Super Test - Day 1

Alright, here we go. The Super Test is about to begin shortly. The weather is expected to play a huge role in this 6 day test which is a shame. With the extra time for the World XI to acclimatize in Sydney, I hope to see a better contest. After the debacle in the ODI series, the players should be charged up to give the Aussies a fight.

Graem Smith's choice of the final eleven was expected with Inzamam finding a position in it. With the ommision of Shaun Pollock, the bowling will be spearheaded by Harmison and Flintoff with Kallis as the third seamer. South Africa has not had spinners of the capability of Vettori and Murali and Smith will be in unchartered territory as far as manning them is concerned.

These are the lineups:
Australia 1 Justin Langer, 2 Matthew Hayden, 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Clarke, 5 Simon Katich, 6 Shane Watson, 7 Adam Gilchrist (wk), 8 Shane Warne, 9 Brett Lee, 10 Glenn McGrath, 11 Stuart MacGill, 12 Brad Hodge.

World XI 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Virender Sehwag, 3 Rahul Dravid, 4 Inzamam-ul-Haq, 5 Brian Lara, 6 Jacques Kallis, 7 Andrew Flintoff, 8 Mark Boucher, 9 Daniel Vettori, 10 Steve Harmison, 11 Muttiah Muralitharan.

  • Hmm...I would have preferred they drop Kallis and keep Pollock.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 20:07

  • Same thing here, clanzu. Pollock is not bad with the bat at all and miles ahead of the current bowler in Kallis. I would have preferred Inzi out too, in a way. It would have been nice to see Inzi and Akhtar spending time on the sidelines together. 6 days is a long time

    By Blogger Toney, at 20:09

  • Aussies win the toss and bat, expected.

Wow, that was harder than we thought. Completly unplugging GadgetMadness from our old hosting company and plugging into Liquid Web was rough, but Liquid Web's fantastic support was just a phone call away to ...

  • What I'd like to happen in this test match :

    - Hayden to fall cheaply in both innings so the Aussie selectors realise their myopic vision.

    - Shane Watson to be hammered around the park and not make a contribution with the bat. That will shut all this premature talk about him being the next Freddie.

    - Dravid & Lara to have a 250 run partnership with both scoring 100's.

    - Lastly but most importantly...World XI to beat these arrogant Aussies and win the Super Series.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 20:21

  • toney: Come on man. partisanship aside. I think it is unfair to drop Inzi. I would drop Lara or even Sehwag before dropping Inzi. Frankly, Inzi should have been in the OD squad instead of kallis.

By Blogger losing now, at 20:21

  • What the hell is it with Australia and winning the toss..They won all the tosses in the ODI's and now this?

    By Blogger ilovecricket, at 20:21

  • the fast bowling attack looks weak. Harmison and Flintoff..with kallis (in the world xi we could not fit in -on form -Shane bond). Lookslike WWXI will rely on MM and DV to win this for them. Well, good toss for Aussies to win.. batting on a turning truck in the later stages would have been very tricky.

By Blogger losing now, at 20:25

  • losing now, the Inzi part was in jest, thinking about his close friendship with Akhtar.
And I have this stinking feeling that the Aussies will pummel the WXI.

    By Blogger Toney, at 20:27

  • wow..the blog poll overwhelmingly supporting Dravid and for us to move on! Glad those still wanting SG are in a very miniscule minority.

By Blogger losing now, at 20:27

  • depends on who voted too :)

    By Blogger Toney, at 20:28

  • toney:
I agree.. WXI will lose. They have gone for batting ..and you do not win tests till you take 20 wickets. No strike bowlers!!

By Blogger losing now, at 20:29

  • where r u toney?

By Blogger losing now, at 20:29

  • r u watching on telly..i'm in US watching on Dish network..lawrie and manjrekar on

By Blogger losing now, at 20:33

  • Wow didn't expect Harmison to strike so early.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 20:34

  • inswinging yorkers!!

By Blogger losing now, at 20:34

  • good riddance....and now Hayden's turn

    By Blogger ilovecricket, at 20:35

  • losing now, I am here, was restarting my PC

    By Blogger Toney, at 20:35

  • Inzi should have been in ODI team ahead of Dravid, Kallis and Sehwag..

I would give him a test spot too..

Shoiab akhtar didn't belong to any side..

Shane bond should have been in both teams..

By Blogger Thanks Chappel, at 20:36

  • and missed Langer's dismissal!! Anyhow, cant understand what use 6-7 batsman are going to do, unless the WXI think they can bat the Aussies out of it and then Murali can weave his web

    By Blogger Toney, at 20:36

  • Toney: where .. which part of the world.
That was an incredinle over from Harmison.

By Blogger losing now, at 20:37

  • tc, I think Bond was out injured when the selection happened. At least, they could have chosen Pollock instead of Kallis

    By Blogger Toney, at 20:37

  • sangakara should have beeen in test team too..

By Blogger Thanks Chappel, at 20:37

  • losing now, in White Plains, NY

    By Blogger Toney, at 20:37

  • close one!! Hayden .. ball moving in the air

  • toney : watching on TV or computer. Anyway, i am in phx,az

By Blogger losing now, at 20:39

  • on computer, sportingstreams

    By Blogger Toney, at 20:39

  • how much on sporting streams. i paid 69.99 on Dish for the entire super series

By Blogger losing now, at 20:39

  • sheesh, ss requires a monthly 7-8$ membership!!
And they cover most of the cricket around the world plus soccer of all kinds :) Switch over, dont waste money on Dish

    By Blogger Toney, at 20:41

  • yep, bond + sangakarra .. instead of kallis + boucher would have been the killer combination

By Blogger losing now, at 20:42

  • sorry, ss does all this at 7 $, no extra cost for watching each match

    By Blogger Toney, at 20:42

  • what a beauty.. howdid ponting survive that

By Blogger losing now, at 20:42

  • toney howz the webcast any buffering ?

    By Blogger DesiChap, at 20:42

  • so far very good quality. And I have never experienced problems except for Ashes T4 and 5 when the traffic was unbelievable high

    By Blogger Toney, at 20:44

  • toney: really, is this some kind of "bootleg" stuff. Are they buying rights for this. Because even Willow is charging $40 odd for the series. Will they do the IND/SL&SA too?

By Blogger losing now, at 20:44

  • maybe the players found Pollock's captaincy annoying, so they dropped him to shut him up.

    By Blogger roublen, at 20:44

  • losing now, no guarantee of any matches. They apparently "find" streams which they relay. How it works is: once they find a link, members send in a request to an automated email address and they send back the link. The details in how to email, what to do with the link they give etc are provided on their site

    By Blogger Toney, at 20:46

  • Pointing .. beaten again .. 3rd time. 2 by SH and 1 by AF. He is living a charmed life

By Blogger losing now, at 20:47

  • but going by previous history, they should have Ind-SA, Ind-SL, definitely Ind-Eng.

    By Blogger Toney, at 20:47

  • I guess the "find" is "legal" ;-)
    Very interesting.
Do they typically "find" all the matches?

By Blogger losing now, at 20:49

  • hayden beaten too! under edge. Good start this. I love test cricket man!!

By Blogger losing now, at 20:50

  • Indian captain on Forward Short-leg !!

By Blogger losing now, at 20:51

  • losing now, test cricket is indeed something else. My best series so far, our last one in Aus, paid the whole sum on willow, worth every penny
And abt the find beign legal, no comments

    By Blogger Toney, at 20:53

  • dravid at short leg ??? whats that about?

    By Blogger SHRI, at 20:53

  • toney..whats the url? Ponting counter attacking

By Blogger losing now, at 20:54

  • yeah.. I mean RD is the best fielder in the slip per today.. All these guys(Aussies) are dropping sitters.. so are english..

I havent seen RD dropping anything in slips..

    But he is team man..
Inzi at forward short leg would havee been funny..

By Blogger Thanks Chappel, at 20:54

  • u bet toney.. was the best birthday present i ever got...although after the first day at brisbane i was not so sure

  • see you guys in a bit, dinner time

    By Blogger Toney, at 21:11

  • Here is where the World XI will falter...keeping up the pressure.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 21:12

  • yep, pressure gone.. no penetrating bowler...with new ball...except Harmison looked threatening in the first 3. No support on the other end though

By Blogger losing now, at 21:20

  • is that upstate ny toney?

    By Blogger SHRI, at 21:31

  • toney, r u getting SS ?

By Blogger losing now, at 22:14

  • found this interesting site on murali. check it out. He's not a chucker.

    By Blogger roublen, at 22:14

  • just wondering why rahul is not standing at 1st slip for murali. thought he is the best available choice in the world XI. also, inzi is standing at backward point. cant understand why they made this guy smith as the captain.

    By Blogger blueboy, at 22:32

  • shri, its rockland county, (airmont), not sure what upstate is, frankly.

    By Blogger Toney, at 22:59

  • THose who are using ss, is the sound coming in just a bit delayed than the pics?

    By Blogger Toney, at 23:00

  • toney if you are talking about white plains, yes it's upstate, anything north of westchester country (north bronx) is considered upstate.

By Blogger Ruchi Shah, at 23:02

  • toney, not really

    By Blogger roublen, at 23:04

  • roublen, u mean sound? Try looking for this problem when they show the commentators or someone in the studio talking

    By Blogger Toney, at 23:14

  • ruchi, then definitely, I am in upstate NY

    By Blogger Toney, at 23:14

  • Wish Sangakarra was there, no byes there then

    By Blogger Toney, at 23:18

  • why on earth Boucher is in the team ahead of Sangakkara? This guy was even dropped from SA team sometime back. I just can't believe it.

    By Blogger Jai, at 23:19

  • probably going by sttaitstics alone, Boucher is ahead of Sangakara. But his exp against Murali as well as his batting skills should have ensured KS a place

    By Blogger Toney, at 23:20

  • ss is giving trouble once again

    By Blogger Jai, at 23:31

  • yeah ss does not seem to be reliable. I think the problem will only worsen as more people get on board. I am pretty sure it is unofficial and at some point they may get into trouble u would think. Anyway, plan to enjoy it while it lasts :)

By Blogger Ashvin Iyengar, at 23:40

  • looks like all the mods are asleep there

    By Blogger Toney, at 23:40

    By Blogger Toney, at 23:47

    By Blogger Toney, at 23:49

  • lets throw some mashed aloos at inzi

By Blogger Ruchi Shah, at 23:53

  • the boundaries at SCG arent well protected for that

    By Blogger Toney, at 23:56

  • hayden is another right-handed lefty. but he doesn't seem ambidextrous

    By Blogger roublen, at 23:57

  • dont think most are. In fact, SRT seemed to be the only ambidextrous guy we knew of

    By Blogger Toney, at 23:58

  • clarke gone.. vettori strikes

By Blogger losing now, at 00:21

  • First class free audio coverage on radio australia.Just go to www.abc.net.au/cricket and follow the link.jim maxwell, geoff lawson and now the trinidad Commentator Fazeer Mohammed

By Blogger Nearly Man, at 00:30

  • Thanks a lot for that info, nearlyman. Great indeed

    By Blogger Krishna, at 00:47

  • and what fantastic commentary there too.. Jim Maxwell rocks...Peter Roebuck there too.

By Blogger Dark Nights, at 00:48

  • sanjay manjrekar's dumb comment about senior players in the sub-continent being superstitious about numbers and not batting in certain positions b/c they did not score runs in that position - what a dumbass. His loser stupid mentality paints the picture of the thinking of our team during his time

    By Blogger MM, at 00:57

  • Gilchrist playing beautifully - looks good for 3 figures if he doesnt do anything rash.

By Blogger Dark Nights, at 01:00

  • Hayden dropped by Boucher off Murali. Will that be costly ?

    By Blogger Ananth, at 01:18

  • It was actually Dravid's catch. How costly it will be - time and how much he scores subsequently will tell. Hayden seems to be bracing himself up for a big one.

By Blogger Dark Nights, at 01:32

  • manjrekar is a bloody fool. i dont know why ppl think he is a great thinker of the game--he certainly doesnt articulate it.
his commentary is boring and certainly not insightful. his professed knowledge of everything tendulkar is just plain sorry. I dont know what he is doing commentating for the Super Series. Id rather have had even Navjot Sidhu

By Blogger Dhruv Deepak, at 01:33

  • the radio stream is like 20 seconds ahead of sportingstreams. made me dizzy

    By Blogger roublen, at 01:33

  • Th reason Roublen is because SS is taking the Sky feed- so there is a lag.

By Blogger Dark Nights, at 01:35

  • if you guys are watching the broadcast they showed an ultramotion clip of murali bowling. he isnt chucking

By Blogger Dhruv Deepak, at 01:37

  • Amazing. Aleem Dar signing autographs just outside the boundary line and that too many of them. :)

    By Blogger Jai, at 01:47

  • Hayden out on nelson.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 02:11

  • India team announced...ZK and SG out

    By Blogger @mit, at 02:26

    By Blogger Kh0Pdi, at 02:28

  • Rahul Dravid (captain), Sachin Tendulkar, Yuvraj Singh, Venugopal Rao, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni (wk), Harbhajan Singh, Murali Kartik, Irfan Pathan, Ajit Agarkar, JP Yadav, Sreesanth, RP Singh, Gautam Gambhir.

Kaif and Ganguly may be considered after the first two games if they recover from the injuries

    By Blogger Jiet, at 02:30

  • thanks, jiet

    By Blogger Kh0Pdi, at 02:33

  • btw is sehwag dropped too?

    By Blogger Kh0Pdi, at 02:35

  • Apparently...Gambhir in his place, then

    By Blogger Jiet, at 02:37

  • no.. here is the team from ci..
Rahul Dravid (captain), Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Yuvraj Singh, Venugopal Rao, Suresh Raina, MS Dhoni (wk), Harbhajan Singh, Murali Kartik, Irfan Pathan, Ajit Agarkar, JP Yadav, S Sreesanth, RP Singh, Gautam Gambhir.

By Blogger losing now, at 02:39

  • it seems ZK has been asked to show that he can be consistent - so back to domestic circuit.
These are comments from Headlines Today TV prog
Has Krishnaswamy as the sports expert

    By Blogger cricketmaniac, at 02:40

  • Sresanth is in...he is 23 and I think it is a good call.

    By Blogger Jiet, at 02:41

  • Also, Lax, ZK and LB are out. What does LAx has to do to get into 15!

By Blogger losing now, at 02:41

  • the team is only for the first 2 ODIs

    By Blogger cricketmaniac, at 02:41

  • gilly, hayden show

By Blogger losing now, at 02:42

  • Lax has to show that he can run between the wickets and field.

    By Blogger Jiet, at 02:42

  • 15 players for 2 ODIs.. interesting. with options for SG and MK

By Blogger losing now, at 02:43

  • I think it is th end of the road for VVS in ODIs. It appears he does not figure in the scheme of things, even if he scores 200!!!

    By Blogger cricketmaniac, at 02:44

  • screw laxman he doesnt fit in the team. good stance taken by the bcci finally. you have venu, kaif and dravid to bat solidly. good enough for me

By Blogger Dhruv Deepak, at 02:45

  • dhruv - totally agree w/you re: manjrekar. he has a loser attitude is only interested in individual averages and crap like that. Thankfully this kind of mentality is no longer making its way to the Indian team.

why has Sehwag been dropped from the ODI team ??

    By Blogger MM, at 02:45

  • Kiran More quotes...
More said the committee is looking at giving enough opportunities to youngsters to prove their worth at the top level.

"People like Rao and Raina should be given enough opportunities before the 2007 World Cup. We are looking at the future. Our record in the last 30-40 ODIs has not been good, hence we have to look at new players," he said.

He also added that Dravid has done well for India and he deserves a long run as the captain of the team.
I think it is curtains for SG as captain India (unless RD effs up)

By Blogger losing now, at 02:46

  • the most impressive about this team is that the 1 match performance of ZK has not been rewarded. Wonder when they will do it to AA

    By Blogger cricketmaniac, at 02:47

  • Guys, was GC at the selection meeting?

By Blogger losing now, at 02:49

  • jiet,
i think you forgot another important component that laxman needs to be back:
scoring runs consistently from the first match of the series. not the usual 50-100 in the last match in an effort to keep his place!!
oh also score oney day style not test style.

    By Blogger K-Slice, at 02:49

  • sreesanth of course wont get a game at all, but good job selectors thank you for droppong zk and sg finally and i am sure bhajii will perform better now that alarm bells must be sounding in his ears after getting news of his bffs get dropped.

By Blogger Ruchi Shah, at 02:49

  • Gilly on fire!

By Blogger losing now, at 02:51

  • ruchi
    what exactly are bffs?

    By Blogger K-Slice, at 02:52

  • bff - best friends forever as in pervez musharraf and osama

By Blogger Ruchi Shah, at 02:57

  • k-slice...that's right...Laxman has hit 4 sixes in the 80 plus ODIs...he cannot run between the wickets....he is bad in the field...not an ODI player I am sorry.

    By Blogger Jiet, at 03:00

  • unfortunately yet again the have selected MR. "i give a 4 every over but dont score 4 in 4 innnings" agarkar another chance.
    did i say agarkar?
    my bad i meant duckrkar.
ruchi i completely agree. i hope this lights a blazing flame under bhajjis ass as well as others such as our man veeru. unless their hair gets singed they dont seem to understand that they arent here for fun but to perform.

    By Blogger K-Slice, at 03:07

  • agree with you k-slice, about agarkar, not laxman. I am shocked that Agarkar made it to the side, he is a liability that will bring the Indian Cricket enterprise down down and down. I simply cannot understand why he keeps getting selected, seems like some regional politics or I am just missing the point !!!

    By Blogger MM, at 03:28

  • with viroo i think the problem is different. he is no good as an opener ( in odis). he hasnt fathomed the fielding restrictions and the fact that if he's there after 10 overs, the match is his. i say get him in the middle order where he can accumulate some singles and get a chance to play in the slog overs. he can win games for india.
furthermore any possible vulnerability to a new white ball is avoided.
he seems to believe that he can win a match for india in the first 10 overs and hit out. he has been given that freedom too, and this is not to his or india's advantage.

By Blogger Dhruv Deepak, at 03:28

  • mm
i am from maharashtra hence you can understand the little chip(read block) on the shoulder i have when it comes to bombay players being selected. but when it comes to AA i really cannot fathom why he gets selected. has our selection process become so retarded that they choose players for the sake of it? in that case mumbai, the million time ranji winners already have sachin in the team. if they have to give another mumbai player a chance why not have ramesh pawar, the offspinner in? shit atleast he scores roughpy the same number of runs he gives away.
also mm, as jiet pointed out, lax really hasnt been a good odi player. cant run(weak knee) cant field(weak throw) and scores when it is absolutely neccesary(to save his place not when the team needs him)
just my opinion. you are always free to disagree!

    By Blogger K-Slice, at 03:35

  • GG a bad choice..Will not any game and will be dropped if SG is found fit.And GG would anyways not have been part of the long haul towards WC07,which IMO is a target too far away in the horizon

    By Blogger Ravi1010, at 04:19

  • My replacements:
    agarkar -> vrv singh (fastest)
harbhajan -> vidyut (potential all rounder)
sehwag -> robin utapa (superb opener)
You've got to blood the young guys when they played well, the momentum is so important. Now they'll get a tad discouraged.
Sehwag must be made to sit for sometime in onedays and even if he is back he must play at number 6.His average is in the 20s in the last 1 or 2 years.A shame for an opening batsman. India's decline as a one day team correlates with his form.
Agarkar - enough has been said about him
Harbhajan - right now karthik is good
Uthapa - His challenger trophy century is one of the best one day innings by an indian in a long time in domestic and international cricket as well.

    Playing 12:
    venugopal -> raina
    vidyut -> jpyadav
    vrvsingh (SS) -> sree santh

i doubt robin has what it takes at this moment. let him play domestic for another year atleast before we get him in to the senior side. his innigs in the challenger series, although great, was not chanceless by any standard. lets not rush him and then discard him for years. instead, i feel, it makes more sense to blood him when he is ready. admittedly this should not be 8 years down the line when he is jaded from playing too much domestic cricket.
i agree with replacing bhajji though.
as far as VS goes i think SG getting canned will cause him to fire and rapidly at that!!

  • Compare SG's ignonimous exit with Steve Waugh's..two great captains of recent times. Class shows itself.

  • GC says MK has a grade 1 hamstring injury. He does not say minor injury. Indian scribes are impressed!!!
