Super Test - Day 1

Alright, here we go. The Super Test is about to begin shortly. The weather is expected to play a huge role in this 6 day test which is a shame. With the extra time for the World XI to acclimatize in Sydney, I hope to see a better contest. After the debacle in the ODI series, the players should be charged up to give the Aussies a fight.

Graem Smith's choice of the final eleven was expected with Inzamam finding a position in it. With the ommision of Shaun Pollock, the bowling will be spearheaded by Harmison and Flintoff with Kallis as the third seamer. South Africa has not had spinners of the capability of Vettori and Murali and Smith will be in unchartered territory as far as manning them is concerned.

These are the lineups:
Australia 1 Justin Langer, 2 Matthew Hayden, 3 Ricky Ponting (capt), 4 Michael Clarke, 5 Simon Katich, 6 Shane Watson, 7 Adam Gilchrist (wk), 8 Shane Warne, 9 Brett Lee, 10 Glenn McGrath, 11 Stuart MacGill, 12 Brad Hodge.

World XI 1 Graeme Smith (capt), 2 Virender Sehwag, 3 Rahul Dravid, 4 Inzamam-ul-Haq, 5 Brian Lara, 6 Jacques Kallis, 7 Andrew Flintoff, 8 Mark Boucher, 9 Daniel Vettori, 10 Steve Harmison, 11 Muttiah Muralitharan.

  • Hmm...I would have preferred they drop Kallis and keep Pollock.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 20:07

  • Same thing here, clanzu. Pollock is not bad with the bat at all and miles ahead of the current bowler in Kallis. I would have preferred Inzi out too, in a way. It would have been nice to see Inzi and Akhtar spending time on the sidelines together. 6 days is a long time

  • Aussies win the toss and bat, expected.

    By Blogger Toney, at 20:09

  • What I'd like to happen in this test match :

    - Hayden to fall cheaply in both innings so the Aussie selectors realise their myopic vision.

    - Shane Watson to be hammered around the park and not make a contribution with the bat. That will shut all this premature talk about him being the next Freddie.

    - Dravid & Lara to have a 250 run partnership with both scoring 100's.

    - Lastly but most importantly...World XI to beat these arrogant Aussies and win the Super Series.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 20:21

  • losing now, the Inzi part was in jest, thinking about his close friendship with Akhtar.
And I have this stinking feeling that the Aussies will pummel the WXI.

    By Blogger Toney, at 20:27

  • depends on who voted too :)

    By Blogger Toney, at 20:28

  • Wow didn't expect Harmison to strike so early.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 20:34

  • losing now, I am here, was restarting my PC

    By Blogger Toney, at 20:35

  • and missed Langer's dismissal!! Anyhow, cant understand what use 6-7 batsman are going to do, unless the WXI think they can bat the Aussies out of it and then Murali can weave his web

    By Blogger Toney, at 20:36

  • tc, I think Bond was out injured when the selection happened. At least, they could have chosen Pollock instead of Kallis

    By Blogger Toney, at 20:37

  • losing now, in White Plains, NY

    By Blogger Toney, at 20:37

    By Blogger Toney, at 20:42

  • so far very good quality. And I have never experienced problems except for Ashes T4 and 5 when the traffic was unbelievable high

    By Blogger Toney, at 20:44

  • maybe the players found Pollock's captaincy annoying, so they dropped him to shut him up.

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at 20:44

  • losing now, no guarantee of any matches. They apparently "find" streams which they relay. How it works is: once they find a link, members send in a request to an automated email address and they send back the link. The details in how to email, what to do with the link they give etc are provided on their site

    By Blogger Toney, at 20:46

  • but going by previous history, they should have Ind-SA, Ind-SL, definitely Ind-Eng.

    By Blogger Toney, at 20:47

  • losing now, test cricket is indeed something else. My best series so far, our last one in Aus, paid the whole sum on willow, worth every penny

  • ruchi, then definitely, I am in upstate NY

    By Blogger Toney, at 23:14

  • Wish Sangakarra was there, no byes there then

    By Blogger Toney, at 23:18

  • probably going by sttaitstics alone, Boucher is ahead of Sangakara. But his exp against Murali as well as his batting skills should have ensured KS a place

    By Blogger Toney, at 23:20

  • looks like all the mods are asleep there

    By Blogger Toney, at 23:40

  • the boundaries at SCG arent well protected for that

    By Blogger Toney, at 23:56

  • hayden is another right-handed lefty. but he doesn't seem ambidextrous

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at 23:57

  • dont think most are. In fact, SRT seemed to be the only ambidextrous guy we knew of

    By Blogger Toney, at 23:58

  • First class free audio coverage on radio australia.Just go to www.abc.net.au/cricket and follow the link.jim maxwell, geoff lawson and now the trinidad Commentator Fazeer Mohammed

By Blogger Nearly Man, at 00:30

  • Thanks a lot for that info, nearlyman. Great indeed

    By Blogger krishjapan, at 00:47

  • sanjay manjrekar's dumb comment about senior players in the sub-continent being superstitious about numbers and not batting in certain positions b/c they did not score runs in that position - what a dumbass. His loser stupid mentality paints the picture of the thinking of our team during his time

    By Blogger RandomThoughts, at 00:57

  • manjrekar is a bloody fool. i dont know why ppl think he is a great thinker of the game--he certainly doesnt articulate it.
his commentary is boring and certainly not insightful. his professed knowledge of everything tendulkar is just plain sorry. I dont know what he is doing commentating for the Super Series. Id rather have had even Navjot Sidhu

By Blogger Dhruv Deepak, at 01:33

  • the radio stream is like 20 seconds ahead of sportingstreams. made me dizzy

    By Anonymous Anonymous, at 01:33

  • if you guys are watching the broadcast they showed an ultramotion clip of murali bowling. he isnt chucking

By Blogger Dhruv Deepak, at 01:37

  • Hayden out on nelson.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 02:11

  • India team announced...ZK and SG out

    By Blogger Amit, at 02:26

  • Can you please paste the entire team?

    By Blogger Kh0Pdi, at 02:28

  • thanks, jiet

    By Blogger Kh0Pdi, at 02:33

  • btw is sehwag dropped too?

    By Blogger Kh0Pdi, at 02:35

  • screw laxman he doesnt fit in the team. good stance taken by the bcci finally. you have venu, kaif and dravid to bat solidly. good enough for me

By Blogger Dhruv Deepak, at 02:45

  • dhruv - totally agree w/you re: manjrekar. he has a loser attitude is only interested in individual averages and crap like that. Thankfully this kind of mentality is no longer making its way to the Indian team.

why has Sehwag been dropped from the ODI team ??

    By Blogger RandomThoughts, at 02:45

  • sreesanth of course wont get a game at all, but good job selectors thank you for droppong zk and sg finally and i am sure bhajii will perform better now that alarm bells must be sounding in his ears after getting news of his bffs get dropped.

    By Blogger Ruchi's, at 02:49

  • bff - best friends forever as in pervez musharraf and osama

    By Blogger Ruchi's, at 02:57

  • agree with you k-slice, about agarkar, not laxman. I am shocked that Agarkar made it to the side, he is a liability that will bring the Indian Cricket enterprise down down and down. I simply cannot understand why he keeps getting selected, seems like some regional politics or I am just missing the point !!!

    By Blogger RandomThoughts, at 03:28

  • with viroo i think the problem is different. he is no good as an opener ( in odis). he hasnt fathomed the fielding restrictions and the fact that if he's there after 10 overs, the match is his. i say get him in the middle order where he can accumulate some singles and get a chance to play in the slog overs. he can win games for india.
furthermore any possible vulnerability to a new white ball is avoided.
he seems to believe that he can win a match for india in the first 10 overs and hit out. he has been given that freedom too, and this is not to his or india's advantage.

By Blogger Dhruv Deepak, at 03:28

  • GG a bad choice..Will not any game and will be dropped if SG is found fit.And GG would anyways not have been part of the long haul towards WC07,which IMO is a target too far away in the horizon

    By Blogger RR, at 04:19

  • I liked this font, Toney!
