Seamy side up?

After Worma and Ruchir are done, there really is precious little to add -- and don't for a moment think I am complaining. :-) Gives me breathing space to catch up on work, which I want to finish ahead of schedule given there is a match on tonight.
Or is there? Called home this morning, and word out of Chennai (any Chennai-ites out there who could keep updating the rest of us on the weather situation?) is that it is raining, off and on; prospects are for more of the same.
You want to hope like hell the game doesn't get washed out -- a 5-game series now locked at 1-1 should be huge fun; a 4-game series that opens up a draw as one of the possibilites, not so much.
If the game is in fact played tonight, India's spin-strategy could go for a six; this amount of rain in Chennai will likely produce a nicely juiced up track. Be interesting to see how that reflects in the choice of bowling lineup, and whether India will consider adding one more seamer to the mix, either in the playing XI or as supersub. Thoughts, anyone?
Will meanwhile get back to work, and return later in the afternoon with updates.

  • Chances of Rain = 60%

I would include Karthik in the playing XI and have Sreesanth as the super sub. After 10-15 overs we will have a good idea about the nature of the pitch. If it is seaming and swinging then straight away get the supersub in.

  • yep..with the part timers esp Sehwag doing decent enough job, and with SA not the best players of spin Ind can swap a seamer for the second specialist spinner. I still think they may go with the extra batsman though.

  • i was hoping that the indian or the SA team would come to the chemplast stadium here to practise :-(

btw, it's 10:25 and although the rain has mellowed down to a drizzle, not one star is visible :(

  • "Worma" that was..
    Sorry about that ..

  • pankaj, no probs mate (I know the keys are adjacent ;-)...btw it would be interesting if the teams approach the game with D&L in mind. Esp during the chase. Can expect the entire kitchen sink thrown in the top order...

  • Even if the game gets underway, I hope that there are no further interruptions - can do without M/s Duckworth and Lewis being called in - invariably the undeserving team wins.

    By Blogger Gardhabh, at 12:06

  • actually it can also be JP in place of Karthik. Although dont see that as a good idea since Karthik is an attacking option and JP a defensive one...and not likely to use the helpful conditions as well as SreeSanth

  • since it's been raining for the past couple of days the outfield is gonna be pretty trashed.
any idea how good the drainage in madras is?

    By Blogger JD, at 12:13

  • JD .. the cricinfo article say a..

"We have equipment like the super sopper and all." The ground now has slopes to help the water drain unlike last year when the India-New Zealand one-dayer was called off due to waterlogging."

By Blogger Pankaj Tripathi, at 12:17

  • thx pankaj

  • Seems like RD is going with the same team with GG as the supersub.

Ofcourse, nothing stops him from changing the squad at the last moment.

  • I think this will be a rain shortened game..
and hence to be on the safe side,
I guess...the team will probably picked with the assumption that we will lose the toss..

Which means, we will be made to bat first..

Chasing is always better in a rain shortened game..

and so our bowling option should have yadav as the super sub with 3 seamers, 1 spinner and 6(sehwag, Tend, Dravid, Kaif, Yuvi, Raina) + 1(Keeper) batsmen in the main XI

Having an extra regular spinner is a gamble...But one way to work around it would be to include Yadav in the main XI(as the 6th batsman, instead of Raina) and have karthik as the super sub.

  • i am in chennai. the match might be washed out, this is what i feel. sun has not come out today. does not look like coming out tomorrow also. met department also predicted rain for next 2-3 days. looking at satelite pictures also gives a clue for more rains only. people staying in US (like prem), pls don't lose ur sleep for the match. i will update you tomorrow morning around 11am IST.

  • I looked at weather.com, the weather channel, the hour-by-hour forcast....looks like there will be rain right thru....so its better to look further

  • The present combination would do irrespective of we bat first or bowl first. If the track is going to support seam we dont need more than 3 seamers (IP,AA,RPS) to knock them off and would do well to use the extra bat in GG. If we bat first, Karthik is out since anyway not much support for spin in the 2nd Innings. If we bowl first then we have 3 seam + 2 spin +part timers and also extra bat when chasing.

  • hey there prem... Im here in chennai on vacation and it looks pretty bleak guys... its been raining almost non-stop here for the last 6 hrs or so...
Even if they have the pitch overed, I doubt if the outfield will be in good shape... I got tickets for the game and still have my fingers crossed...

By Blogger Jay Mo, at 13:37

  • I'll keep you guys posted on the chennai situation tomorrow am India time...

By Blogger Jay Mo, at 13:44

  • I would have Kaif as the sub and GG in the team.
I feel lends the team much more balance

    By Blogger Bala, at 13:48

  • Just read Smith's latest column on Sify.
This guy is funny - whines about the toss being the decisive factor in SA's defeat and then issues a standard "I'm not using that as an excuse" disclaimer -
what a sore loser - we should whip them 4-1/3-1

    By Blogger Jinendra, at 15:15

  • analyzer,
And then RSA coach Mickey Arthur goes onto say they will bat first if they win the toss in the next match-- suits me fine with the dew around.

    By Blogger Sahir, at 16:39

  • Smith and Mickey mouse may be pulling a fast one ... I am not so convinced that he will bat first should he win the toss.....

    By Blogger indCric, at 23:26

  • okay, so it bout 4 more hrs to go for the game here... the rain stopped a couple of hrs ago but its still gloomy... there might be some play after all if it doesnt rain any more...
