11-20 over phase

Dravid's dismissal was an eye-opener -- his eyes, that is; it seemed for a moment there as though he hadn't mentally settled down to face the ball. Very unusual to see his feet go in one line and his bat in another. Gambhir, rotated in for MK, had the chance to make a statement -- or underline the one he had made earlier -- but that flash wasn't what he needed there.
This phase has been fascinating -- partly for Nel's very peculiar approach stride, which is almost like a kid playing hopscotch; partly for the dead calm with which Pathan is batting; partly for the way Yuvraj seems to be leading a charmed life -- each time they pull away a slip, the edge goes there.
In between all those scares, though, the two settling down to a decent partnership; and slowly, despite the bowling staying tight, and the fielding being top-notch, the singles have begun to come; Pathan in particular exemplary in the way he taps the ball into gaps with his eye on that quick single.
The factor that could have long term impact is the pitch -- the bounce is easing off, the seam movement is less exaggerated, and what remains is the tendency to bounce low on occasion. Not clear whether this will get worse -- but even as is, there is sufficient uneven bounce to put a little bit of doubt in batsman's minds. You might need to revise the 'asking score' on this track -- to around the 240 mark, which should be at the least competitive.
An interesting question is when Smith will opt for his fifth bowler -- use him now and ease a bit of the pressure, or use him later and run the risk of running into say a settled Dhoni/IP/Yuvraj?

  • will the Indian management have the guts to dump Sehwag, in light of his continuous failures?

  • Sehwag should be dumped. Bring in Zaheer in place of Agarkar as well

  • sehwag did well in the SL series..

  • " sehwag did well in the SL series.."

you mean being a cheerleader? Pleaasee.. the guy is in the team MAINLY for his batting

  • IP is proving his batting skills again. He is the 3rd best batsman in the current team. SRT, RD and IP...we can count on.

IP is only allrounder we have.

  • and SRT hasnt done much either since his first 2ODIs.

  • Quite Honestly Sri Lanka had a good rating due to their superlative performances at home.

India swamping them wasn't a big deal. In fact the same team more or less visited SL under Dravid/GC which lost miserably then and were champs back in India. The fact is India now faces truly a class act in SA.

  • I want to tall to the guys who the other day talked about why Kaif should be in the test team

  • Prem or anyone else, why did Pathan came out before Dhoni? Come on, that is ridiculous. Pathan is solid. But I still think Dhoni should have come out before.

I think they were saving him for the 5th bowler...
Dhoni has been untested against qualit bowling and there was no point risking him at that point when they knew IP can play out good bowlers with better technique

  • Sehwag's ODI scores in 2005

    14,2,32,6,48,21,38,5,15,45,12,75,6,21,37,20,38,39,48,19,22,35,1

Just one fifty in 25+ games....Game's up for VS...

  • good shot by IP....look at authority in his strokes...not any edgy drives...

  • cameras are searching for colorful shots....not so lucky....all saris aunties

  • this series will probably be like the pre-1996 ODIs - save wickets till 30th and then double your score
ODIs were more exciting then, at least the bowlers had some chance then....

  • Hopefully GC/RD have their flexible strategies in place - say like they must be into Strategy no. 4 or 5 already for this match itself. The fact is GC will get off because he will now claim that he is still experimenting (when they lose).

You had enough experiments in the SL series - yr first game against SA you put yr best foot forward. Then tinker from there on.

"Windows Media Player cannot play the file. A network firewall might be preventing the Player from opening the file by using the UDP transport protocol. If you typed a URL in the Open URL dialog box, try using a different transport protocol (for example, "http:")."

    Any quick help please

  • PRABU

If Dhoni is untested against quality bowling then why are we raving about his 183 and other exploits against SL. Claiming he is the next best thing to happen.

So whay are we, the same guys who want only the best 11 playing, now making adjustments to accomadate.

Also MK selection is clearly suspect as he hasn't proved his fitness in any domestic league since his recovery from injury. We understood those were the rules used for SG exclusion or was it form. The selectors nor the current management have the guts to make clear statements (something SG had b-lls to do).

Anyway even if form is teh reason there is at least 2-3 passengers on board.

Quite honestly the Indian public get taken for rides because they have bought the tickets in advance - my point being we are just blinded by whatever GC says and believes in. There is clearly something amiss Mr. GC when he maintains double standards. VS is still being persisted - because he is special - come-on give us a break.

I sincerely hope we wake up soon and reliase that praise and accolades should wait till another 12 months have passed for this team.

  • prabu, makes no sense.
they cannot substitute dhoni. And what has pathan proven that dhoni has not proven so pathan can be entrusted. Whether this works or not, dhoni should have been next.
