India vs SL - 2nd ODI - Open Thread

Seems like not many people are up for this one?...or maybe the alarms are set to go off anytime now ;-)

Chalo...see you all's sleepy faces in the thread...

  • worma - what is the exact time in IST for the match to start?

    By Blogger J, at 02:48

  • all pumped up.. revved up.. and waiting to go :)

    By Blogger SHRI, at 02:51

    8:30 AM BST

    By Blogger SHRI, at 02:52

  • Moved here from the "other" blog (forget which one, the Freddie one I think)....K-slice, regarding your counter-arguments about SG...

You still need to think about the likely disruptive influence his presence may have on the team

His bowling is also not as good as before...when was the last time he took a partnership-breaking wicket?

And his fielding has always been pathetic....a poor fielder has no place in today's game....name one poor fielder in Aus or SL...the top 2 one-day teams

By Blogger The Straighter Neo, at 02:52

  • Morning Worma,

Looks like the guys in the states are still sleeping. Do you know when the game starts?

    By Blogger BornDevil, at 02:57

  • ravi...yes lets forget SG for today...anyways tomorrow(after selection meeting tonight) thats *all* that we're gonna talk about ;-) LOL

    By Blogger worma, at 02:57

  • BTW, anybody here who is going yo watch it on SGStream ?

    By Blogger BornDevil, at 02:57

  • neo...go into the match page at cricinfo...its listed for 9am GMT :-)

    By Blogger worma, at 02:58

  • Ravi...the SG thing was part of a discussion that was ongoing, before worma requested a move over to this blog...sorry if it bothers you, but you needn't read or respond...after all, its going to be a sidelight for the day with the selection meeting taking place....any one know what time is the meeting?

By Blogger The Straighter Neo, at 02:59

  • Using sgstream first time ... bad interface and all that ... card already credited... the thing has launched media player but i showing some error (not sure if it is because the match has not yet started ) hope this thing works ...

    By Blogger BornDevil, at 03:00

  • worma...go into forthcoming live coverage at cricinfo, its listed at 8.30 GMT :) :)...and I am always the optimist....

By Blogger The Straighter Neo, at 03:01

  • neo..yes but click on the link from the forthcoming coverage :-)...chalo anyways...our debates here are not waiting for match start...are they ;-)

    By Blogger worma, at 03:04

  • Hey guys, badly looking for some assurance that sgstream works ...

    By Blogger BornDevil, at 03:07

  • hey...just to kick-off....RD said recently that experiments would continue.....any guesses on what's next one we can expect???

    By Blogger worma, at 03:07

  • This is Switzerland checking in. Still 2hrs to go for the match, 1100hrs local time!! Lots of work to do which I dont know how, once the match starts. The sun is out here. Morning coffee smells nice. All ready..

By Blogger Reverse Sweep, at 03:08

  • the more unexpected the better. May be Sehwag coming lower down

By Blogger Reverse Sweep, at 03:09

  • worma....a good idea would be to keep trying different folks from the tail-end at the #3 spot....perhaps AA today, JP in the next game, SG in the one after (oops, now where did that come from)....

By Blogger The Straighter Neo, at 03:10

  • reverse....you have sun there in swiss country??...oooh....*jealous* ;-)

btw....anyone bothered to check out the WI score against Queensland? 238/3 and Lara, Chanderpaul yet to play...hope rising again...optimism growing

    By Blogger worma, at 03:11

  • Yaeh the fog just cleard...-:))

By Blogger Reverse Sweep, at 03:12

  • reverse yeah thats one thing we can see sometime(I dare say 3rd match;-)...but also as neo said, I'm curious to see how they use JP today...maybe its his turn...out of all the good showers in recent times (he's been ok with limited chances) he's the one least 'experimented' upon

    By Blogger worma, at 03:13

  • ready with the red eye.. hoping that SL bat first.. I dont want to but would think may be 4 hr sleep will be good for help if that happens.. but heart says.. common.. Dravid as captain.. ought to see..

By Blogger Thanks Chappel, at 03:14

  • Yeah could be Yadav, could be Rao. Not much to with the bowling though

By Blogger Reverse Sweep, at 03:14

  • There was lot of talk on dew for this game. I have been hearing different things:
    1. Dew will juice up the pitch and be helpful for fast bowlers.
    2. It will make the outfield heavy and the ball wont race to the boundary as fast as it should.
    3. Spinners wont be able to grip the ball because it is wet.
    4. Pitch will play faster under lights

Can anyone tell which of these are really valid?
May be you people can add onto these.

    By Blogger siddhu, at 03:15

  • worma, based on the links below, one would think Gambhir might open today, and VS will be shunted down to #4 or 5 to slaughter the spinners...

"There was enough for the rumour mills to work over today, from Harbhajan Singh padding up first at the nets along with JP Yadav to Gautam Gambhir turning his arm over to bowl a few leg-breaks. Each raised the big question, What’s next on the menu? "

"Dravid explained Gambhir’s actions, saying he’d been drafted into the final 13 — which saw RP Singh and Suresh Raina excluded. That itself was open to many conclusions: Would Gambhir, a specialist opener, open? And if yes, with whom? Or was he a red herring"

"There wasn’t anything outrageous the batsmen tried, unlike the Indians where Virender Sehwag tried quite a few reverse sweeps and cheeky shots towards third-man against the spinners."

By Blogger The Straighter Neo, at 03:17

  • siddhu: add to it...ball will come nicely on to the bat...ball will be changed often

all of these seem valid to me.

    By Blogger worma, at 03:17

  • Zimbabwe President's XI 94
    North Zone 175/0 (58.0 ov)

Just tells what the value of SG's century in Zim and India's victory is really worth.

    By Blogger siddhu, at 03:18

  • siddhu, does the scoreline also tell you the value of SG's century in the Duleep trophy against North? :)

By Blogger The Straighter Neo, at 03:21

  • siddhu...as I posted above...WI is 238/3 against Queensland...so...should Aus now duely give a walk-over for the test series to WI?

    By Blogger worma, at 03:23

  • I think good performance is expected from international teams against local teams. If WI scores runs against QL, it is expected. But if they fail, it becomes news.

    By Blogger siddhu, at 03:26

  • neo thanks for the links....interesting indeed. Maybe Gambhir can open...esp if we chase big?...(he may be supersub in that case). Although I feel that we would go with same XII

    By Blogger worma, at 03:27

  • When does a team have to decide on its Super Sub? Before the toss or after the toss? If it is before the toss, doesn't it offer an unfair advantage to the captain winning the toss?

Marvan Atapattu's choice for super sub at Nagpur baffled me. He used a bowler as super sub and used him as a batsman. (Anyway all his decisions baffled me).

What do u thonk of using an allrounder as super sub?

    By Blogger SLFan, at 03:27

  • neo, I am just pointing to SG's chest thumping after scoring 100 against Zim.

The 100 against North Zone is much more valuable than the 100 against Zim.

    By Blogger siddhu, at 03:28

  • siddhu...you missed the point...what I meant was that this is not Zim team(certainly not the one which Ind played against, although the way their stars are running away, they may soon look like this ;-)..just as the Queensland team is not Aus team(and they have quite a few main and fringe players from Aus national squad)

    By Blogger worma, at 03:29

  • sifan, team of 12(including supersub) decided before the toss....what I am not sure of is if the teams are exchanged between captains before the toss....

By Blogger The Straighter Neo, at 03:32

  • neo...yep..they have to hand over team sheets at the toss (before the toss)...so a captain can change his mind about what to do on winning the toss

    By Blogger worma, at 03:34

  • worma...I am not sure what today's supersub strategy will be...its actually fun to analyze especially if you are into game theory...

I think GG will definitely play today, if not, why draft him into the 13? If he plays, he has to open, else why draft him in place of Raina?

Ideally India would want to bowl first, negating SL spinners (dew factor bowling second)...so in an ideal situation Karthik would be in the playing eleven, RD wins the toss, we bowl, MK gets subbed by GG....and we make a killing

But, then if we look at the SL strategy, if SL win toss, they will field first to utilize their spinners, in which case MK in the playing eleven becomes ineffective, and will need to replaced immediately with GG, with JP having to bowl a full quota in the second half..

Now, if we had RP Singh in the 13, then we could have gone with him as the Sub, GG in the playing eleven, chosen to bat after winning the toss (or be put in by SL) and gone hammer and tongs after the bowling, and still be in a superior position...

By Blogger The Straighter Neo, at 03:46

  • neo...yeah I once commented on my take on supersub....that was kind of derived from game theory...the matter of taking risk...and taking the right decisions mid-way...or at each point of time..weighing in pros and cons..

for example...your choice of Karthik is good...a 'positive' way of using supersub (as opposed to a 'safe' way which means put the allrounder there). Since India is looking to bowl first(I assume). So we go in with 5 bowlers and batting supersub. But, in this case, if we're forced to bat first...and our batting is not really doing great...then we need to keep taking stock after each wkt fall(in fact just before) to know just the right moment when we need to get that additional batsman in. Too early would mean and we loose the extra bowler(and we rue it esp if not many wkts fall after that) and too late would mean the additional batsman would also not be able to help!..so...tough times for captain..has to be on his toes all the time...coach becomes more 'actively' important now

and btw..in this above scenario an opening batsman as supersub is not much use...since if we're forced to bat first...and if we supersub him right from the start...then that means we were relying just on the toss for our supersub strategy to work

    By Blogger worma, at 03:54

  • My take - Gambhir as super sub
    GG (SS)
AA (could be a wild card SS)

    By Blogger MM, at 03:54

  • mm...you left Sreesanth out, I think he'll definitely play today...its a fast bowlers pitch, he's done well at Mohali...

By Blogger The Straighter Neo, at 03:55

  • nice analysis neo

    By Blogger BornDevil, at 03:55

  • Does sgstream show the half an hour before the match ?

    By Blogger BornDevil, at 03:57

  • which is why...I feel...if GG plays...then he would not be a supersub.

    By Blogger worma, at 03:59

  • worma, u'r right...subbing GG in straightaway doesn't make much sense...perhaps JP should be the supersub, with MK in the playing eleven, and if we bat first, we can bring in JP only per need, if it gets too late, stick with MK thru the inning, get him to bowl early, and if there's trouble, bring in JP to bowl the remainder of the quota...

By Blogger The Straighter Neo, at 04:01

  • I think SL will use the following team today

    Upul Tharanga
    Russel Arnold
    Upul Chandana/Dilhara Lokuhettige (SS)

    By Blogger SLFan, at 04:02

  • darn it, got up an hour early. match hasnt started!
    i was mis-led!

By Blogger Dhruv Deepak, at 04:04

  • thats right neo - Sreesant will certainly play. if GG plays then JP is out though I now think that GG will bring in the drinks

    By Blogger MM, at 04:06

  • San Jose checking in :)

    By Blogger Boom, at 04:07

  • anybody here on sgstream ?

    By Blogger BornDevil, at 04:08

  • Redmond checking in :)

    By Blogger BornDevil, at 04:09

  • We are all assuming here that the team winning the toss, will field first, mostly based on the Challenger results...take a look at history of international ODI's at Mohali...

"India have played five one-dayers at this venue, and lost only once. Although Sri Lanka have never played against India here, they have played at this venue once and the memories are happy - they thrashed Pakistan by more than hundred runs, having raked up 300-plus batting first in May 1997. Of India's four wins, three came batting first, one against Bangladesh batting second, while the one loss came when they batted first against Pakistan in 1996. However, this must be viewed with the caveat that in the recently concluded Challenger Trophy, the teams batting second won on all four occasions."

Also, at the WC03, in day-night games, where dew was likely to be an issue, teams chose to bat first, and gained an unfair advantage (Nehra v/s England, Anderson v/s Pak) bowling second with the ball fizzing around..of course, that was on SA pitches....

By Blogger The Straighter Neo, at 04:09

  • those watching...any signs of the toss????...

    By Blogger worma, at 04:12

  • Redmond checking in here too :-)))

Wasn't the game supposed to have started at 9 GMT? Or is Dalmiya stuck in a traffic jam....

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 04:16

  • willow has started some music. :-) but still not sure if there are 15 minutes or 45 minutes to go.

By Blogger Jaunty Quicksand, at 04:17

By Blogger Thanks Chappel, at 04:17

  • saurabh...its 9GMT...so 10BST...still 40+ minutes to go..no?..I hope you havent moved to winter time by yourself ;-)

    By Blogger worma, at 04:19

  • good that this early in day .. can find devils around :)
Cricket was always big in desh

By Blogger Pankaj Tripathi, at 04:19

  • Willow's website claims it starts in 12 minutes. Cricinfo claims it starts in 42 minutes I am guessing willow is going to show a "pitch analysis" and the pregame stuff first.

saurabh, yes, isn't it amazing how an experiment doomed for failure after the natwest thingy is now the rage in discussions around the place...

By Blogger Jaunty Quicksand, at 04:19

  • No Borndevil - watching some stupid show on Sony TV [using sportingstreams].

Note guys: 4545 is working, so if you cant' get on 545, try that.

By Blogger Pankaj Tripathi, at 04:22

  • Worma, I am in Italy today, so lost my sense of "Britishness". Feeling positive about life already :-)

Actually, I could never figure out when GMT/BST go different...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 04:22

  • Apparently SL has won the toss and have decided to bat. (www.cricbuzz.com)

    By Blogger SLFan, at 04:25

  • thats a good news..

By Blogger Thanks Chappel, at 04:26

  • this is not good.. will have to miss Indian batting part of match ... but anyway form history . that should be good for team .. thus cant complain

By Blogger Pankaj Tripathi, at 04:26

  • TC sorry .. I am more selfish :)

By Blogger Pankaj Tripathi, at 04:27

  • saurabh LOL...yep you can easily forget the gloom of Eng...esp out there in South :-)...small lesson on time zones coming up...apologies in advance folks ;-)...GMT is the standard time..so it *doesnt change* either in winter or summer...BST is, like rest of Europe, moving back and forth. So BST=GMT+1 in summer and BST=GMT in winter. (and time changes on last Sunday of Oct)

    By Blogger worma, at 04:27

  • Has the match started? Willow TV now gives the time as 2 AM PDT [5 AM EDT].

By Blogger FSN 2.2, at 04:29

By Blogger losing now, at 04:38

  • Sounds like the match might be coming on guys....on SS

By Blogger FSN 2.2, at 04:38

  • ok dravid goes with the recent results at mohali of team batting second winning it all. though i remember in 96 when SL had tanned the hides off the pakis batting first. all right guys lets hope for a 2-0 score after this match!

    By Blogger K-Slice, at 04:38

  • k-slice...no worries...let's wait and watch, any way folks here don't wish to discuss SG today...so let's leave it for tomorrow..

By Blogger The Straighter Neo, at 04:39

  • From cricinfo: Indian captain Rahul Dravid has won the toss and as expected elected to field first.

    By Blogger siddhu, at 04:40

  • saurabh,
trust me. my boss is a shade scarier than chappel. i had to lie through my teeth at times but i guess as long as i am still employed and have a decent bonus coming i really cant complain!!

    By Blogger K-Slice, at 04:40

  • Match to start in 20 minutes

    By Blogger ich_bin_moody, at 04:40

By Blogger The Straighter Neo, at 04:40

    By Blogger Adi, at 04:41

  • Dew or not...this is where the character of our guys chasing, will come to the fore. Lets keep our fingers and toes crossed guys -that Nagpur wasn't just a stroke of luck.

By Blogger FSN 2.2, at 04:41

  • Second important toss Rahul has won

    By Blogger ich_bin_moody, at 04:41

  • Looking fwd to some Sangakkara foreworks today. Hope it's a tall scoring game.

    But what's happening to Willow?

    By Blogger mustt_mustt, at 04:42

  • why do guys wear such friggin makeup?

By Blogger losing now, at 04:42

  • RD has taken the right decision instead of taking the safe decision. Since India has a very bad reputation of chasing.

    Way to go!

    By Blogger siddhu, at 04:42

  • guys
am i the only one who sees this or has our 152 run win actually changed the general atmosphere of the blog along with team india?
would be an interesting case study for anyone studying direct relation psychology!

    By Blogger K-Slice, at 04:42

  • reminds me of Telugu heros of old..NTR,ANR,Krishna

By Blogger losing now, at 04:42

  • Phony TV is still showing the liquid soap. Dude in a canary yellow shirt...and chappie in dire need of a shave are on screen. We are taking donations to buy new shirt and new 7 o clock ejtec razor blades....

By Blogger FSN 2.2, at 04:43

  • k-slice, see my post above about historical results of international ODI's at Mohali...teams batting first have done better...however, in this specific case, with dew likely to be a factor, the SL spinners get negated by having them bowl later...

By Blogger The Straighter Neo, at 04:43

  • Hold your horses guys - relatively lookable chick on screen now...

By Blogger FSN 2.2, at 04:44

  • losing now,
i agree. at times you could use a friggin chissel and a hammer to remove their faces. if someone slapped them they stand the chance of their faces cracking up!

    By Blogger K-Slice, at 04:44

  • Nope - spoke too soon. Camera zoomed in kind of close and I change my mind...

By Blogger FSN 2.2, at 04:44

  • teams anyone?

By Blogger losing now, at 04:44

  • Any idea who is the super-sub? What is the team?

    By Blogger siddhu, at 04:44

  • 260-280 is i guess chasable at mohali , anything more than that , dw or no dew is likely to put run rate pressure on us

    By Blogger Adi, at 04:45

  • k-slice.. LOL! remember the lipsticks these guys used to wear

By Blogger losing now, at 04:45

  • Pretty boy in canary yellow shirt is now at sleeveless aunty's house. Sleeveless aunty trying some histrionics...failing miserably.

By Blogger FSN 2.2, at 04:45

  • fiery,
in such casesone must have had the foresight of having invested in the one thing that makes even ugly chicks pretty:
a sturdy well made, hand crafted brown paper bag

  • Lol@losing now.

By Blogger FSN 2.2, at 04:53

  • interesting supersub..when bowling first?

By Blogger losing now, at 04:53

  • hmm... with India bowling ... AA is gonna open I gues.. JP yadav will get ot bowl some...
I doubt if we end up using SS atall unless AA does what he is good in doing ...giving runs, but may still not replaced.. wonder why we make SSanth as SS....

By Blogger Pankaj Tripathi, at 04:54

  • yeah...maybe bowl 1 guy out and bring in sree...

    By Blogger greg2rescue, at 04:54

  • i would think a bat would be supersub..what if you chase a high total?

By Blogger losing now, at 04:54

  • Got wrong on the super sub... bad. did they expect to lose the toss or what ?

    By Blogger indian, at 04:54

  • SL selection was better..

but still , dew factor puts us on the advantage..

By Blogger Thanks Chappel, at 04:55

  • i am outa here...got to watch each ball

    By Blogger greg2rescue, at 04:56

  • greg .. if you bowl one guy out .. why do you want to get sree in :)

By Blogger Pankaj Tripathi, at 04:56

  • chalo..game on TV now

By Blogger losing now, at 04:56

  • I think the supersub choice of RD is good one and safe. If India bowls first, there is no need to sub anyone. If India bowls second, he can use Kartik for a few overs and when the dew is heavy bring on Sreesanth.

    By Blogger siddhu, at 04:56

  • As some of you have pointed out, what sense is their in selecting Sree Santh as the supersub and electing to bowl? Are we planning on utilizing his superior batting skills in the latter half of the match? If we absolutely had to select Kartik in the starting XI, I would still have preferred Santh over Agarkar in the XI. Agarkar could then replace Santh for the chase. Now we are going to have Agarar bowling to Jayasuriya, with the restrictions in place-- big risk!

    By Blogger Sahir, at 04:57

  • lol: cricinfo has it that Upul chandana is in both the starting 11 and also is the super sub

    By Blogger getsrid, at 04:57

  • I think Sant as super sub was probably decided considering the possibility of losing the toss...no big deal. He can surely come in place of Agarkar now that we are bowling first

By Blogger Reverse Sweep, at 04:57

  • Here we go ...

    By Blogger BornDevil, at 04:58

  • sahir,
knowing AA he will get jayasuriya out with a fluke ball. i can see it already short ball, SJ pulls, leading edge, caught!!
call it wishfull thinking but right now with our "4 every over guaranteed AA" thats all i can hope for!

    By Blogger K-Slice, at 04:59

  • Dravid did indicate it is at a disadvantage that we had Sreesanth as the super sub since they won the toss. Sometimes you lose some when you win some.

    By Blogger getsrid, at 05:00

  • SL's supersub is interesting. If SL bat first, supersub can come in when SL bowls. But how much he can contribute because of dew is questionable.

If SL bat second, they can use their supersub to replace a bowler.

    By Blogger siddhu, at 05:00

  • OK . RD explains it. He picked SS as supersub thinking if they lose the toss..they will have gripping problems and will need MK

By Blogger losing now, at 05:00

  • Marvan Atapattu's reply to whether he would have fielde first:
    "Maybe, yes"
    What confidence!

    By Blogger Sahir, at 05:00

  • For those asking about SS as SS, did you hear Dravid? Apparently the SS pick was in the event India had to bowl second; as it is, the gamble didn't work and India has to bowl first. AA in particular with a huge responsibility -- leak runs early, and Lanka could run away to a big one.

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 05:00

  • Aaargh...when will shastri actually ASK a question?

By Blogger Jaunty Quicksand, at 05:00

  • never

By Blogger Thanks Chappel, at 05:01

  • losing now,
that's the explanation, but the result is that we are playing 11 against 12- our supersub will do nothing!

    By Blogger Sahir, at 05:01

  • Prem thats exactly what I guessed about SS as SS...

By Blogger Reverse Sweep, at 05:02

  • KS and SJ opening.

    By Blogger siddhu, at 05:02

  • sahir:
Well you have to decide before the toss. what wud u have done..given the dew situation. I am satisfied with RD explanation

By Blogger losing now, at 05:02

  • sahir thats always tha chance the team has to take. It works somestimes, sometimes it doesnt...who cares if you are good you should be able to adapt and deliver

By Blogger Reverse Sweep, at 05:03

  • losing now,
I would not have played the second spinner Karthik, period. SS would be in the starting lineup in his place and Gambhir would be the sub.

    By Blogger Sahir, at 05:04

  • Cricinfo says "There is a smattering of live grass on the pitch ".
Is this going to help fast bowlers.
Or is it dry grass only meant to hold the playing surface for 100 overs.

    By Blogger siddhu, at 05:04

  • Prem, Worma

Not sure about the super sub rules. Can SS can come in while SL is batting replacing a bowler who has completed his quota ?

    By Blogger Ananth, at 05:04

  • ONE DOWN !!!!

    By Blogger Akshay, at 05:04

  • jayasuriya is gone

    By Blogger getsrid, at 05:05

  • jaysurya out..

By Blogger Thanks Chappel, at 05:05

  • sidhu: that is grass rolled in to help bind the pitch, mate -- not the sort that will help fast bowlers

By Blogger Prem Panicker, at 05:05

  • out!

    By Blogger ilovecricket, at 05:05

  • JAYASURIYA OUT!!!!!!!!!

By Blogger FSN 2.2, at 05:05

  • GONE

    By Blogger Sahir, at 05:05

  • SJ is out!!

    By Blogger siddhu, at 05:05

  • wow! Good start!

    By Blogger ilovecricket, at 05:05

  • Sahir:
and if you lose toss..and bowl second ..SJ GONE!!!!

By Blogger losing now, at 05:05

  • RS ,
I dont think SS will replace AA by even if he plays from Srilanka , as the traditional Indian wisdom .. AA as batsman ..
    good start ..
    one down

By Blogger Pankaj Tripathi, at 05:05

  • wicket!
