the TV in the back of my Hummer. And then he just walked out of the supermarket singing. . . "You give me love and consolation,
You give me strength to carry on " Strange day or what? :-)
