Ind-SL Match5 - Open Thread

Update on Prem's status: As per my communication with him yesterday, he was still not in a position to sit up for the live comments during the match. But said he was hoping to be able to catch the live action, and if possible, go through our comments and post his thoughts on the main page intermittently.

Anyway...here's an open thread....pre-match discussions....and live thread for atleast start of the game.

  • Hmm...I'd like to see Rao be given more of a chance. He seems technically adept; just a little anxious. I wonder if they're trying to weed him out like they did Sarandeep Singh?

A few days ago, The Asian Age had published a list of players who'd played less than 10 matches under SG. Alarming: how quickly we forget the Avishkar Salvi's and the Tinu Yohannan's. Joginder Sharma, S.Sriram and Amit Mishra hardly got much of a chance. At the same time, we applaud SG for backing youngsters. Even Dinesh Mongia and Hemang Badani were not given a chance to settle down.

By Blogger Nikhil Pahwa, at 23:59

  • @ashvin
it is also interesting that while SGs backing of Sehwag, Harbhajan was duly praised, the way he destroyed promising careers like ramesh, badani was never mentioned. the way he always gave nehra and zaheer preferential treatment over agarkar is also forgotten.

    By Blogger worma, at 03:41

  • pathan, bhajji and tendulkar rested :((

    By Blogger Ridham, at 03:42

  • gu : yep right...didn't do the math quick enough LOL :-)

    By Blogger worma, at 03:45

  • n: SL have kep Mahroof as a cover up if they had lost the toss and were asked to bat first (which they didn't want to do). Mahroof is in ODI allrounder category and would have replaced a bowlers

    By Blogger worma, at 03:58

  • n: Who said SL planned to bat first? They've won the toss and chosen to field first.

    By Blogger worma, at 04:02

  • n: The follow the theory to chose the best possible balanced combination...and then plan for if things don't go their way (meaning they lose the toss). Thats *one* possible way of using a supersub

    By Blogger worma, at 04:05

  • n: Fernando has been their best pacer this series...if they didnt play him in XI then they are not going as per their own plan to bowl first!

    By Blogger worma, at 04:10

  • fernando .. doubts hariharns skills

By Blogger Pankaj Tripathi, at 04:11

    By Blogger worma, at 04:14

  • vincient and astle were doing good .. took a leaf out form indias book.. going at almost everything .. scored decent in wet outfield.. before lord indra decided for the pause..57 for 1 after loosing fleming in second ball.. only in this age you can watch two matches from a foreign land and none on TV..
    LUCKY for VS

By Blogger Pankaj Tripathi, at 04:18

By Blogger Pankaj Tripathi, at 04:20

  • interesting things to note would be...(a) can GG keep his head...I've observed him overdo it at times (most recently in Zim)...and (b)Can Sehwag play the senior partner in the partnership...

  • and sahir...he didn't try even a fidget of the foot!...now I'm strating to get worried about his test form...because its not as if this match he was trying to bash everything..still couldn't last

    By Blogger worma, at 04:37

  • both: don't forget we visit Pak before poms come down here :-)

    cynic: pitched on leg

    By Blogger worma, at 04:41

  • sahir: in fact it pitched on leg, and straightened...so probably hitting leg. The only doubt was that did it straighten enough to have missed leg...close call...but out I would think. Another day ump could have given benefit of doubt to batsman without getting flayed

    By Blogger worma, at 04:43

  • I think they should have sent Yuv anyway ahead of Dhoni...he's a psychological big fish atleast in this series...and Gambhir was anyway doing the acceleration job. Anyways...not you're right sahir, they'll sober up a bit...yuv is a slow starter anyways

    By Blogger worma, at 04:48

  • losing now and sahir: well Dhoni didn't give me time enough to comment with foresight, did he? :-))

And about right left combo, yes its often overdone. And anyway Rao was an option instead of Yuv. Although I still feel Yuv was best, since he needs a good score..and afterall this is the match tailor-made for him and few others to take big responsibility

    By Blogger worma, at 04:53

  • n: Zoysa off the field..probably injured

    By Blogger worma, at 04:58

  • someone needs to go tell yuvraj that this is not test cricket

    By Blogger Ruchi's, at 04:58

  • losing now : RD *will* come next....and hope your 'quickly' is not needed ;-)

    By Blogger worma, at 04:58

  • and i can somehow see yuvraj trying to force a square cut and give a catch to sangkarra, will happen so if he continues in this vein

    By Blogger Ruchi's, at 05:00

  • chalo finally 4

    By Blogger Ruchi's, at 05:03

  • arre bhai yeh zinda toh hai na

    By Blogger Ruchi's, at 05:04

  • if yuvraj doesn't give the strike to gg, the ahmedabad crowd is going to beat him up

    By Blogger Ruchi's, at 05:05

  • finally middles something

    By Blogger Ruchi's, at 05:07

  • Guys, don't be so short-sighted while judging Yuvi. Judge a player over a period of time.

By Blogger Manish Amde, at 05:07

  • YS will go to Kim Sharma's house

    By Blogger Ruchi's, at 05:11

  • god, some people need to stop using crude language

    By Blogger Ruchi's, at 05:13

  • 280

    By Blogger Ruchi's, at 05:16

  • GU, there is no point in answering to you as you are responding like the normal Indian public. The boos did Yuvi in as much as SriLankan bowling.

I am not a big fan(infact not a fan) of Yuvi but I think he is one of our better bets playing away.

Cool guy, Yuvi has done well in Australia. Played a crucial role in the Pak ODI in WC. Played a very god hundred in Pak when the whole team failed. I won't start talking about Natwest and his debut against Aus in Nairobi....

Guys who ridiculed AA few matches back have got a new scapegoat.

I think he should be given a few more chances to see if he can get his form back. Aussis did the same with Damien Martyn 2 years back. Else we have enough people waiting to fill in his boots.

By Blogger Manish Amde, at 05:16

  • go dawgs: its looks bad for the team in the sense that it would affect the scoring of even GG now..atleast for a while...and yes Yuv does pick up later on. Lets see if GG still keeps taking risks...RD would be guiding him with his approach I guess. Maybe for powerplays he still keeps hitting

    By Blogger worma, at 05:17

  • GU, HS is also SG's find. What about him ? Don't try and connect irrelevant things.

By Blogger Manish Amde, at 05:19

  • sahir,
    vr, sr, aa
we have a lot more batters

    By Blogger Ruchi's, at 05:19

  • Cool Guy, I am big fan of VVS but I think he is not good for the Indian team.

    Reasons :
+ slow runner between wickets putting pressure on other batsmen
+ cannot accelerate in the end so the only position he can bat is #3 reducing flexibility which is the strenght of the current side,
+ amazing catcher but very weak arm and slow on the ground. the same reason Kumble and Saurav's return would be detrimental to the whole outlook of the side.

By Blogger Manish Amde, at 05:24

  • go dawgs: Unfortunately this match we cannot afford to just 'see off' Murali....at some stage someone would need to score a few off him. Last match Rao (and Raina, Dhoni?) did that...lets see how it goes today. Gambhir gets his 50...playing well...hasnt let the pressure get to him so far

    By Blogger worma, at 05:29

  • go dawgs: yep probably less risk against Murali for now. Yeah GG offside is very good...a bit of Jayasurya also in those leant-back cuts

    By Blogger worma, at 05:38

  • RD unable get Murali away.

    By Blogger Crick_Love, at 06:06

  • Murali 5-1-14-0..that with 3 of 21 of YS have reduced a 300+ score to 260+ now. With no MSD in the end, you can forget booming 6s from 45-50. Ind need to discover some new six hitting talent today.

    By Blogger Crick_Love, at 06:08

  • RD is generally ok against other bowlers..but against Murali he has not done anything..37 of 63 even with 3 quick wickets is not a great inning considering that it is falt A'bad.

    By Blogger Crick_Love, at 06:10

  • GG is not intimidated by Murali and I like that it is a good sign. He has made runs by the bucket (unlike YS) in domestic cricket and generally you can not do that unless u play spin decent.

    By Blogger Crick_Love, at 06:13

  • I think...the score looks like atleast 20 short of what is reqd and 300+ looks tough unless some big overs are in the offing.

    By Blogger Crick_Love, at 06:23

  • GG....man..he saved RD of blushes..glorious 100

    By Blogger Crick_Love, at 06:29

  • The final score depends on the future of India batting.. YVR and SR.

    By Blogger ______, at 06:35

  • RD has done his job....I think YR and SR can accelerate....so India can look at reaching 300....the only thing to avoid is both getting out together

    By Blogger worma, at 06:36

  • Then why did atapattu had to bring in maharoof for Zoysa after just 5 overs though he had picked up 2 wickets

    By Blogger ______, at 06:36

  • wow great straight shot... RD at his best as always trying to up the rate later in his innings with beautiful shots

    By Blogger ______, at 06:38

  • Mahroof..shd be cleaned out in this over....15 reqd of him now

    By Blogger Crick_Love, at 06:38

  • YR must be happy facing Mahroof..he hit hit for 4s and 6s at Pune.

    By Blogger Crick_Love, at 06:41

  • 200 in 37 overs is good and well to cross 300 but again depends on the next batsmen in

    By Blogger ______, at 06:42

  • YR has to move off the blocks..

    By Blogger Crick_Love, at 06:45

  • good time for SL to take a wicket. have to see how MA will handle in this game to restrict IND

    By Blogger ______, at 06:45

  • hey.. cmon SJ. we want more of them

    By Blogger ______, at 06:47

  • This comment has been removed by a blog administrator.

    By Blogger Crick_Love, at 06:48

  • Target it..... 10 off each over from now on. go IND go

    By Blogger ______, at 06:49

  • hmmm YR goes

    By Blogger Crick_Love, at 06:50

  • with just SR to come..AA will get to bat today..the Lords man has to deliver the big hits today.

    By Blogger Crick_Love, at 06:51

  • Hey............... TO ALL
    NOTICED anyone.
The site has crossed 400,000 visits.
    CONGRATS Prem.

    By Blogger ______, at 06:52

  • FM two wkts..just 9..hmmm ..cricket is a great leveller..MSD will agree with that

    By Blogger Crick_Love, at 06:54

  • This Rao should be chucked. Bloody useless fellow. Can't perform against Mahacrap on a belter. AWFUL. No place for losers like him IN THIS WINNING TEAM!

    By Blogger i, at 06:55

  • SR looks cool so far..he has to face the bulk of the 12 left off Murali

    By Blogger Crick_Love, at 06:57

  • FM 2 dot balls

    By Blogger Crick_Love, at 06:58

  • lukkha, past history has no place. You have to perform on a daily basis. And you can't compare Dhoni (183 etc) with Rao's insipid 30 something. Look at Raina. That is the way to play. Rao, I repeat, has no place in the one day game. Useless ass.

    By Blogger i, at 06:59

  • Still target 10 off each over
RD and SR.. go for the kill

    By Blogger ______, at 06:59

  • and I forgot to say MSD keeps wickets too. VS can win you a game on his own. What can Rao do other than get out to the likes of Mahacrap. Chuck the Clucker!

    By Blogger i, at 07:00

  • Mahacrap picks 3......hmm

    By Blogger Crick_Love, at 07:01

  • SR trying to be too smart....too early I would think..unless thats what RD had asked him to do

    By Blogger worma, at 07:01

  • Why is Rao a good addition. What has he done in all this time he has been playing. Bring Rayadu or that blazer from Challernger trophy. Thankfully, he will be out when MK comes in. Rao ko jalao!

    By Blogger i, at 07:02

  • jiet, whats with ump??

    By Blogger worma, at 07:02

  • Lukkha you can't speculate on what might have happened. It could also have been that but for Rao we might have got to the target sooner with MSD and Raina. What a loser this Rao is. Bring MK.

    By Blogger i, at 07:03

  • whats happening.. just 3 runs at this stage. have to compensate for that

    By Blogger ______, at 07:05

  • Raina scored at more than a run a ball. Rao wasted three. Also Raina is 18 and a brilliant fielder - he will make up for his runs by his fielding. Like MK. Rao doesn't do squat other than try and look like Gundappa.

Only performers should be in this great team. Cluckers like Rao make my man RD look bad.

    By Blogger i, at 07:06

  • jiet...yeah it was quick allright :-)...probably helped by the fact that this lefty shuffled enough to be almost in a right handers position ;-)

    By Blogger worma, at 07:06

  • coolguy I wasn't the one who started speculating - scroll up and see it was Lukkha.

    By Blogger i, at 07:07

  • SJ will be off. MM or CV to return next over. MFM has one more to go

    By Blogger ______, at 07:09

  • why r they not using the supersub yadav...in place of SS..if at all he is useful..it is now.

    By Blogger Crick_Love, at 07:10

  • lukkha FYI AA is in team as a bowler first. Chuck him if he doesn't perform there. Dig? And he shouldn't even be batting if Clucker Rao had not messed it up. Get some logic man.

    By Blogger i, at 07:10

  • what is happening here. we are seeing the same old great indian fall. what happened to the NEW TEAM INDIA

    By Blogger ______, at 07:11

  • ilovecricket...one more quick wkt and they will.....still trying to gamble and see if they can do without losing a bowler

    By Blogger worma, at 07:11

  • Karthik had scored a 90 odd for Railways recently..but he has not lived upto his potential in int.level

    By Blogger Crick_Love, at 07:12

  • MK is a stupid with the bat

    By Blogger ______, at 07:12

  • __________ it is all because we carry non-performers like Rao still. Bloody ass. He role is that of a steady player, but noooo - he has to act like a cowboy - "I (Rao) shall score a blistering fifty" . What an idiot.

    By Blogger i, at 07:12

  • 1 off that Murali over soi far..Murali to Murali..Karthik is foxed...

    By Blogger Crick_Love, at 07:13

  • MK is a great fielder. Makes up for his sometimes shoddy batting. A.k.a Jonty.

    By Blogger i, at 07:13

  • is it going to be MOM-MFM

    By Blogger ______, at 07:13

  • Rao had enough time to play himself in and then blast - he obviously does not have the talent to start blasting from ball one. What a waste to the public's time to have to see a slow-mo-here-I-go Rao.

    By Blogger i, at 07:15

  • 50 runs off last 9 overs..!!!!!!!!!!!!

    By Blogger Crick_Love, at 07:16

  • i... if you had observed MK over the years, you wouldn't have said that. he is a waste in int. cricket except for his 2/3 bowling spells till now

    By Blogger ______, at 07:16

  • i, the point at which Rao came in, India was not looking to be cautious....they were still pretty comfortable then..looking at 300 and beyond...hence his brief was probably to try and accelerate....not sure if it would have been same for raina

    By Blogger worma, at 07:17

  • Kartik is not a big hitter..and it is going to be 260 at best..

    By Blogger Crick_Love, at 07:17

  • Jiet - RD has shown that he can play as fast as the best. Rao seems incapable of that. In ODIs he is a lump.

Get over it, what do you mean get over it. As a member of a great cricket loving country as India - I have to find a scapegoat and then hang, draw and quarter him to help get over my sense of loss. Rao is my goat for the day, and by the looks of him will fulfill the role for some time.

    By Blogger i, at 07:18

  • MK...killing with useless batting,,

    By Blogger Crick_Love, at 07:18

  • RD if he wd been fluent had a chance to knock off a 100..but he looks to be too tired to do anything..

    By Blogger Crick_Love, at 07:19

  • ________ FYI MK = Kaif, not Kartik. Dig?

Worma, if anybody, I would have thought you would spot when a tongue is firmly planted in one's cheek. Capisch?

    By Blogger i, at 07:20

  • got it i.... see to yourself. MK is a waste. and whats is that scorecard. reminds one of yesteryears. just two scores of note.
And now whats happening to RD.. dots at this stage. mentally tough indian team !!!!

    By Blogger ______, at 07:21

  • i, LOL for choice of goat ;-)...

    By Blogger worma, at 07:21

  • MK 2 from 9....what a messy guy ..Sardar wd hv atleast tried some big hits..

    By Blogger Crick_Love, at 07:21

  • i, yeah my bad early on...bad day here :-))

    By Blogger worma, at 07:22

  • stupid i.... i pity you
and then... mind your language man.

    By Blogger ______, at 07:23

  • MK crap is unable to get that single even..

    By Blogger Crick_Love, at 07:23

  • MiK...... 2 off 9 at this stage.
now i think i will be happy.. what say

    By Blogger ______, at 07:25

  • ______ whats with you man. Don't abuse me if your man Rao can't perform. Perhaps you need to get a life.

    By Blogger i, at 07:26

  • RD must go for his century

    By Blogger ______, at 07:27

  • MK can not even run...hmmm

    By Blogger Crick_Love, at 07:27

  • 18 balls..15 to get for RD,,,much depends on whether MK can somehow give the strike

    By Blogger Crick_Love, at 07:29

  • 250 in 47..... can IND make it to 280 atleast. its all in RDs hands now

    By Blogger ______, at 07:29

  • Atappattu had brain cramps..removes FM

    By Blogger Crick_Love, at 07:30

  • not only Arunlal..except RS and to some extent Siva...the rest are a worst bunch

    By Blogger Crick_Love, at 07:32

  • RD should have got a runner...he would need to be on field later as well..this might be a tense match

and coolguy, he can go off...for couple of overs....although Ponting may not be knowing that ;-)

    By Blogger worma, at 07:32

  • Gee,that run out attempt was funny

    By Blogger Toney, at 07:33

  • MK is a messy chap..he is so out of touch with the bat.

    By Blogger Crick_Love, at 07:34

  • can we cross 285 ?

    By Blogger ______, at 07:35

  • suraj, am I? No diea why that is so. I think yacrik said the other day that the feeds we get are about 30-45 secs late from the live pics in INdia

  • Deepak you are such a joy, and with an insight to kill for.

With statements like "350 will be hard to defend" you can give Jay Leno a run for his money.

  • Ashvin,

The former. Glad you spotted it.
I only insult people I know. Then they become people I don't know.

  • jiet, yeah saw that...a bit strange that Udal didn't bowl...looks like he wont figure in the starting lineup? Collingwood as the fifth bowler and probably play an extra batsman?

    By Blogger worma, at 08:00

  • jiet, yep..no doubt their batting is not as good as the team overall is (in its current status). Almost all of them are untested in these conditions...and even otherwise I dont think they are great. They threw away so many good oppurtunities in Ashes as well...almost every match

    By Blogger worma, at 08:19

  • jiet...yeah but a bit of doubt on the capability of some of the players :-)...not sure what if Fletcher can help there. But anyway, their failure in practise matches has made the prospect more exciting. Btw, what happened to Pak..I thought they announced that Shoaib and Mushy would play the practise matches?

  • indcric yeah he seems quick.

nilcritz: And I was wondering if its time for me to take a break ;-)...surely hazy pic....looks like cloud cover 'on' the ground

jiet: LOL..yeah one more 'no-show' from Shoaib...wonder if they want to keep his status as a surprise
