40 over mark

100 off 93 in a total, at the time, of 177 -- says it all, really. At no time (not even in his 90s, when you could reasonably expect a player who is not a regular to try and play safe for his 100) did the lad seem to be going berserk, yet at no time did his run rate slip. India, noticeably, has managed to keep its run rate above 5 an over throughout, despite the loss of Sehwag and Dhoni early and cheap, and for that, the credit goes entirely to Gambhir, who has given his captain the luxury of playing the more restrained anchor knock at the other end (and ensuring he can stay through the innings, rather than being forced to take risks to up the scoring).
The interesting thing about GG's knock is, more than the assurance behind his boundaries, the fact that he got a fair few of his runs the hard way, between wickets -- 45 dot balls and 43 runs taken between wickets, including 32 singles, five twos and a three is good intelligent cricket. Equally, GG didn't get his runs through milking any one bowler -- Murali, who gave him 11 off 14 balls bowled for a strike rate of 4.71, was actually the least expensive of the guys who bowled to him; everyone else went for over six and that is good, controlled aggression.
His wagonwheel is indicative of the sort of wicket this is, and the nature of his strokeplay -- 41 of his runs came through the covers, against 21 through midwicket, 19 to the region behind point and 18 to the area behind square on the leg (3 to mid off, 1 to mid on).
In the previous game, I thought Raina played the most interesting knock of them all -- no fuss, no muss, no big hitting, just calm assurance and seemingly an unerring instinct in what to do in the situation; he went along at a cracking pace (39 off 30, with just 2 fours; 6 dot balls, 15 singles, 5 twos and two threes); be interesting to see, with more overs to play with, how he goes here.
67 runs in this ten over phase is good going; if you factor in the loss of two wickets, that's really good work. On the other hand, though, India are into the tail if another wicket falls, and that could hamper the push for a score close to 300 -- the onus, now, squarely on Dravid. One positive aspect -- Murali and Vaas, the two best bowlers for Lanka, have just 4 overs between them; that is six overs of less threatening stuff India can look to milk.

  • GG scored a good century....he should be part of team. VS/SRT should come down the order...that gives solidity in the middle order.

Why can't agarkar stay on the wicket for once

  • The kids (VGR and RR) showed inexperience, should have played a bit sensibly. Now it would be tough for the team to reach 280.

  • One the onus is on RD to see India till the end and post a total of about 275~280. More 19 balls left-30 runs is very much possible

  • BCCI makes ton of money...why can't they install Electronic score boards in all stadiums...atleast one's which host intl matches.....it is odd to see...changes names and numbers with sticks...

  • I think VS Should come down, that will help him make up his mind. also the 20 over power play makes up for the need for top four to be agressive(GG,SRT,VS,MD), MK and RD to settle in the middle and then we have the likes of (SR,VR,YS) to finish it up.MD can be used in slog if the top three stayed longer. RD played a real heroic innings, kudos to him and I hope we dont lose this match

  • Looking back to the previous games on this ground, it seems India is like 20~25 short. But now it depends how the youngers like SS n RPS perform with the cherry.
