Ho-hum

Mom, who I spoke to around midnight, laughed when I asked her if she thought play would be possible today. Are you nuts, she goes -- I've been struggling to dry clothes here, these last two days, you think they can dry the ground?
Cricinfo, better informed than mom, says there is no rain and the groundsmen are working hard. Good for them -- maybe we will get a truncated game in. Tell you what, though -- this is already a truncated week, thanks to Thanksgiving; which basically means, do 6 days worth of work in three, and that is a touch hard when you are sleepless. So will leave this thread open -- for those who can't or won't sleep -- and head back to bed for another hour or so. Open thread, meantimes... and if you run short of discussion topics, there is this: After all the speculation about separate captains for Tests and ODIs, the national selectors (revelling, perhaps, in the unwonted freedom afforded by the fact that the BCCI elections are yet to take place) have picked Rahul Dravid to lead India in the Test series against Sri Lanka. An interesting sidelight is the Board President's XI team picked for the warm-up game against the islanders -- if you go by the presumption that such teams are picked with a view to testing out available Test options, this particular squad has some curious inclusions -- and omissions.
Open thread, guys... see you back in an hour and a half.

  • Prem,

With England being in mind, can BP XI include Piyush Chawla also ? Also i dont see any reason trying Sridharan Sriram, who infact failed earlier no of occasions

    By Blogger Ananth, at 03:57

  • they shud aim for a 20-20 match
    if not atleat a 10-10 or even a 5-5

By Blogger idli vade, at 03:58

  • Sridharan Sriram has been playing all sorts of matches for ages now.. india a, south zone, presidents eleven, prime misters eleven, chief ministers elven.... etc
he recently made a pathetic 40 of about 200 balls in duleep

By Blogger idli vade, at 04:00

  • how many overs need to be bowled for the match to be official?

    By Blogger Arunabh, at 04:00

  • anurabh,
20 overs per side is official

    By Blogger Sahir, at 04:06

  • when will sreedharan sriram stop playing for president's eleven?

By Blogger idli vade, at 04:07

  • Even if we don't get an official match in, I would like to see our bowlers get an opportunity to have a go on what is likely to be a juiced up wicket-- inflict a little psychological damage.

    By Blogger Sahir, at 04:08

  • prem, looking at chepauk right now...covers are on, but, no rain...hopefully we will get some cricket and hopefully no frigging DL...

    By Blogger greg2rescue, at 04:09

  • greg2,are you in medrass?

    By Blogger K-Slice, at 04:10

  • Guesses on the Indian team to be announced for the Test matches?

    My two-bit worth
    1. Sehwag
    2. Gambhir
    3. Dravid (c)
    4. Sachin
    5. Venugopal Rao (Laxman missing out!)
    6. Kaif
    7. Yuvraj
    8. Dhoni (Karthik missing out!)
    9. Irfan Pathan
    10. Agarkar
    11. Zaheer (should be welcomed back - RP Singh may just miss out!)
    12. Kumble
    13. Harbhajan
    14. Murali Kartik (or another paceman - Nehra, Sree Santh?)

    What do you guys think?

    By Blogger JAGS, at 04:10

  • Murali Karthik has the potential to become a world class SWIMMER..
    He shud give up spin

By Blogger idli vade, at 04:11

  • Laxam = 1000 * (Kaif+Rao)

By Blogger idli vade, at 04:12

  • gily,
are you in the habit of repetition or is it just that you like reading your own words(akin to liking to hear one's own voice)???

    By Blogger K-Slice, at 04:12

  • prem, my mom says that "if you want something real bad, then, you will have to pray", so here I am like a tribal goon, praying for rain to stop and sun to shine few thousand miles away at 1:00 AM in the friggin night...

    By Blogger greg2rescue, at 04:12

  • whats the update on Chepauk? Anyone out there?

By Blogger sachin agarwal, at 04:12

  • next pdate 3:30 PM.
SAF coah thinks the ground in injury prone

By Blogger Pankaj Tripathi, at 04:12

  • sachin, I am seeing the stadium in willow TV. It is still a bit dark and gloomy, but, no rain now...

    By Blogger greg2rescue, at 04:13

  • Laxman missing out on Tests? No chance. I reckon Gagnguly will be in the squad, but will not play (appeasement strategy for Kolkata ODI).

    By Blogger Sahir, at 04:13

  • no chance of game atleast for 4 hours

By Blogger Pankaj Tripathi, at 04:13

  • chan i doubt we will play 3 spinners ever again reminiscent of raju, kumble and chauhan. also i hope they dont drop RP but then again i think ZAK deserves a chance.

    By Blogger K-Slice, at 04:13

  • 25 K people in stadium :)

By Blogger Pankaj Tripathi, at 04:14

  • what shud the pace attack be like ? i suppose irfan is the only one whose place is assured

    By Blogger GK, at 04:14

  • pankaj, next update is at 15:30 local time, so, why do you reckon there will be no play for next 4 hours...

    By Blogger greg2rescue, at 04:15

  • Pnakaj, where did you read the 'injury prone' stuff?

By Blogger sachin agarwal, at 04:15

  • i was watching their coach's interview on ground abt 15 mins back

By Blogger Pankaj Tripathi, at 04:16

  • yes that was said very clearly

By Blogger Pankaj Tripathi, at 04:17

  • k-slice, zak does not deserve a chance...he has had plenty of chances ...hogged up and shut out prospects of real fast bowlers...

    By Blogger greg2rescue, at 04:17

  • Proteas are scared of losing !!!!!!

By Blogger Ravi Krishnan, at 04:17

  • They are still expecting downpour or two ..One downpour can undo the game...

By Blogger Pankaj Tripathi, at 04:18

  • ravi, genuine concern I guess...

    By Blogger greg2rescue, at 04:18

  • My guess on the Test playing XI:
    1. Gambhir
    2. Sehwag
    3. Dravid*
    4. Tendulkar
    5. Laxman
    6. Yuvraj
    7. +Dhoni
    8. Pathan
    9. Agarkar
    10. Harbhajan
    11. Kumble

Additional members of squad: Zaheer, Ganguly, +Kaarthick, Kaif

    By Blogger Sahir, at 04:19

  • how can it be genuine when even the cover haven't been removed & the ground is not yet handed over to the umpires !!!

By Blogger Ravi Krishnan, at 04:20

  • greg2,
i guess you are right but i think they will reinstate him. let him play for one series. see him getting bajaoed and then see him off all the way to pune where he can run zaks. incidentally one of theeeeee shittttiiiiieeeest restaurants in town!

    By Blogger K-Slice, at 04:20

  • Ravi .. the oundries are soaking wet.. the covers were in the middle .. Arther said, he dosent want to risk his players

By Blogger Pankaj Tripathi, at 04:21

  • sahir spot on, but, 6.Yuvraj is not even a distinct possibility...we all know how pathetic he is against quality spin. I think it will be 6.Ganguly because, if he is selected in the team, then, he will play. RD is too nice a guy to rub his ex-captain the wrong way...

    By Blogger greg2rescue, at 04:21

  • sahir,
if SG is in the team i feel he will get to play. maybe at the expense of GG or even YS. unfortunate but hey we dont want the calcutta crowd going ape shit do we? i really think this a ploy by jaggu bhai to ensure he gets back. bongs are in general a very cultured kind of people and definitely would see india win without SG rather than see it lose with him.
oh well just my two bits about letting him play out of fear of a revolt in cal.

    By Blogger K-Slice, at 04:23

  • Why are we Indians so helpless ? If someone in US would have done akin to this - alloting a game to place in its rainy-season - the person would lose his job the very next day, unless he has an impeccable explaination. And, we are can do nothing against Jagmohan Dalmiya alloting the match to Chennai, in a rainy season ?!

By Blogger sachin agarwal, at 04:23

  • greg, spot on. sad, but spot on.

    By Blogger GK, at 04:23

  • oh ok, if itz that bad, then itz a prob for our players too....

if SG is in the 14/15, he'll surely play

By Blogger Ravi Krishnan, at 04:24

  • my guess is GC has figured out zak for what he is. all this "spearhead" tag does not cut it with him. he goes by pure performances with stress on performance under pressure. We all know Zak sucks big time in this area...My guess is Zak may be selected in the team (because he is Mr.More's favorite) and may not play at all..

    By Blogger greg2rescue, at 04:25

  • sachin, because bcci is not a public body/company, not accountable to anyone, thatz y !!!!

By Blogger Ravi Krishnan, at 04:26

  • sachin
yeah ... in fact last november the last day of the australia test was rained off, the november before india-nz game was rained off all in chennai

    By Blogger GK, at 04:26

  • Prem...what curiosus omissions in the BP XI? VRV ? Mishra instead of Chawla is ok since I always thought our test match selections are based on domestic performance and experience (unless someone execels in ODIs...which Chawla hasn't).

I don't see any other exclusions. Although as others here pointed out, Sriram doesn't look like a prospect anymore so his inclusion could have been avoided. Probably Raina given a go in his place?

I think this BP XI is made solely with test prospects in mind.

    By Blogger worma, at 04:26

  • pankaj,
if the umpires say game on then whether micky like sit or not his players have to come out to play or act like pussies and forfeit the game. either way he isnt the lord of chepauk to decide he doesnt want his players to play. are the conditions not equally dangerous for the indians as well? havent heard chappel come out and say "oh playing here might cause our players to sprain their bollocks or soil thei arses from sliding around" have you??
    what a crook micky is!

    By Blogger K-Slice, at 04:26

  • friggin dark clouds over chepauk again...

    By Blogger greg2rescue, at 04:26

  • There is no accountability in India ! No wonder we take out all our need-for-accountibility urge on likes of Sania Mirza, and Rahul Dravid.

By Blogger sachin agarwal, at 04:27

  • ravi
whatever campaign rahul mehra is carrying out against the bcci i hope he is raising this point too

    By Blogger GK, at 04:27

  • worma, BP X1 could have also accomodated players who need a bit of practice... I think that is what prem meant...not sure though...

    By Blogger greg2rescue, at 04:27

  • umpires might cancel game earlier than thought..saw the ground on the telly...wet wet wet..doesnt look like play today folks..go get some snoozies...

RD's been appointed captain?..yaaay..:p..was pretty impressed with him back when they were in pakistan...who'd have the stones to call back Tendulkar on 194..just cos he was batting too slowly for the teams liking..lol..ppl talk about having guts and all..but seriously..THAT took alot of stones...imagine what people would have done if we'd lost that match..:D..taa...hope theres play today..but doest look likely..maybe a 20-20 match??

    By Blogger TheChowmeinWarrior, at 04:29

  • greg: like who? Kumble? Kaif, Yuv? I think Kumble is playing Ranji..and probably Kaif, Yuv are going to get some rest after ODIs...and also their test prospect is no more under scrutiny?

    By Blogger worma, at 04:29

  • It is just ridiculous to see Afridi bowling in the rough he created!
What on earth is the match referee doing? Ban him for the next match but he can still bowl in this match.
Can anyone explain what rule is this?
This can set a bad precedent and others can easily take advantage of such non-sensical decisions.

    By Blogger siddhu, at 04:29

  • greg
where r u getting these updates on chennai weather from ?

    By Blogger GK, at 04:29

  • kia website says there is 0.0 mm of rain right now!!
    lets keep our fingers crossed!

    By Blogger K-Slice, at 04:29

  • Let's look at the pace attack we have:

    1. Irfan
    2. Agarkar
    3. Zaheer
    4. Balaji
    5. Sree Santh
    6. RP Singh
    7. Nehra

Do you think any other will be considered?

Of these 3 or 4 (depending on we take a 3rd spinner or 4th middle order batsman) - Irfan, Agarkar, Zaheer and RP Singh

Let's look at the middle order choices after Dravid and Sachin:

    1. Laxman
    2. Ganguly
    3. Kaif
    4. Yuvraj
    5. Venugopal Rao
    6. Jadhav
    7. Raina

My comments - the last two still have to be given more chance in ODIs and other 1st class matches against visiting teams to become eligible for Test cricket.

Ganguly - despite his century against Zimbabwe may not get in the team because of the events after that and Dravid needs to be free from his overbearing presence!

So the remaining four would get in the team.

Let's look at the wicket-keepers we have:

    1. Karthik
    2. Dhoni
    3. Parthiv
    4. Ratra - the youngest wicket keeper in history to score a century and the first one abroad for India!

My thoughts - Dhoni would be tried - he played patiently in ODIs when needed!

    Let's look at spinners
    1. Kumble
    2. Harbhajan
    3. Murali Kartik
    4. ???

My thoughts - the 2nd ODI against South Africa - gave Kartik a chance to get included as the 3rd spinner! Hope Kumble is fit still!

Gambhir and Sehwag are obviously selected. Should be have another opener handy instead of 4th middle order batsman - just in case!

    By Blogger JAGS, at 04:30

  • sachin, it is not only JDs fault...the whole friggin board is full of crack heads who do not understand the basics of organizing...I hope the SL test is also not washed out...

    By Blogger greg2rescue, at 04:30

  • Test XV

    V Sehwag
    G Gambhir
    R Dravid
    S Tendulkar
    VVS Laxman
    Y Singh
    D Kaarthick
    I Pathan
    H Singh
    A Kumble
    M Kartik
    Z Khan
    A Agarkar
    V Rao
    M Kaif

    By Blogger galli_cricket, at 04:30

  • gk, I am looking at the stadium in my laptop on willow TV...

    By Blogger greg2rescue, at 04:31

  • I have lost my video as of now .. but the lat i had were, it was gettign darker as greg said :)

By Blogger Pankaj Tripathi, at 04:32

  • From BP IX it looks like Laxman and Ganguly are surely in the team. Otherwise they could have asked both of them to play and prove their worth.
Test IX will not be much different from the one that went to Zimbabwe.

    By Blogger siddhu, at 04:32

  • worma, yeah...I bet kumble, VVS, ZK could all use some match practice...anyway, I guess you are right...they may not risk playing team members in the warm-up match...

    By Blogger greg2rescue, at 04:33

  • V Sehwag
    G Gambhir
    R Dravid
    S Tendulkar
    VVS Laxman
    Y Singh
    M Dhoni
    I Pathan
    H Singh
    A Kumble
    L Balaji
    A Agarkar
    V Rao

By Blogger idli vade, at 04:33

  • siddhu
why the hell wud anyone even consider the possibility of laxman not being in the team ?

    By Blogger GK, at 04:34

  • Rain started again :(

    By Blogger Rishi, at 04:35

  • sgbw
instead if yuvi and rao id have ganguly and kaif

    By Blogger GK, at 04:35

  • greg: yes and also that they are all playing Ranji at the same time (I think). Include Balaji also in that list, as I am sure Balaji and ZK would be there in the test XV

    By Blogger worma, at 04:35

  • to hell with this waiting with red eyes...I am going to sleep...adios folks...happy blogging...

    By Blogger greg2rescue, at 04:36

  • guys it has been pouring down on the stadium in the last 5-10 mins, looks to be abating as the clouds move past. in fact the rain's pretty much gone. and the crowd cheers wildly as the rain stops. hilarious.
but fact is the groundstaff's work all through the day has been undone. and without some serious sunlight there is no way the outfield will be fit to play.
i think at best we'll get a 20-20 game, which will be amazing.

By Blogger Dhruv Deepak, at 04:36

  • gk, going by what has happened recently..
remember Laxman came out and said it was hard on him and he was always under pressure whereas other were not etc.. this after scoring 100 against Zim.

    By Blogger siddhu, at 04:37

  • afridi gets bell..

By Blogger Pankaj Tripathi, at 04:37

  • worma, not sure abt balaji...what makes you think he will make it at this point...he made a big mess of his career bowling in challenger trophy in such a pathetic manner...

    By Blogger greg2rescue, at 04:37

  • Worma.. Balaji has not played any domestic cricket after his injury.. neither has Nehra.. Zaks, on current form, deserves to be in the XV. Agarkar coz he bowls with the other hand ( remember Brad Williams), three spinners.. I wouldnt drop Kaartick only because he has done nothing to merit the exclusion. And playing 2 keepers for a 3 match series is daft.. Dhoni will have to wait..

    By Blogger galli_cricket, at 04:39

  • worma, i am not disputing that he was the best bowler on show against pak, but, i believe the challenger trophy has a bearing on both test & odi selection in some uncanny way...

    By Blogger greg2rescue, at 04:39

  • Even the srilanka India test match will also be rained off. Poor planning, when it comes to scheduling matches in Chennai

    By Blogger krishkannan, at 04:40

  • Afridi is stupid to tamper with the pitch, they could win this test match without these things

    By Blogger krishkannan, at 04:41

  • third ump called after kanerias appeal..but is not out

By Blogger Pankaj Tripathi, at 04:42

  • game called off guys! so sad

By Blogger Dhruv Deepak, at 04:43

  • Sri lanka will win the Test series

    By Blogger krishkannan, at 04:43

  • I WUD drop Kaartick only because he has done nothing to merit the inclusion. exxcept for that 90 against pak

By Blogger idli vade, at 04:44

  • if Ganguly plays Sri Lanka will win the test series

    By Blogger krishkannan, at 04:44

  • krishkannan
its ok ... hes not captain !!

    By Blogger GK, at 04:46

  • krishkannan
arent u overestimating sri lanka here ?

    By Blogger GK, at 04:46

  • match abandoned...sad..sad..

chennai did have some intriguing matches, that tied test, that 196 by saeed friggin anwar, pak victory, sachins blasts...

why the hell cant these board guys get their logistics right...I am so PISSED...

    By Blogger greg2rescue, at 04:47

  • GK

My concern the team would again be divided into groups

    By Blogger krishkannan, at 04:48

  • krishkannan
no way man. the players know whos in charge now. SG better shape up or ship out. there is no way he will be allowed to play his dirty politics now

    By Blogger GK, at 04:50

  • GK

Not overestimating, but SL had these two weeks to plan and prepare whereas we are busy squaring the series with SA, we do not have time to plan and prepare, so SL has the advantage

    By Blogger krishkannan, at 04:50

  • Krishna Kumar Dinesh Karthick for you..
    10 13 0 245 93 18.84 565 43.36 0 1 36 0 29 4

It cant get more pathetic. He failed agaisnt ZIM and Bangla too

By Blogger idli vade, at 04:50

  • 43.36 is his strike rate. Dont mistake it for avg.. Avg is 18.84

By Blogger idli vade, at 04:51

  • GK

I really wish there are no politics, i dont mind SG or any other player until they play as a team

    By Blogger krishkannan, at 04:52

  • GK, Krish, here is my prediction...

    SG will play...
1)First ball, fends a short ball from vaas who is specifically brought into attack for SG.
2)Second ball, GONE. tries to go back to a full delivery in anticipation of another short delivery. plumb in front...

People with stop watches will confirm that his stay was less than 2 mins in keeping up with the tradition...

    By Blogger greg2rescue, at 04:52

  • Why cannot we go with 5 bowlers in teh first test against Srilanka
If the pitch can assist pace (atleast 20 overs in a day) then we can have 3 seamers + 2 spinners
    IP,AA,ZK & AK,HS
If the pitch assist spin or is a batting beauty we can have 2 pacers + 3 spinners (IP,AA,AK,HS,MK)

If SG is not included , then i will favour a 5 bowler formula for tests also...
Rahul was courageous in using 5 bowler formula in ODI's so why not Tests when MD can be considered as one of the main batsman and IP can play teh way our former keepers bat ... and anyway we have teh other bowlers who can hang around or throw bat at ...if need be

    By Blogger rajesh, at 04:52

  • greg2rescue

Your prediction on SG is 100% possible

    By Blogger krishkannan, at 04:53

  • I think Saurva will enter India team thru a window

By Blogger idli vade, at 04:55

  • rajesh, spot on. yeah...why not 5 bowlers...hell, they could play even 2 fast bowlers and 3 spinners...but, alas...if SG is selected, he will play...If not it will be seen as a political move by RD & GC and they would not want that, so, it will be the same old 4 bowlers formula...

    By Blogger greg2rescue, at 04:55

  • guys has the game been called off for sure?

    By Blogger K-Slice, at 04:56

  • The 3rd spiiner shud be Kulamani Parida

By Blogger idli vade, at 04:56

  • My predictions on the remaining ODS

    chennai ODI - cancelled

Calcutta ODI - disrupted, Sa declared winners

    Last ODI - SA win

    By Blogger krishkannan, at 04:56

  • ok folks...really time to go to sleep for me...adios & happy blogging...

    By Blogger greg2rescue, at 04:57

  • gilly
hahahahah. dude you realy crack me up!!
    kulamani parida?
i have seen him bowl. ummm. yeah.
    whatever dude.

    By Blogger K-Slice, at 04:58

  • krishkannan
    nice and optimistic i see

    By Blogger GK, at 05:00

  • Calcutta has the habit disrupting the matches, with SG issue, i sure expect one this time

    By Blogger krishkannan, at 05:00

  • yeah,
anybody can confirm that the game has been officially called off ?

    By Blogger GK, at 05:00

  • In ODIs we need batsmen, in Test cricket we can only win by taking 20 wickets and rarely any other way (yes, declarations can happen!) --- so we need 5 bowlers!

    By Blogger JAGS, at 05:01

  • k-slice,
i hv not seen kulamani parida. i hv no idea how good he is
but am sure he cant be worse than murali karthik.

By Blogger idli vade, at 05:01

  • yes the match has been called off. I am watching on Willow TV here.

    By Blogger JAGS, at 05:02

  • GK

Sincere i wish India to win all the time, i want to be optimistic as well, but we are not yet upto that level of consistency to be optimistic

    By Blogger krishkannan, at 05:02

  • st gilly,
it would be like comparing karthik to warne to compare parida to kartik.
in that case we might as well get hirwani back.

    By Blogger K-Slice, at 05:02

  • The point is if SG does not return .... then Rahul shld be courageous enough to go with 5 bowlers ...
I am not impressed with the persons who will be included as the 6th batsman if we go with 4 bowlers ...
Kaif's abilities - did not warrant him a place .. he is not in form now ...(His form was a monteh back in zim)
Yuvi - not gud against spin .. He can be included abroad.. but i don't want yuvi to learn spin against murali in test matches

    By Blogger rajesh, at 05:02

  • gk,cricinfo says not for sure yet. but kea says its raning again.
so i guess we can all hit the hay!

    By Blogger K-Slice, at 05:03

  • slice,
    whatever it is...
we dont need that crap so called left arm spinner called murali karthik.
this guy shud take up some other job.. probably modelling

By Blogger idli vade, at 05:04

  • Guys,
there are lot of people here who ridicule murali karthik ...

MK is not consistent .. but he is an attacking bowler ... He erally bowled very well in patches (some overs) in each ODI .. MK is not as worse a bowler as we intend to think
Has good loop and variations too

    By Blogger rajesh, at 05:04

  • bye friends and good night - catch with you at the next ODI.

    By Blogger JAGS, at 05:05

  • parida is left arm orthodox is he?

    By Blogger galli_cricket, at 05:06

  • Eng are 112 behind with 4 wickets in hand. Guess we are in for another feast of a finish!

    By Blogger Mount_Cleverest, at 05:07

  • galli,
parida is right arm off spin afaik

    By Blogger GK, at 05:07

  • karthik attacking bowler?
hmmmm thats must be the joke of the century
he cant even bowl. how can he attack?

By Blogger idli vade, at 05:07

  • mount
i would like to see england win this one !! for that they need to get 500+ tho

    By Blogger GK, at 05:08

  • greg, galli: Balaji bowled in Duleep...had a decent run as far as I remember(had a five-for also?). Enough not to consider 'dropping' him from tests yet. Same goes for Zaheer. And anyway for test matches our pace lineup would be Pathan, Agarkar and then these two. Don't think the youngsters would get a test callup so soon. Nehra is ruled out.

    By Blogger worma, at 05:09

  • worma,
i dont remember balaji doing particularly well in duleep. had one good spell. zaheer did really well but i dont like him. anyway i guess for now they will both be retained altho im not excited at the prospect of seeing that lazy sloth medium pacer flop in bg matches zaheer in action again

    By Blogger GK, at 05:11

  • gilly,
incidentally kartik is actually a far more attacking bowler than parida. if your only point is to get MK out then why not try ramesh pawar from mumbai in his place?

    By Blogger K-Slice, at 05:12

  • gk: yep...not 'particularly well' but only 'decent run' as I said. Enough to be retained.

    By Blogger worma, at 05:13

  • k-slice
i do think the mumbaikars should take a leaf from the kolkatans book and threaten to create chaos at the last odi if powar is not selected in the test team. this has been a great precedent set by some kolkatans to hold indian cricket hostage.

    By Blogger GK, at 05:15

  • cricinfo doesnt say match called off. they want the users to log in..

By Blogger idli vade, at 05:16

  • there was funny ganguly interview in ndtv.

By Blogger idli vade, at 05:16

  • what was the whole ganguly interview abt ?

    By Blogger GK, at 05:18

  • lol gk... but powar is not a "star", let alone a "superstar"... and wouldnt the mumbaikars press for sairaj bahutale or nilesh kulkarni prior to Powar?

    By Blogger galli_cricket, at 05:18

  • Only Test India vs England

    India 289
    England 56/5

    By Blogger galli_cricket, at 05:19

  • nilesh kulkarni got a wicket in his very first ball in test cricket.
    got nothing thereafter though

By Blogger idli vade, at 05:19

  • galli_cricket
who says hostaging shud apply only to stars ? if someone does we can take them to court for that. btw bahutule now plays for maharashtra and surely powar is above bahutule and kulkarni afa having a chance in the indian team is concerned

    By Blogger GK, at 05:20

  • boucher.. against SL too

    By Blogger galli_cricket, at 05:20

  • oh plz lets not discuss kulkarni now

    By Blogger GK, at 05:20

  • The reported used the word "poor performance over the past 2 years"
gangu got upset and dint like it. he replied saying its not fair to call it poor perf. its jist that he was not able to convert starts to big ones. he gave some examples like 77 runout agaisnt pak

By Blogger idli vade, at 05:22

  • gk: SG told TOI y'day that last year he was second highest run getter for the country behind RD and the only difference wasaround 10-15 runs. Said he deserves to play because he has contributed so uch to indian cricket in the last 10 years.

    By Blogger Mount_Cleverest, at 05:22

  • dunno if any of the current Mumbai players will make it into the Indian team gk.. and there is massive resentment in this part of the world over that... esp given that Mumbai hasnt done so shabbily in the lst 5 ranji tourneys.

Would like to see Amit Mishra make the Indian team though...

    By Blogger galli_cricket, at 05:23

  • haha
so now SG has lost his sense of memory and mathematics also ?

    By Blogger GK, at 05:23

  • galli
but mumbai has 2 reps definitely. i do think amol muzumdar was one of the worst ill-treated cricketers tho. he deserved a chance at some point of time

    By Blogger GK, at 05:24

  • Who wants to be a selector!!!! Damned if they do, damned if they dont.... and I believe that they are the only ones to be blamed for thier predicament.

    By Blogger galli_cricket, at 05:25

  • the reported ask gangu in which form of cricket he wants to come back.. gangu replied saying he wants to play both odi and tests.
he also said, he perofromed well over 10 years. and its up to the selectors to decide now.. and funny thing was he mentioned that 100 agaisnt zim too.

By Blogger idli vade, at 05:26

  • GK

SG in NDTV stressed about his great record and that he was only 15 runs less than Dravid last year and he could not convert few of his 60s and 80s to hundreds,

Also said he is aiming to be back in ODIs and tests because of his record

    By Blogger krishkannan, at 05:27

  • GK,

Amol Muzumdar should have been in the Indian team 5 years ago.. Guess he was at the wrong place at the wrong time and got shafted for it..
Vindo Kambli wont make the grade again...
Powar was tried for the pakistan series. Dont think he has played for India after that..

And to think that this city provided the bulk of Indias batting in the 80s.

    By Blogger galli_cricket, at 05:28

  • Romesh Powar defntley is not an attacking bowler ...
Karthik is far better an attacking bowler than powar from what i have seen him in those ODI's ...(and news reports)
We don't need any negative spinners... even though i for one know that powar (like sriram in batting) gets a bucketful of wickets on any surface in India in domestic matches ...

    By Blogger rajesh, at 05:29

  • krishkannan
being 15 rus behind dravid ... was he talking abt tests or odis ?? or out of his hat ?

    By Blogger GK, at 05:30

  • Powar was unlucky to have been left out after pak series. He showed great character in that 2nd odi.
Amol i heard was tehnically correct. I hvnt seen him. Probably unlucky not to hv played for india
Kambli was a stylish batsman. May be not consitent and loose technique.
But i have seen him hooking ambrose for sixes

By Blogger idli vade, at 05:31

  • forget SG's bility for a momnt.. and his record for the last two years.. given the open animosity that he and GC nurse for each other, the dressing room will be the worst place to be if you are an India player and both SG and GC are present.

Dunno what that will mean to team chemistry.

    By Blogger galli_cricket, at 05:31

  • rajesh
u may be rite abt powar. i had just raised the issue to expose the shallow-minded ness of some SG fans who have bullied the board to prepone the selection

    By Blogger GK, at 05:31

  • I do think that powar should be tried out for ODIs. He bowls and bats with a lot of attacking flair.

Do not know the reason for him being dropped after the Pak tour in the first place, I thought he had done decently well for a debutant.

    By Blogger Mount_Cleverest, at 05:31

  • mount
yup, but with bhajji returning to form cud be difficult for him

    By Blogger GK, at 05:32

  • gk: I think SG meant that his ODI+ test aggregates were just 15 behind RD's ODI aggregate.

    Fair enough..I'd say.

    By Blogger Mount_Cleverest, at 05:32

  • Karthik bowls non negative bowling first and then gets hit.
He then switches to negative bowling and even there gets hit.. :-)
Btw rajesh, do u remember karthik's perofromace in that sydneye test ? if he had give a very lil supoort to kumble, india cud hv won.
but he was hammered on a spinning track

By Blogger idli vade, at 05:33

  • GK,

whats with bhajis batting anyways... awesome straight hits... if he continues in this manner, we will have 2 all rounders instead of 1 :)

    By Blogger galli_cricket, at 05:34

  • The only test in which Karthik did well was in Mumbai test agaisnt Australia..
But a part timer like m clarke takes 6 for 9 of 5 overs agaisnt indias there :-)

By Blogger idli vade, at 05:35

  • In the Indian Express print version, there is an excerpt from Waugh's autobiography 'Out Of My Comfort Zone'.
Waugh criticises Ganguly's habit of interacting closely with the groundsmen preparing pitches for international matches. It "wasn't too different from match-fixing", the former Australian captain says.

    By Blogger niti, at 05:35

  • mount,
Pawar is not such a good option .. That guy has gud attitude and works hard .. but talent wise he is something like kaif(????)
    gk,
    yup ...ok .. got it

    By Blogger rajesh, at 05:35

  • mount,
    lol

    galli,
i wudnt be so optimistic. it cud just have been a one-off for bhajji as far as batting goes

    By Blogger GK, at 05:36

  • boucher.. i saw the sydney test from start to finish...we could have won the test if the Indians had declared the first innings sooner.. also, kumble was magnificent in the first innings.. and how bout ricky ponting's stumping that was fluffed?
frrom what i saw, i believe Kartiks brief was to hold one end up while Kumble weaved his magic from the other.. vide his over the wicket, foot outside the legstump line in the test.

how much of kartiks non ability was because his skipper ( SG) did not believe in the left arm spin option?
I believe MK is a much better bowler playing under RD than he ever was under SG.

    By Blogger galli_cricket, at 05:38

  • i do think talent is often overemphasised. moderate talent with a great temperament and attitude can do wonders. and i believe kaif can do wonders with his moderate talent

    By Blogger GK, at 05:38

  • Bhajji does come up with these lovely little cameos every once in a while, wonder if he can handle batting at No. 3.

    By Blogger Mount_Cleverest, at 05:38

  • He says ...To me it wasn't too different from match-fixing, because captains who try this on are attempting to alter the conditions in collusion with a force they shouldn't be tampering with

    By Blogger niti, at 05:39

  • c boucher,
yup . i too was really disappointed with karthik in australia ... if u remember even sunil joshi bowled superbly in a ODI match in Australia (kumble was ropped for that game) in 1999-00 series.
I am not very sure whether karthik is really an attacking boiwler for all pitches and conditions or only on home turf (India) alone ...

MK is too slow that he needs pitch to do something ...
But MK really did well in India even in teh ODi series against SL or the last ODi against SA ..
Last ODI .. MK was terrific .. i saw the match and he was too gud ... comparable to HS in performance

    By Blogger rajesh, at 05:39

  • Murali Karthik agaisnt aussies at Sydney (spinning track)
    19-1-122-0

When he started his spell , it was like 6-0-60-0 something.

Yah he is attacking bowler :-)

By Blogger idli vade, at 05:39

  • Rajesh,

Looking at what Powar managed in the challengers and the Duleep trophy games..I still believe he has what it takes. But yes, the point about an inform Bhajji keeping the offie's slot is valid.

    By Blogger Mount_Cleverest, at 05:40

  • Guys,

This Calcutta disruption is a real possibility with the support of BCCI and politicians

    By Blogger krishkannan, at 05:41

  • Any of you guys read the Kiran More interview in TOI. I really liked the bit about "selectors, unlike statisticians, do not go just by performance", and "we want to develop the game"

By Blogger The Gang Admin, at 05:42

  • mount,
i agreed that powar takes a bucketful of wickets in domestic ..
But do u really see him as a lone spinner in an indian team (if at all a situation comes ...)
I for one really feel he is like sriram in bowling .. and his career will be over in first class matches .. surely not cut for test match cricket ..
If he really improves .. then great ..

    By Blogger rajesh, at 05:43

  • krishkannan
    hope not

    gang admin
true. last few occasions selectors have done a commendable job

    By Blogger GK, at 05:43

  • rajesh,
LOL u r saying karthik was terrific in the last ODI.. ;-) but tell me which spinner wasnt good that day. even yuvraj was turning it squre. :-) ( but karthik cudnt get a wicket though :-) )

U urself admitted karthik is slow.. I think he is tooo slow to be effective. His so called loop, arm ball, flight will not work with that pace :-)

By Blogger idli vade, at 05:44

  • so that match has been called off - what a shame.

    By Blogger SaintHari, at 05:44

  • GK,
we anyway differ on Kaif ... I remember our kaif arguments ..
But i still feel KAif shld go to his basics(domestic) and improve hell a lot and come back ( shld take rahul dravid as a mentor and do what is reqd ..)

    By Blogger rajesh, at 05:44

  • GK

I agree, Selectors have done a decent job since SL ODIs

    Hope they continue

    By Blogger krishkannan, at 05:45

  • Kaif is pathtic in both hitting and defence.
I dont know when will slectors will stop picking kaif and karthik in india team
And dont know when they will stop picking Sridharan Sriram in presidents's eleven, chief ministers eleleve

By Blogger idli vade, at 05:47

  • Guys,

Lets say cancellation of the Chennai ODI is a blessing in disguise and some rest for our team

    By Blogger krishkannan, at 05:47

  • krishkannan
selecting rahul dravid as captain for the tests is another great move

    By Blogger GK, at 05:48

  • c boucher,
MK is slow .. but we need to give him some time to show his abilities ...
RD has faith in MK and i would love to see MK play his trade against SL - good players of spin bowling .. and if MK is scuccessful,he shld be persisted with ..
Now that RD is captain for tests also there is no excuse for MK to say he was not confident etc ..

I would give him these chances simply beacuse he has potential and is an attacking bowler and has been treated shabbily before and not given enough chances

    By Blogger rajesh, at 05:48

  • For those who argue kaif is a good finisher, hitter and all..Kaif has hit 9 sixes in 100 days.
    Here they are
32.2 Alok Kapali to Kaif, SIX, tossed up delivery outside the off stump,
Kaif comes down the track and lofts it over the long-off fence
24.3 Mbangwa to Kaif, SIX, short delivery on the middle and off, Kaif
picks it up quickly and lofts it to the mid-wicket fence, all
    timing in that shot
45.5 GW Flower to Kaif, SIX, down the legside, nicely moves further to
the on, and then pulls the ball way over deep midwicket
    first six for India
46.2 Hondo to Kaif, SIX, now Kaif's finding his range! a half volley
outside off stump, just smashes through the line, lofting it hard,
high and handsome over long off, clearing the boundary by quite
    some margin
46.6 Willoughby to Kaif, SIX, and Kaif picks Willoughby from middle and
off and simply slaps the ball far over long on, a mighty hit, well
timed as well, Willoughby not having a good time of it here
48.2 Willoughby to Kaif, SIX, a biggie this time! Willoughby pitches
just short this time, and Kaif rocks abck and thumps the ball
cleanly over the midwicket ropes, way over too! Good shot
48.6 Willoughby to Kaif, SIX, and this one again outside the off, and
Kaif gets on one knee and belts this one high and far, the long on
fielder trying to get a hand on it but failing miserably as it
falls metres beyonds the ropes. Kaif in sight of a hundred here!
38.2 Tudor to Kaif, SIX, short, literally cracks off the bat and ends up
in the tavern stand, clean pull
42.1 Irani to Kaif, SIX, over the top of mid-wicket

By Blogger idli vade, at 05:48

  • lol krish.. dont think that will happen.. after the BCCI elections, a new selection committee will be appointed. The current selection committees tenure ended sometime in october... but since the board elections hadnt taken place, the selectors were not changed..

Guess the selectors showed guts only because they had nothing to lose..

    By Blogger galli_cricket, at 05:48

  • krish
it also ensures that the series will enter the last match alive

    By Blogger GK, at 05:49

  • GK

RD is perfect for Test captain's job, he has the ability to analyse and judge the situation and conditions and plan the strategies

    By Blogger krishkannan, at 05:49

  • The selectors pick the team or the next 2 ODI's and the Test matches against Sri Lanka - wonder what they have gained from the Chennai visi, except for the hospitality :)

The team outlines by Chan ....
    . Sehwag
    2. Gambhir
    3. Dravid (c)
    4. Sachin
    5. Venugopal Rao (Laxman missing out!)
    6. Kaif
    7. Yuvraj
    8. Dhoni (Karthik missing out!)
    9. Irfan Pathan
    10. Agarkar
    11. Zaheer (should be welcomed back - RP Singh may just miss out!)
    12. Kumble
    13. Harbhajan
    14. Murali Kartik (or another paceman - Nehra, Sree Santh?)

seems to what the selectors can really pick .... Nehra is out (injured), Laxman might edge in and we are unlikely to see three spinners.

    By Blogger SaintHari, at 05:50

  • c boucher,
I am harping on these kaif thing for a while .. (even when he is scoring runs) that kaif shld be dropped and teh reasons shld be told to him clearly ..
Actually they are doing a disservice to kaif by including him and not making him improve .. a i feel the extended stint with teh top players have not made kaif gud in any dept of batting
I want a guylike kaif to become rahul dravid because of his gud attitude and hard work and fitness .. but for that u shld be good in ur trade .. that is batting

    By Blogger rajesh, at 05:51

  • galli
cud be true, hope it is not tho.

    By Blogger GK, at 05:51

  • Kaif has hit 3 sixes of Willoughby.
2 sixes of part timers grant flower and kapali
1 six of bits and piece Irani
1 each of pathetic mangwa and hondo
The only good six was probably of Tudour.. He is a crap bowler though :)

By Blogger idli vade, at 05:52

  • GK

I agree the series will be alive

    By Blogger krishkannan, at 05:52

  • Now that the match is abandoned, match #3 will not have any bearing on the teams for the next 2 ODIs and the test series!! What fun :-)

By Blogger The Gang Admin, at 05:52

  • yah rajesh.. i agree he is a team man and a gud fielder. but he has to bat first

By Blogger idli vade, at 05:53

  • sainthari
those who think laxman is not an automati choice for tests clearly do not deserve the ability to think at all

    By Blogger GK, at 05:54

  • The only other change in the team outlined above might be Saurav Ganguly in place of Kaif .... and that might not be totally wrong.

    By Blogger SaintHari, at 05:54

  • Thank you GK - tell that to the powers that be as well

    By Blogger SaintHari, at 05:55

  • gang
what is the fun in that ?

    By Blogger GK, at 05:55

  • gk,

the proof of the pudding will be in the eating... what are the odds that the selectors wont crmble to BCCI pressure and pick SG for the Koklata ODI?
and what are te odds that the next selection committee will continue the "good" work done by the current bunch?

wish Balaji telefilms make a soap on the BCCI..will top the TRP ratings and will provide them enough material to keep the soap alive for the next 100 years :)

    By Blogger galli_cricket, at 05:56

  • How cna u guys even think of omitting laxman from teh test team????????????/ very surprising

    By Blogger rajesh, at 05:57

  • Off topic: Got up...found this news. Match abandoned bad news then..good news in the form..
....Lalu lost by good margin. THis is a victory for Bihar people; center can rest easy for now, no mid-term polls fear. BTW, Lalu cannot demand to include his son in Bihar ranji team...implications for cricktet world.

    By Blogger Rajg, at 05:58

  • sainthari
to be fair i dont think the selectors wud ever contemplate not having laxman in the test side when they meet tmorrow

    galli
u r rite, but one can always hope rite ?

    By Blogger GK, at 05:59

  • oh no rajg.. lalu will do one better.. contest for the president of the BCCI..

He is a local lad.Goes to show all these yester year greats are a bunch of idiots. This country loves mediocrity like nobody's business.

    By Blogger laks1234, at 06:04

  • gk: why was the selection of the teams (2 ODIs & Tests) put of until after the 3rd ODI? prolly to assess the performance after the match. But with the match being abandoned, things don't change!

Try justifying inclusions and exclusions now!

By Blogger The Gang Admin, at 06:09

  • but gang admin... the justification is obvious..
Gangs is a home boy.. knows the conditions better than most...
the sun rises in the east..
    Dalmiya rules...
    the selectors say so...

    By Blogger galli_cricket, at 06:14
