R Mohan, on Sourav's comeback

The columnist, in his latest, says Sourav will likely make the Test team against Sri Lanka.
Sources reveal that hectic lobbying is going on not only to ensure that Ganguly retains his place in the Test team but also for him to continue to be the Test captain. The issue does not stop there either. Efforts are on to secure a place for Ganguly in the one-day international team for the Kolkata match (November 25) on the grounds that the public of that city might take it badly if he is not in the team.

Elsewhere, in the Asian Age, Saad Bin Jung on the former captain:
I recently saw a movie on the father of Rock and Roll and wondered whether Sourav Ganguly had seen it too. Alan Freed evolved Rock and Roll and then spent the rest of his life trying to stay on top. Though Freed was evicted from the Rock & Roll scene, his brand of music moved on to become the most popular music in the world yet Freed was forgotten and remained a lonely man till his end. The reason — he refused to accept that his creation had become bigger than him.
Ganguly gave to Indian cricket what no cricket captain before him has done — the Ganguly attitude. Having given Indian cricket this essential tool for consistency in winning, a team’s greatest asset, and having lost his batting prowess, instead of moving on and remaining an eternal hero, he is finding it difficult leaving his creation behind.

And elsewhere, this headline is, IMHO, unwarranted -- discuss a player's performance, by all means, but why add such epithets?

Sadly a lot in the media(& i would include u too here in view of your points in the previous write-up) seem to be missing the point,& that is SG is not VVS or Balaji. In spite of his limitations, the kind of impact that SG had had on Indian cricket is enormous. And i think a lot of the anti-SG media are doing their best to muddle Indian cricket history by bringing in a personal & parochial dimension to this whole episode.I would say that at this point, any genuine, unbiased cricket lover would want SG to come back & perform once more, before maybe finally retiring from the game. The way he has been treated is really a shame,& it's a pity that very few of us seem to realise this. It's not as if SG had gone out on a match-fixing scandal or something;the least he deserves is some respect for his contributions, which sadly is missing. And one thing that the entire sports fraternity can probably learn from SG is his combative attitude on the field;i am sure they wouldn't learn it even from SRT,genius that he is!

  • I am not the Hater for SG.

I feel that SG was the Greatest Captain , India ever had.

Only thing we are saying is go to Cricket basics and solve your short pitch ball issues.

Regain the form by scoring more runs in the domestic level and then no one will stop your entry into the international level.

    By Blogger gangulysucks, at 13:40

  • With all due respect, i think we have seen enough of ganguly. He has been a good player when in form and led the country well in troubled times.

But enough is enough, whats with this craziness over one individual. Why does he deserve to be back in the team? if public sentiments from a certain city or past glory is the criteria then why not bring back Sunil gavaskar and Kapil dev and the whole World cup winning 83 squad (if still alive).

Since the argument SG supporters give is nothing better than the one i just mentioned. Its time for them to come to their senses and stop whining and wake up to the reality that Indian cricket needs to move forward with a new captain and younger replacement.

do you honsetly think VVS and RD who crafted those famous wins under SG at eden gardens, adelaide did it based on SG's motivation tactics. don't you think these guys have it in them to do it no matter who the skipper was. i do not the dispute the fact though he did a commendable job as captain at times. but all this stuff that he built this team and they won because of him is a bit over hyped. also he did not have such a proud record in the ODI's finals. most famous wins under him came in tests and the guys who contributed mostly would have done so irrespective of the skipper.

he deserves due credit and he got it for things he done when he was the captain. that should have no bearing in him getting selected in the indian team or not selected.

  • Recent TEST performance of SG,

    16, 101(262 balls), 21, 12, 12, 1, 2, 45, 5, 9

(leaving out some 50s against BD and SA who was passing through a bad phase. Also the match was in India. Had he scored a century, I would have mentioned. But 40-50 runs against SA of that time has no meaning so left that)

    ODIs,

    Here are Ganguly's recent ODIs

    0, 48, 0, 22, 55(agaist BD), 22, 0, 9, 4, 18, 51(110

    balls), 2*, 26, 5, 20, 19, 2, 31

Most of matches were against easy opponents...

HOW LONG ONE CAN WAIT FOR HIS GRACEFUL EXIT...WHEN HE HIMSELF IS NOT ABLE TO UNDERSTAND THE NEED FOR A GRACEFUL EXIT FOR A LEGEND LIKE HIM?

  • Prem,
Regarding "India Daily" headlines on Ganguly, I fully agree with you. We, Indians, either use Everestenian - sorry for the new coinage - encomiums to describe something good or most unpalatable epithets to degrade a person. I am not at all in favor of the return of Ganguly at the helm now, considering his shortcomings as a cricketer only. But I really hate to dwell upon the purely personal traits of a person outside his cricket. Tell me who else including the author do not want money he deserves to earn?

    By Blogger Krish, at 14:18

  • shivam:
I would'nt necessarily call him a legend though that does not mean he is not a good batsman or a captain.

    By Blogger ramshorns, at 14:19

  • Shivam,
Go thru cricket history & you will innumerable other instances of players & specifically captains going thru bad patches. It is imperative in this case that he be given a shaking up of some sort, which the Aussie selectors especially have been masters of!Now what we are trying to do is follow,or try to follow the philosophy of,another country(but in a half-baked,pathetic way).Be honest here, why was everybody so reluctant to give him one last chance as captain...coz many were afraid that he might succeed & turn the tables on them. The way it was all done seemed to suggest that a lot of people were afraid lest SG start succeeding..surely the least that should have been given to him is a tour-to-tour captaincy with the rider that he lasts till the team performs.VERY FEW PLAYERS IN THE HISTORY OF SPORTS KNOW WHEN TO EXIT..IN A TEAM GAME,THE ONUS IS AS MUCH ON THE SYSTEM,PROBABLY MORE THAN ON THE PLAYER HIMSELF,TO ENSURE THAT THE PROCESS IS SMOOTH.ELSE THE WORLD WOULD BE SMOOTH OF DISGRUNTLED YESTER-PLAYERS WHO OTHERWISE COULD HAVE GIVEN A LOT BACK TO THE GAME.JUST COMPARE AUSTRALIAN FORMER CRICKETERS TO THEIR INDIAN COUNTERPARTS TO UNDERSTAND WHAT I MEAN...
    Anyway,am done for the day...bye.

If Ganguly has to be included in the Culcatta match, on the grounds that the public of that city might take it badly if he is not in 6the team, will Balaji be included in the Chennai match, even if he is not in the scheme of things, if Chennai crowds demonstrate saying "NO BALAJI, NO CRICKET MATCH".

I dont think that such performances would have been possible under any other captain simply because it has never been done by any other Indian captain before in 70 years of test cricket. just to give an example I dont know of any World(leave alone Indian) captain who could trust his spinners to the extent that he would bat first in a mother-of-all-seamers Headingley and come up trumps....and there have been far more decorated spinners in the past. I had no issue when Ganguly was dropped the first time and asked to prove form and fitness. The double standards after that became quite apparent.
I think kban wrote it most succinctly and I am ctrl+c, ctrl+v ing his post in another thread
    ----------
The original argument was prove form and fitness -- SG did that in his first Duleep Trophy game but was not selected. The reason proferred was "don't change a winning combination" -- this made sense but the logic lost lustre when other injured players got a chance to make a comeback even while the team was winning (so the not changing a winning combination argument did not cut ice).

Without anyone saying clearly where SG stands in the future scheme of things, fans have drawn their own conclusions. To the fervent pro SG group, the conclusion is that he is being kept out as a result of the spat with GC and therefore the only way he can make a comeback is if GC is under pressure --the way that happens is if GC's methods fail or hit a roadblock and India stutters along the way.

To the anti-SG group, the only way to prevent SG getting back in the team is to ensure that GC's methods succeed --India does not stutter. This allows SG to be kept out of the team ("maintaining a winning combination") even if SG were, by some chance, to regain and maintain form and fitness.

Hence the two polarized groups with polarized opinions -- each based on a narrow partisan agenda of whether SG is in the team or not, and if India wins or loses, it is secondary only to the primary goal. Sad, but given the way things have turned out and the way BCCI has handled this issue from the beginning (the epitome of shoddiness), what else can one expect ?
    ---------------------
And it's sad that so huge a group of media are writing articles like the one pointed to here by R. mohan. The person clearly doesnt want SG anywhere near the team. Such vitriol when one is writing for a "national" daily shows how much biased reporters are. Poiting out the Jhas & the Sahis while lapping up Mohans and that nincompoop in india daily clearly shows the double standards.

    By Blogger DDirector, at 14:26

  • Some Jurno's at times feel they can feast on SG and no matter what they write will get public attention.
No surprise i havent stumbled on this site in past.
    Headlines like
    "
Money loving restaurant owner Saurav finally learn the lesson – willing to play at any cost
    "
    are totally unwarranted and pathetic.

By Blogger Pankaj Tripathi, at 14:26

  • Ganguly should definitely not be made the test captain, it is very likely that such a move would definitely disrupt the team chemistry, and I dare say that our much abused selectors are smart enough not to do this, irrespective of the lobbying. Much as I dislike Ganguly's antics, IMHO he should definitely be in the test 15, whether he plays in the 11 or not should be left upto the captain. We also need to drop Sehwag for a while, I dont see the reason behind him being given so many chances, the same law (performance) should apply to everyone in the team.

    By Blogger Multy, at 14:27

  • they are saying that he may be back for the calcutta ODI just so that the crowds dont create trouble...hullo ??? We have just about enough of the calcutta crowds...I guess one more issue with crowd behavior, then, eden gardens could become a permanent soccer ground...

    By Blogger greg2rescue, at 14:29

  • @shivam,
Would you mind checking RD's ODI scores just before Nagpur? Similar story. But one man stays in the team another one is ignored. There is more politics than criecking reasons.

No doubt SG has no place in the team for now, and should not have unless he developes a strategy against short balls.

As for SG's record against SA...he has the best record among all Indian batsmen over the years. Bad patch of SA or not. Do not cook the book buddy!!

    By Blogger SS, at 14:30

  • mpb
I think you have hit the nail exactly on the head. The perception was that he *might* succeed now that the ODIs were at home against opposition we have normally defeated (incidentally India have never won a ODI series at home against Aus or Pak..our last 2 opponents). And that is why he was kept out even when they could have tried him out in some of the later matches. That fear that he might succeed drove one Dungarpur loyalist to prepare a "meadow" as a pitch in Rajkot.

    By Blogger DDirector, at 14:34

  • @dd,
Good writing and good analysis on your replay to @rams...although I aprtly agree with ramshorn in the sense that it may be a little early to call SG a legend. I think SRT/Kapil/Gavaskars are legends. But you have your point.

Elsewhere, I have mentioned that the moment SG was out for a duck in the Duleep final, there was a celebration in the press room. The journo's were happy to see him fail. What is the deal? Pathetic commentary on the quality of these people.

    By Blogger SS, at 14:42

  • ddirector,
So you do agree that SG failed on that meadow? Doesnt that reveal that SG has a problem, politics or not?

    By Blogger Toney, at 14:42

  • ss, celebration by the press? Where did you read that? (not questinoing your statement, just news to me)

    By Blogger Toney, at 14:45

  • @toney,

..At Rajkot SG scored a hundred I think on that meadow. He demolished some bowlers who were called for the Indian team later!!

.. celebreation in the press room. I read it in a vernacular daily.

    By Blogger SS, at 14:48

  • toney
    ........
umm no..i dont agree...for in that meadow (and a term close to this was used in cricinfo to describe that pitch) Ganguly scored 117 and the next highest on either side was 57 by Deep DasGupta. No one from the opposing team crossed 45. And the opposing team had 3 former India players and the current *fastest* pacer...who later got selected as an allrounder..so much for winning teams.

    By Blogger DDirector, at 14:49

  • toney, didn't SG get the crucial hundred for EZ on that meadow.

    By Blogger blueboy, at 14:50

  • toney:

SG scored a 100 on that meadow against a good attack. FYI -the match at Rajkot --the meadow -- was the greentop prepared for the EZ vs NZ match.

Again, not starting an argument --just a clarification of facts.

We ahve seen that all the Indian plyears under contract with board ( irrespective of whether they are in the squad), are mum on any issues other than own perforamnce etc.

It is surpsing to see GC taking a job of pervious regime or arrangement etc , every time he gets a chance. Is he free to say things in publisc? One wonders.

I think it is too early to write off RD as a captain. I hope you are not saying this based on one match against SA. Let us watch him for a few more matches under varying situations.

However, one thing I agree, he should speak up and make his mind known in meetings rather than hiding under GC's (under)arm:-))

There are many players in the team because of lobbying. Don't worry about that part.

yeah he did score that hundred when asked to prove form on that 1st meadow...and then saw that form or fitness doesnt matter. As tc pointed out...lobbying matters. ;)
And I don't know if Pawar winning will make BCCI the great organization we all wish it to be. After all these same persons(read bindra & Rajsingh) have already been at the helm of Cricket for more than a decade in the past...nothing has changed. Yea..in case you want that India's modern greatest skipper's career to be cut short due to political influence, that might happen.

actually it's made the selectors' job easier. Instead of worrying abt the selection of the best eleven, they can just select the homeboys wherever the match is played- no problems!

Leave all the headache to the board- they select the venue and the team is already decided!!

India lost one match and you guys are back to where you were.. that shows your character too.. we heard these rumblings when we lost a match to SL..

all this on top of the fact that SG lost match after match after match because of his inept batting, fielding and the way he leads..

SG is a zero brain leader.. always went by "INSTINCTS".. you know what.. ZK being fucked, let me call DInesh Mongia..

Have you forgotten his dance to BOND/SAMI/AFRIDI/RANA and all the bowers you can think off.. his real name is duck these days..

He was a decent bat before the bouncer rule and thats all to it..
by the way, my character is extremely bad.. save yourself from me.

By Blogger Thanks Chappel, at 15:16

  • Yes I do and many other instances. I know dravid understands him and will have different expectation from him as well give him different role but sehwag knows dravid will also want him to perform in that given capacity , if he dosent do even that consistently then I don’t think dravid will treat him differnetly then other young players. like dravid will never think sehwag is in the test team to save the match or give respectable total to the team in one dayer if the team in danger but dravid dose expect him to work hard , get fit to do what he can do. Whether as opner or middle order , bat hard yes but give bowler respect first , then the day is yours .

on Ganguly , i think he is fun as he gives us chance to show even we can become captain of India and play for India as even we have 5 or 6 years good cricketing years remaining and really who could be more motivating and aggressive , never say die then us battle harden die hard cricket lovers. We can look in Steve eyes and say we are not afraid of you in 2001 better then him , what’s more in 2004 we can do it to Adam and Ponting too. We should have been captain then . if only Dalmiya had read our blog.

    By Blogger team, at 15:17

  • My prediction is that Ganguly will either make a comeback in 4th ODI against
SA or at least in SL test series. It is hard to stop him not because of his
performance but due to the blowing air...reasons are

    1. Mahindra speaking in his support,

    2. 4th ODI is in Kolkata and his supporters are committed not to let the
team play if Ganguly is not included. Even ploticians of ruling party as
well as opposition in bangal have said that they will not go to the stadium
for watching/sipporting the match if Ganguly is not included,

    3. More and more statements coming from Ganguly after Duleep Trophy finals.
Earlier he wasn't speaking anything. He said he wants to concetrate on
performance. After the series he is now speaking to media.

So selectors are under tremendous pressure and current team is for first 3
ODIs, so it sets ground for Ganguly's comeback...

    By Blogger Shivam, at 15:17

  • No objection for Ganguly to make it to the team on merit, but getting someone into team just because u want to ensure the game in their hometown can go smoothly is preposterous. Does that mean from now on they are going to announce different team for each game so that the local boy from the venue city is included. May be they can do that and call it 'Rotation and Flexibility'.

Sometimes I kick myself for being an Indian Cricket fan. Can't we try to select our team more like a successful company hiring the best personnel, and not like Manmohan singh appointing his ministers, trying to satisfy all parties, religions, castes and MADAM.

    By Blogger optimist, at 15:17

  • PREM: LOOKS LIKE THE DISCUSSION ABOUT SAURAV IS GETTING OUT OF HAND. IS THIS WHAT YOU WANTED ? I DON'T THINK SO. NO NEED TO BRING IN BODY PART AND WHO IS DOING WHAT WITH WHOSE BODY PARTS!!

    By Blogger ragoth, at 15:18

u are a true SG fan- man you even copy his batting style in the blog

he repeats his ducks twice u repaet your coments twice

    By Blogger suraj, at 15:18

  • Shivam, I note that you have taken care to point out in your [arbitrary] choice of 'recent' performances of SG that all the presentable scores, like 50's and 100's are against 'easy opposition', and also used up a lot of balls. Man, if you need to go into such subjective details, why not include match conditions? For example, in the odi where he scored 51, what was the match situation, and what were the other contributions by team members?

What you have done here is exposed your partisan bias against SG... and your utter lack of any cricketing knowledge and personal integrity...

    By Blogger suraj, at 15:21

  • Guys playing with big boys requires leadership... individula skills will carry you against weaker and lame teams..specially in home grounds... Moreover cricketing brain, respect to coomand a team, instinct ..all traits of a fine and born leader totally absent in Dravid..you need to scrutinize ..most of th etime if the team wins people have a tendency to overllok the captaincy issues... even the so called ex great players ..whose eyes are mostly clored by the regional flavors and /or "get in the tide" kind of syndrome..

Rahul doent have the traits...let him concentrate on test cricket and bring sourav as the captian... the crown belongs to the true born leader- "SOURAV"

    By Blogger tami_telu_Nort, at 15:21

A true leader needs to be cunning also and the satements made recently are in plan of the greater objective the big picture..

on one hand, I think he should come back to team for Calcutta match.. even if we win next two matches.. let the Bengalis see his pitch dance to Ntini and Nel.. and decide for themselves..

  • Have been reading a lot about SG was the greatest captain for India. I have observed quite a few of the series he was captaining and somehow dont agree with that summation. I strongly believe that the results were on the low side because of him - having pillars like SRT, RD, VVS and others, this guy managed to win much less than the bench strength suggested. And this was in the days when his bat was still able to talk for him. Ever since the world found out about his short-ball weakness, he has become a free wicket to the opposition and a mainline manipulator, taking the team to even lower levels of performance. Anyone, but anyone else would have returned in much better results as captain. Alas the guy had the backing of the biggest turd in the shithouse called BCCI and we as viewers have been the losers being handed out crap series after series. I guess it is pointless to expect that the selectors wont be pressurised by Mr big T and will select him to the test team. But as I said in some other comment in this blog, guess we can give him rope to hang himself - select him, let him fail again (after all the guy is consistent - you cannot deny him that) - and I guess the new shithouse mgmt committee will make sure that the lynching party is not too long in coming.

    By Blogger Gardhabh, at 15:24

  • if SG makes it to calcutta ODI, then, opposition bowlers will have a big confusion as to how to bowl to him. Options to consider are :-
    1)Do I bowl short ball first ?
2)Do I bowl yorker first (since he will be expecting short ball) ?
3)Do I bowl 2 short ball and follow it up with a full ball ?
4)Do I bowl a ball angling in and leaving him ?
5)Do I just bowl straight at middle stump ?

They will need to spend more time than planning for SRT...also, it may be a good idea to bring SG in because, it will create rift among the SA bowlers, because, everybody wants a free wicket and they will be competing like hell...

    By Blogger greg2rescue, at 15:25

  • tami,

"Any leader with attitude alone, without performance, finds it hard to retain control"

In order for a Leader to take control, He should the first one to motivate other members in the Team.

21 test wins in 49 matches is below par??? Hello??
Even our great coach has the exact same figures with a World beating Australia team.

    By Blogger DDirector, at 15:27

We needed him badly to make an even contest and get our money's worth

    We got cheated!!!!

    By Blogger suraj, at 15:27

  • other than an "arrogant prick" attitude, SG has shown no leadership qualities...

As a captain he simply sucked. No innovations at all. Same friggin field placings, same batting order, same bowling combination...match situation never mattered at all...

    By Blogger greg2rescue, at 15:28

  • ///////Multy said...
Ganguly should definitely not be made the test captain, it is very likely that such a move would definitely disrupt the team chemistry////////

multy, what 'team chemistry' are you hinting at, bro'?

And, if I second guess what your answer would be, and what it would be based on [GC email issue], why then is SRT not an issue? He is after all a formr captain, and had a spat with RD when as acting captain, RD declared India's innings in Pak when SRT was on the verge of completing a double ton...

    By Blogger oldmanblues, at 15:28

  • @shivam,

    Here are the counterpoints:

    1. Earlier Raj and Bindra spoke in his support. Bindra said that he will come back in due time. Raj said that he is a great player and went all the way to ensure his comfort in Brabourne stadium. Nothing happened. Mahendra is anyway in Dalmia

    2. No one in the ruling party is talking about creating problem. Cricket is too low a priority for a political party. As for ordinary people, have you read anything in the news that people are up to anything. why make racist comments?

    3. I think SG is sticking to the same line as before. He is saying the same things.. only we are reading it more!!

    By Blogger SS, at 15:29

  • this guy tami is too much...he posts the same friggin comments over and over again. Much like Dada's off-repeated comments like "I have made 15000 runs"...

After seeing what they did to the top-order in Hyderabad..They will bowl 3-4 balls up at the rib-cage at good pace to SG and then slip in the fast yorker/full length.. and pick up the wicket.. wow that way India is going to be batting with 10 batsman.

    By Blogger Pings, at 15:33

At this rate we may well need Greg to rescue you ! Ha ha....

If SG won that many matches with no innovation and no changes...do we need innovation and changes??? Just a management question!

  • ddirector, dont go by stats (they can be manipulated, show you how) - 21 out of 49 - 40% victory margin means the guy lost nearly 60% matches (draw is a very rare outcome nowadays unlike in GC's days) - you call that high - guess you and SG need other's company desperately - please take him with you - losers.

    By Blogger Gardhabh, at 15:41

  • I do not think Dada can walk into the current team -- he may crawl in if he really plays out of his skin .... but guys do not degrade his past captaincy ... he has been good ... in fact great .... just because you want to prove a point and win an argueement do not say that SG contributed nothing as a captain .... he and JW did bring us out of the mess and put us at number 2 .... we always lacked the final punch and hoepfully we will develop that now....

    again

In the past Manjrekar took 9 hrs to score hundred against Zim in 1992. That saved india the test. Here Gangu was saving his skin. No pressure on the team.

    By Blogger gangulysucks, at 15:46

  • squarecut, I disagree with you. ZIM is a world-class team with legends (tami will confirm this)...Bangladesh is second best team followed up with kenya, namibia and WI...If our ex-captain makes a 100, then, it can only be against world class teams...

    By Blogger greg2rescue, at 15:47

  • History will show SG as good captain if none of the curennt or future captains fails to win overseas against good teams.

I would have supported SG is the team fails and he contributed in a big way but that didn't happen here. We won few matches under him due to brilliance of some players. He works on his instincts and he is not a thoughtful captain.

When one talks about his career record..do not jump into his last 3 matches. When when discussing his past record, do not jump to saying that he is not needed in the team. Haven’t you guys ever wondered why we are so easily satisfied with one test win in each test playing country regardless of how strong or weak that team was or why we never won the final after market manipulation got us in the finals . even though except Ganguly we had great batsman and were our bowlers really so bad. isn’t marshalling the arsenal to best effect the job of captain , make them look better then they are. Ganguly made them look worst then they were . example , why is Agarker and Harbhajan looking good now days.

Ganguly is a limited player with great luck to be born in the right place. if a player like JP Yadav and Banger , more dedicated and sincere players were given as many chances god only knows how many matches we would have won. People call JP and Banger limited players and under value their dedication and sincerity , check out what banger and jp have done for railways and central zone and be proud of them . to perform for a team where you know no media is going to hype you or the condition you get is the worst received in domestic cricket and then to have the passion to perform requires great character, real guts which they had. If Ganguly had the right to fail for many years and yet play for India, jp deserves at least a fair chance by us fan to show what he can do , though he doesn’t look glamour’s but wouldn’t it be great if the dedication and sincerity he has which has brought railways and central zone in spotlight after consistent PERFORMANCE also has the same effect on Indian team, do we need every player to look like match winner, cant he look simple ,[deceptive] but give meaningful performance . I think Dravid is going to appreciate him. Dravid understands the worth of hardwork and sincerity

    That was really good Suraj.

  • TC, this ddirector is fudging stats like SG is fudging them.. now not ony they are trying to fughe starts, they are turning into outright liars..

By Blogger Thanks Chappel, at 15:59

  • shivam,
you are forgetting the half chances or the dropped catches or the lbws the umpire didnt give and more importantly the wickets he took while daydreaming - when everyone was thinking he was squinting to get his contacts in place - I remember a character like that on the idiot box - Mungerilal ke haseen sapne - same squinting before going into a daydream.

    By Blogger Gardhabh, at 16:00

  • squarecut, form or no form, this guy does not deserve a place for creating politics in the team...He maintained captaincy just by crook. exactly like the way JD manipulated the last elections...
bade miya (dalmiya)...chotee miya (ganguly meow)...

    By Blogger greg2rescue, at 16:01

  • Since SG is a top order batsmen whats is the need for him to talk about his wickets in duleep trophy. May be he is giving signals to GC that he is a multidimensional player(he accecpted that he sucks in batting and feilding) which is what GC is looking for now a days.

    By Blogger squarecut, at 16:02

  • Breaking news...
"Ganguly heartily sickened by his non-inclusion has migrated to Kenya to find a spot in their team. Kenya team is delighted to have somebody who has scored 15000 runs carry their drinks for them"...

    By Blogger greg2rescue, at 16:05

  • I forgot the site which gives statistics year by year test or onedayers. It would interesting to get Gangu's numbers post Brisbane century till end of Zimbabwe tour.

    By Blogger sreeram, at 16:06

  • ddirector was correct about SG's stats at least in won ODI (didn't check test) as captain.
    76 3359 144 51.67 9 19 32 5/34 32.06 1 29 0

    By Blogger Sudip, at 16:06

  • Prem always wants to take a morally high position, and perhaps consciously, tries to position himself away from the, "masses".

When Ganguly was playing and captaining, he did all sorts of surgeries like a doctor from donation Medical College, on Ganguly's merits and more on demerits, and what not. He argued that SG is unfit to play, in different words.

Now SG is out as he desired. When SG is not making a comeback, Prem talks about taking a neutral position. Why this switch in position!!

I can imagine what Prem's position will be if and when Ganguly comes back -- Say that BCCI is back to politicking; Dalmiya and Co. placed Ganguly in the team; Try to undermine him with him impeccable 20/20.

There are enough ppl to follow his view and create ruckus. Good job!!!

You say: just like Bengalis cant face the truth as far as SG is concerned.

How do you know? All bloggers use monickers... and even the 'santanu de' guy might be a tamil for all you know, just as Tami-whatever might be a bengali...

And besides them, all you have so far come up with is the familiar story of the 'one neighbour I know'... which is not verifiable...

Just as your claim of having Muslim friends says nothing about your inherent bias against muslims... the logic of 'good muslim' vs 'bad muslim', ie 'muslims i know' vs 'those i do not know but read about everyday in the newspaper' is an extremely stupid and salacious agrument... Simply because you deny the fact that the person in question might have another identity [as a member of a nation, linguistic group, etc]...

Let me explain... who in your definition is a terrorist? And going by your definition [whatever that might be, so long as it is from some reputable source like some dictionary], do you have any statistical database on how many terrorist acts have been perpetrated by 'muslims' in the recent past [say last 20 years] as opposed to other religious groups [like buddhists, christians, jews, hindus]? Or are your prejudices based on media based coverage post 9/11, orchestrated by the White House and its lackeys?

PS: I agree that stats hide as much as they reveal. We could still, I guess, come to the agreement that in the absense of any other parameter, they are the best possible criterion for evaluation?

    ...........................

Overall, I would earnestly request you to refrain from making the kind of parochial statements that you are oft prone to making... Try to base your judgement and your statements on whatever little is objectively verifiable by everyone on this blog. Or else, this will be my last interaction with you [not that it would matter the slightest to you-or me]!

  • Nagma didnt play while standing straight..

and who knows who handled whom.. Nagma might have handled him..

A : Look at the one bashing The Bengal Tiger.

By Blogger dust bowl curator, at 16:13

  • did u all guys note...SG proved "maggy noodle 2 min" add true during the last inning of Duleep Trophy...he was exactly for two min...after losing "Sona-Chandi" add, now he is depended on Noodles only...that is why he wanted to impress them by spending exactly 2 min at the crease...

Q : 'cos the job market hasn't fully picked up yet.

By Blogger dust bowl curator, at 16:15

  • Another joke, which is old, many of u might have heard, but still...

Ganguly just went for batting and a call for him came from and add agency...they wanted to talk to SG...team manager was holding the call...manager replies, "just hold on for a minute...SG has just gone for batting and will be back in a moment..."

    By Blogger Shivam, at 16:15

  • oldmanblues,
I dont have to prove it to you whether an overwhelming majority of terrorists are muslims are not.. you dont need statistics to prove it.. they are plenty of statistics.. you can find if you are so desperate to find facts.. ie.. try to find .. out of all jailed terrorists, what percentage are muslims..

by the way, this if off topinc and should stop here.. however I wont restrain you or me from arguing over it..

Second, How do I know Bengalis are SG suporter.. or not..
First, I am not talking about people on the BLOG.. Its about protests in Calcutta.. those silly ones.. CM of Bengal.. Bengali newspapers which should reflect popular sentiments(if Bengal is a democary.. which I think it has to be..).. Dalmiya and his gang..

By Blogger Thanks Chappel, at 16:16

  • oldmanblues:
With respect to your question about "team chemistry", we can speculate ad nauseam about personal alliances and politics within the team, historical incidents and what have you; but here is the situation the way I see it (open to hearing counter-arguments):
    * There has been plenty of turmoil caused by the Ganguly episode (no point in arguing about who was responsible or at fault etc) not too long ago
    * Selectors made Dravid the captain, and by all indications the team members respected the man before and continue to respect him now
    * The team seems to have gelled well after RD started his latest stint as captain, and definitely have given a good overall performance with almost everyone chipping in.
    * It seems obvious to me that his authority over the team has been estabished, and there is no doubt about who is in charge there.
    * Much as I think there is certain value to the two-captain theory, I think in this particular situation it would definitely be a bad move, especially if Ganguly is brought back in as a test captain. The last thing that a team recovering from internal conflict wants is confusion about who is in charge and different people providing leadership. It helps neither captain in this situation; and given the sensitivities involved (as well as the tremendous amount of politics) it can definitely be disruptive.
I have nothing against Ganguly the player being in the team, but Ganguly coming back as a test captain will most likely cause a lot of turmoil

    By Blogger Multy, at 16:22

  • oldmanblues, not I disagree or agree with you , but to mention a general trend in this blog. In your response to TC, you ask for statistical database of religion based terror attack etc. Do you seriously think that it is possible to get you that info? While being objective and being open to contrary point of views is OK, I think it is not fair to ask for concrete statistical, photographic & videographics evidence and what not. Again, to clarify and make it clear, I am not disagreeing or agreeing with your main point. Just an observation. This type of , 'do you have data to back up..show me evidence' kinda hard talk can be easily reversed to ask you the same question. Do you have enough evidence to counter the general perception among public at large, muslims are indeed not being more aggressive the world over with a lot muslim related hot spots the world over? Can you counter these perceptions?

  • Reporter asks Ganguly
Reporter: What is the capital city of India?

    SG: Calcuttta.

Reporter: No its New Delhi. You can verify it in books.. newpapers.. internet etc.. or ask anyone else..

SG: Books lie often.. On internet, lot of people lie.. people lie about my cricket achievements.. my current form. the number of wickets I took in duleep trophy.. etc.. I have met many liers.. these sources cant be trusted..

I am the most successful captain of India.. MY instincts say that capital city is Calcutta..

By Blogger Thanks Chappel, at 16:23

  • oldmanblues/TC,
"You say: just like Bengalis cant face the truth as far as SG is concerned."

This is fact. Look at Bengal CM. He sure is a representative of Bengal and we all know politicians wont say a thing if it wont benefit them. His open support for SG and all efforts to have SG back is not hidden from anyone. Do you need further example on Bengalis supporting SG? Go and stand anywhere in calcutta and state the fact about SG. You will be lynched.

    By Blogger J, at 16:23
