Ashes T5-Day5 Open Thread

The final day of the great series. The series result is open, the match result is open.

In this test, Aussie have surely been the better side, battling it out in conditions heavily in favor of bowling(the type of conditions, when one decent bowler can run through a good lineup, and Eng had three!). They can still win, although for that they would need a herculean effort from their bowlers. A repeat of Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, on Hayden again, Deano feels he's been given more chances than normal, and yet knows that its not game over for him. "Given enough chances he was always going to make a hundred," said Jones, who claimed that Hayden must now back up with another big score in his next match to repay the enormous faith shown in him.

Good insight in the same article, from reading Boon's comments, about the thinking of the Aussie selectors. Again hints towards more chances coming Hayden's way yet.

Anyways...right now there's some business to be finished, for this Aussie bunch. They may even have to bat again ! Exciting prospect....open thread...

Update on SL-Bdesh game. Since I last reported, Bdesh went on from 155/2 to 188 allout, as only they can! Murali gleefully gobbled up the tail. Bashar made 84 off 96 balls before being unfortunately runout.

  • hi guys, sorry missed the blog yesterday. Was watching the game at regents park- a big screen and all. Too bad about the weather but not many people were complaining

Well, as they say, "It's not over till the fat laddie spins".

    Game on...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 05:28

  • lets see how the Aussies bolwers bowl (I mean McGrath and Lee). Conditions not to different from yesterday when Flintoff/Hoggard were at their Best).

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 05:33

  • saurabh..LOL :)..great one about fat laddie :)

    By Blogger worma, at 05:36

  • saurabh, conditions still overcast etc? Am not watching or listening right now, just following the scores

    By Blogger worma, at 05:38

  • me around k-slice. Working along with the game. If Vaughan gets out, Aus have a good chance, am not so sure of other batsmen in such situation. Meanwhile, keeping an eye on required rate for Aus...its 71 off 90 overs so far...when that goes beyond 3.5-4 I think match would be almost out of their reach

    By Blogger worma, at 06:09

  • 2 in 2

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 06:13

  • game on...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 06:13

  • it's McGrath...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 06:14

  • saurabh what d'ya mean 2 in 2? cricinfo is still showing vaughan out....another one gone???

    By Blogger worma, at 06:15

  • bell for zero...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 06:15

  • mcgrath on hatrick.

ball ballons in the air and Pointing catches....

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 06:16

  • ok, saw it now...bell gone. Yestday in the free time they were discussing that does McGrath have one last magic spell left for the Eng viewers, considering its his last tour also.....so here's the answer :)

    By Blogger worma, at 06:16

  • but Ball hit Peitersen on the elbow. NOT out...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 06:16

  • wicked guy...playing with the sentiments of the cricinfo followers :-)

    By Blogger worma, at 06:17

  • Warne spinning the ball square...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 06:17

  • dropped...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 06:20

  • savage ball...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 06:27

  • turned at right angles and hits tresko on his pads.

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 06:28

  • but not out. Hit outside off and would have missed leg.

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 06:28

  • k-slice, as I said..they can think of chasing anything under 4 rr. right now its 1, with 7 wkts remaining

    By Blogger worma, at 06:31

  • ohh that would be interesting K-slice...chasing 200+ at 5 per over. You think they can do that? Remember, they lost their way yesterday as soon as they thought of accelerating? Maybe the conditions are better today, but still against Eng bowlers...it will have to be a vintage Aus special show

    By Blogger worma, at 06:43

  • third umpire called for,.,,

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 06:44

  • made it...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 06:45

  • peitersen is stupid to have gone for that run...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 06:45

  • England need to keep scoring runs but that was nearly stupid...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 06:46

  • katich hit in the knees. Painful...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 06:47

  • The ball that Warne bowled to Treso that turned square confused Hawk-eye. Aparently, it came back saying "Illeagal delivery" as according to it's parameters, the ball cannot turn that much.

Looks like Warne's too got for technology as well...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 06:49

  • Peitersen drives back to the bowler. Great shot.

McGrath is tiring. Can Lee step-up?

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 06:50

  • sorry that's Lee...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 06:51

  • dropped!!!

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 06:51

  • Warne aT SLIPS...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 06:52

  • saurabh..thats shocking news...because he and Murali would keep turning it that much...and now they are testing official use of Hawkeye !

    Warne dropped one...is he nervous!!

    By Blogger worma, at 06:52

  • k-slice..from what i heard, it was easy by slip standards...Pieterson at 15 then....enjoying the party henceforth..2 sixes and 1 four since then

    By Blogger worma, at 06:59

  • ha ha :)...generous considerate IT service idiot :)

Warne gets Tresco....and KP playing on a lottery....this is a wide open match now !

    By Blogger worma, at 07:04

  • Holy shit I wake up an hour late and the game has turned. This series is destined to be decided on the last ball of the day.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 07:10

  • yeah well..an hour is too much in this series Clannzu..what did you expect ;-)

    By Blogger worma, at 07:12

  • Pieterson continues to play against the spin...Warne would be happy to let him...he can miss one anytime

    By Blogger worma, at 07:16

  • No some pot would be better...calm him down. I don't think that would have gone on to hit the off stump...beginning to doubt Hawk Eye now.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 07:17

  • 121-4

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 07:21

  • Last 10 overs they have scored 46 runs with the loss of 1 wicket.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 07:22

  • FLINTOFF GONE.

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 07:25

  • England need another 80 runs between Lunch and Tea...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 07:25

  • Minimum of 75 overs left for the day. England will need a lead of atleast 250.
A poster in the crowd "I missed my wedding for this."

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 07:27

  • Pietersen using up time by calling the pysio...don't think he was really hit hard on the ribs.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 07:29

  • KP survives another !!...hes just doing that at the moment...I think Eng should start preparing to bowl :)

    By Blogger worma, at 07:33

  • Oh my fucking god...that was a ripper. Pietersen almost falls back on the stumps. Some hostile bowling from Lee.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 07:33

  • lunch.

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 07:34

  • not yet...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 07:34

  • worma, the game is still for England to lose.

Remember, if they get 70-80, Australia have to chase 200 runs in 40 odd overs.

    Not going to be easy...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 07:36

  • what do you guys think..Aus can chase 3+ per over?

    By Blogger worma, at 07:36

  • saurabh I know its close...i just meant eng should start mentally preparing to 'win this game' with bowling...they dont look like lasting long with the bat....mainly because KP is playing like he does...

    By Blogger worma, at 07:37

  • With 4-5 left handers, they will be troubled by that rough which Warne has been exploiting so well. Giles & Flintoff can do the same...

    But 70-80 runs are key...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 07:37

  • I think Aus may chase even 5+ per over...but England can put really defensive fields. I think you're allowed to have all 9 fielders on the boundary.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 07:37

  • but as expected, this is a great game. Another classic!

    4 in a row....

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 07:38

  • I will go under severe depression if England lose this match. But Warne and Lee deserve this for the way they have fought for Oz throughout this series. Warne should get joint man of the series along with Flintoff regardless of the result.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 07:41

  • Clannzu...why would Eng defend, they would probably try to get Aus out. With their attack..its quite possible. I personally am favouring Aus to win this one...they've played way better than Eng in this game..had they won the toss I think it'd been over by now!...anyways...what a game really....cricket would be sooo boring once this series gets over :)

    By Blogger worma, at 07:43

  • and why joint, I think Warne is ahead of Freddie...and if they have to choose one...it should be Warne...there are talks on bbc that they have just one medal so it has to be one player

    By Blogger worma, at 07:45

  • MOM has to be Warne...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 07:48

  • Worma, guess you are not seeing live. This pitch is a minefield now. Will only get worse.

The Aussies will have to really apply themselves to win.

Rememeber, they wil be under pressue to score quickly as well as the overs will be against them. If it's 45 overs to win , Flintoff will bowl about 20 of those and he is extremely difficult to score..

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 07:50

  • worma - I meant if it gets down to Aus needing 100 in the last 10-12 overs with only 2 wickets down...Eng could put more men on the boundary and just 2-3 in the inner circle.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 07:52

  • saurabh...yeah not watching live..but still in my comments above I was trying to say that I dont think its going to be easy for Aus to score above 3+...and Eng should look to win not draw..hence attack. But yes, I am 'wanting' Aus to win this one :)

    By Blogger worma, at 07:54

  • Where is Prem...don't think he is interested in The Ashes like he is for India's matches.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 07:55

  • ok clannzu..I think we are all getting a bit too excited to think straight ;-)..kidding...
..but this is damn exciting...and this would really show if Eng have the nerve to hold on in tense situation..whether they are ready to take over the 'mental' aspect of Aussies also...

...because even in this series Aus have come out winner in the battle of nerves...this is Eng's last chance at redemption....what say?

    By Blogger worma, at 07:56

  • clannzu, I have a feeling Prem is following the game...just not visiting here :)

    By Blogger worma, at 07:57

  • I'm predicting wicket first ball.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 08:15

  • Glad I wasn't right.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 08:16

  • k-slice...I dont know...'good for the game' is too abstract for my brain :)...I feel the 'good' as already been done, and anyways Eng is not loosing, the would be 'drawing' which is good (and forgetting the urn business, which is totally personal matter of Eng and Aus people;) ). I am looking at this game objectively, and Aus seem to deserve to win(unless Eng bowl like hell in second innings). From the series perspective...the full Aussie team(with a fit McG) seems to be close to being equal to full Eng team...so that way a series draw looks justified.

And about the impact on the Aus dominance as such...I dont think it matters...they will be as good(or bad) after drawing as they would have been after loosing this series.

    By Blogger worma, at 08:16

  • and bbc commentators were saying that they would be uncomfortable at anything less than run-a-ball chase for Aus !!..I guess they haven't come out of the old subjugation mentality of Eng

    By Blogger worma, at 08:21

  • Pietersen doesn't back away, does he. Thats why I think he is like Sehwag...doesn't care who is bowling and how the pitch is behaving..he backs himself to make runs.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 08:23

  • thanks kishor_cool...I promise to change ;)

    By Blogger worma, at 08:23

  • 50 for peitersen

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 08:25

  • That was a similar ball that Warne bowled to Pietersen in the 1st innings...he played the same shot and got 2 runs this time to get his 50.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 08:26

  • worma, actually even I don't care who wins even though I have supported England all along.

Actually, all these fair weather fans in this country are begining to irritate me.

60% people in the pole said that Cricket defines Englishness, not Football (Ony 20% said football).

Rubbish!! Ask them what they would really have; The Ashes or the Football World-cup next year.

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 08:28

  • Australia bolwed 26 overs in the first session!!! Ponting should be sacked for that.

Another 26 between Lunch and tea. That leaves 46 overs to be bowled after Tea!!!

Enngland will not bowl too fast (13 an hour has been the rate).

So the Aussies hope to score the runs with headlights on thier helmets!!!

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 08:31

  • Another six by peitersen! That guy is amazing...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 08:31

  • saurabh LOL :-)..yeah I guess you would be facing the reality out there :)...but atleast some of these wud survive in long term...lets see what happens when they loose a few.

    KP continues...

    By Blogger worma, at 08:31

  • and four. Peitersen has decided to put the runs on the board. No point in hanging around...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 08:32

  • another four...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 08:32

  • 68 of 76 balls. The innings of the Ashes so far...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 08:33

  • Hahah...poor Tait is having a hard time in the field. Crowd going after him and he's feeling the pressure. Lee needs to be taken out of the attack...its easy to score off him.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 08:33

  • 96.7 miles an hour and Peitersen does not seem to be bothered.

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 08:33

  • well Lee bowled an excellent over before tea...

    Warne back

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 08:34

  • no way Clannzu..Lee is bowling well...KP is going to go after anyone...and he's anyway not short of strength

    By Blogger worma, at 08:35

  • I try to differenciate between the English Team and their 'supporters' hence still want this team to win.

As a package, I would rather see them lose...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 08:36

  • 160/5 in 43 ovrs KP 68

    By Blogger worma, at 08:36

  • 160-5

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 08:36

  • Not blaming Lee...unfortunately a top edge goes for 6 at his pace. He's more prone to stray in line than McGrath. Give a big thumbs up to Lee for effort...no question about that.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 08:37

  • Warne's not looking as threatening now...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 08:38

  • ..maybe one more over to Lee...he can have a go at Collingwood atleast

    By Blogger worma, at 08:39

  • and collingwood looks the part. In hindsight better choice then Andersen...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 08:39

  • Lee consistenly bowling in mid-90's.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 08:40

  • wow, well left by Collingwood. 95 miles an hours and a bit of reverse...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 08:40

  • Collingwood did not see that ball, hit the pads...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 08:41

  • yeah saurabh..now definitely collingwood better than anderson :)...anderson could have come still be missed..
    ..and another plumb on noball..

    By Blogger worma, at 08:41

  • no-ball and ball was going down leg and a bit high...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 08:41

  • Warne's drop of KP...now this....Aus are missing their chances

    By Blogger worma, at 08:42

  • boycott asking "where is the bat-pad & gully for Collingwood who is still only 1"

Going point. Ponting is rubbish, no matter what the result of this series...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 08:42

  • Billy making a mistake with that no=ball.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 08:42

  • that man peitersen - straight drive for 4

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 08:43

  • saurabh..yes thats one established fact :) His field placements are rubbish

    By Blogger worma, at 08:43

  • oh, oh, oh//

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 08:43

  • another 4. what a shot...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 08:43

  • ok NOW Lee can get that break

    By Blogger worma, at 08:44

  • takes some 'eye' to hit a flat-bat baseball style shot at a ball coming at 95 miles ab hour...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 08:44

  • oh, that must have hurt...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 08:45

  • full blodded shot by Collingwood and hits katich on the ribs

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 08:45

  • 30 minutes after Tea...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 08:46

  • saurabh - either you're the fastest typer here or you're getting the live feed a 2 seconds before rest of us. :-)

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 08:46

  • Warne hasn't bowled googlies since that first day, has he?

    By Blogger worma, at 08:46

  • runs coming with easy now. I think the games already beyond the Aussies now. They need a miricle from Warne now...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 08:47

  • he has bowled only 1 google in the entire series!!!

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 08:47

  • well rr is still under 3...

    By Blogger worma, at 08:47

  • no saurabh, he bowled atleast 2 in the first innings...one of them a long hop

    By Blogger worma, at 08:48

  • Warne should around the wicket.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 08:48

  • McGrath back on

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 08:49

  • tiger I meant rr=required rate (for aus to chase)...thats 180 runs in 66 ovrs so far

    By Blogger worma, at 08:50

  • I want McGrath to get whacked around even more than Lee did.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 08:51

  • Lee smiling and chatting with the crowd...great guy this.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 08:54

  • k-slice...I've been waiting for someone to repoduce the innings Abdul Razzaq & Ijaz Ahmed played in Australia...must be about 5-6 years back when McGrath was hit for 50 runs in his first 5 overs. Don't remeber what his stats were at the end of the match but McGrath was fuming with anger and clueless all the same.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 08:59

  • what happened there Saurabh???????

    By Blogger worma, at 09:00

  • this is interesting. Umpires are discussing if it was a bump ball.

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 09:00

  • not out..

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 09:00

  • clannzu I remember that...esp the Razzaq blitz...first five balls of the over...wacked for 4..fifth ball played back to bowler...McG furiously looks to throw it back to the stump(or almost kill the batsman)..razzaq backs away laughing...the look of McG's face was priceless :)

    By Blogger worma, at 09:01

  • so it was a bump ball???

    By Blogger worma, at 09:02

  • action replays are inclusive so in the end it was a good decision.

But why not ask the Third-umpire? This is when Cricket shoots itself in the foot.

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 09:02

  • It's not out...no matter how much Richie Benaud wants to indicate that it should be out.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 09:02

  • tiger meanwhile great stats that..the num of overs to bat thing

    By Blogger worma, at 09:03

  • Yeah it brushed the ground and hit KP's foot then to Hayden.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 09:03

  • saurabh, i thought close catches could be referred to third ump? why didnt they do it?

    By Blogger worma, at 09:03

  • Razzaq and Ijaz scored 60 of the first 5 overs. But then at the end of the spell Mcgrath figures were 60 odd for 2-3 wickets in 8 overs. He came back at the end to pick up some cheap wickets and make his figure look better.

    By Blogger Mugilan, at 09:05

  • I'm getting a bit tired of this "Richie Benaud's last test match commentating in England."

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 09:13

  • Ponting went up to the umpire to have a 'chat' about the decision. If it was Ganguly/Inzamam/Attapattu, would that have been described as 'dissent' with consequent fines/suspensions ?

    By Blogger BongoP'o'ndit, at 09:15

  • bbc comm still maintaining Aus can chase 6 an over!! Those watching....is it playing that easy? Saurabh, what d'ya say?

    By Blogger worma, at 09:16

  • out...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 09:17

  • warne again.
    Collingwood gone.

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 09:17

  • yeah...KP would need to start having a go again...if hes loosing partners at other end

    By Blogger worma, at 09:18

  • Worma, 6 an over in fading light, thats going to be a tough ask...

Assuming England last another 15 overs, that leaves Austrlia to score 250 in 45 overs.

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 09:19

  • worma - there is lots of spin on the pitch. McGrath not looking that effective right now. Chasing 6 an over won't be easy but I won't put it out of Australia's reach.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 09:19

  • ooops...that was 'losing' not loosing...sorry kishore ;)....(muttering to myself...L O S I N G..losing...losing)

    By Blogger worma, at 09:20

  • Not till Giles gets out...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 09:20

  • Collingwood played his part...Benaud said "years from if someone were to ask him what his best innings was...he might as well say the 5 I got at the Oval in the last test of The Ashes."

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 09:22

  • bowl outside the leg side with a 7-2 field. What do the batsmen do to a ball coming at 90 miles an hour?

But again, lets wait and see.

England need to get out first...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 09:22

  • considering he might not play again, i think so...

By Blogger Saurabh Wahi, at 09:23

  • and why wouldnt Eng try to win?...if they do try...then they'll bowl positively...

    By Blogger worma, at 09:24

  • Umpiring has been good today...don't think they've made any blunders yet.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 09:26

  • What a leave from G. Jones !!!

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 09:28

  • yeah jiet...its a tough call...but Eng will have to make it righ at the start...because if they bowl positively....they might risk having the match out of their reach by the time they go back to defending....
..but still some way to go...

    By Blogger worma, at 09:29

  • Hi guys, I have been following for quite some time (all through the Ashes, but never actually got around to setting up a blog). I am watching the match....absorbing stuff.

By Blogger Jaunty Quicksand, at 09:30

  • KP batting well against McGrath...not taking any risks.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 09:30

  • tiger: NO :)

    By Blogger worma, at 09:30

  • Cooming round the wicket, I think McG is setting up KP for the full-toss (attempted yorker) by which he got him in the 3rd Test, 2nd innings, I believe. A few short balls, and then BANG!

By Blogger Jaunty Quicksand, at 09:32

  • jaunty...you are correct. :-)

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 09:33

  • Every one will be happy if England win this series ? Any one disagrees ???

  • Help! Is there anyway I can automatically have the "comments" window refresh without me having to manually do it to see if any new comments have been posted?

By Blogger Jaunty Quicksand, at 09:35

  • shyam I disagree....and stated the reasons above

    By Blogger worma, at 09:36

  • What the hell was that...Warne coming back over the wicket and first ball KP takes a wild swing. The ball spun miles and missed his bat.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 09:36

  • England deserves to win this Test Series. They narrowly missed to win the Third Test.

By Blogger Shyam Prasad, at 09:37

  • A streaker runs on the field just as Tait is about to bowl...aah this is brilliant. :-))))

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 09:39

  • tiger..I hope not...but anyways...for record...I am not an Aussie fan, hate them more than Eng...but there are some short and long term reasons why i dont want them to loose the series....some other time maybe we can discuss it fully :)

    By Blogger worma, at 09:39

  • What pleasure do these streakers get when they invade the field? As the commentator said - its a waste of ticket

By Blogger Jaunty Quicksand, at 09:39

  • England deserves to win this Test Series. They narrowly missed to win the Third Test.

By Blogger Shyam Prasad, at 09:39

  • Tiger, thanks...I am doing that...I was hoping there was an easier "self-propelling" option!! :-)

By Blogger Jaunty Quicksand, at 09:40

  • Worma, Do you agree that England narrowly missed the Third Test Win ???

By Blogger Shyam Prasad, at 09:41

  • Bang! Bang! KP welcomes Tait.

By Blogger Jaunty Quicksand, at 09:41

  • shyam Aus almost won the second test (and the last wicket also was a wrong decision). Anyways..if they(Eng) loose this game, dont they deserve to loose it?

    By Blogger worma, at 09:41

  • Since Flintoff is there, It is not going to be a Easy for "Older" Australian Players

By Blogger Shyam Prasad, at 09:42

  • Tait bowled KP !!! what an 'inspired' move by RP :)

    By Blogger worma, at 09:42

  • Ooooooh! Another turn!

By Blogger Jaunty Quicksand, at 09:43

  • I want to get on board with worma and say I am not going to be happy if Eng win the series. While I'm not the biggest Aussie fan around, I hate the Poms more.

By Blogger Gopal Bhagavatula, at 09:43

  • oops..that was Jones...the beeb comms were so excited they werent mentioning the name for so long

    By Blogger worma, at 09:44

  • gopalblog...no matter what reason mate, alteast u supporting ;)

    By Blogger worma, at 09:45

  • Who cares which team is happy...I am just glad Test cricket is so exciting to the general audience again. (I have always preferred Tests and feared for it's future with every 5-Test series that turned into a 3-Tests, 7-ODI slugfest).

By Blogger Jaunty Quicksand, at 09:45

  • worma - England out-played Australia in the last 3 tests...this one has been pretty much even...you could say OZ batted better but I don't completely agree with that..Hayden & Langer were the only ones who were able to contend with the swing bowling of Hoggard & Flintoff.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 09:45

  • soo the old ball is reversing...but wonder if Eng will get to the point of reversing, if they get to bowl

    By Blogger worma, at 09:46

  • Ravi - I so hope that happens.
Jaunty - you're not alone here in that thought.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 09:47

  • If they clean up England now...they will have 50 overs to defend approximatel 200. Enough time for them to reverse swing, I think, worma. But will the Aussies take that long to track down the runs (assuming it happens).

By Blogger Jaunty Quicksand, at 09:47

  • Amen to the test vs ODI sentiment Jaunty Quicksand.

A few more series like this and maybe the equation will tilt towards more tests and less ODIs.

By Blogger Gopal Bhagavatula, at 09:49

  • clannzu, I said earlier, but repeat again. The Eng team, to me, seems pretty much even with a full Aus team(with a fit McG). Sure they dominated last three games, but Aus still managed to give them a scare in all three, so they are way better in mental game. And this game, they are not as good as Aus...the conditions in which Aus had to bat were way too difficult...a single decent bowler could have run through a good lineup in an inspired spell(something like Agarkar or Khan running through Aus down under)..given these conditions. And also, Eng didnt have to be tested any time this series by starting their first innings chasing 400+ (toss factor)...sure its not Eng's fault....but I'm just trying to compare the two teams on an even scale....I think they are pretty close...

    By Blogger worma, at 09:49

  • gopalblog, yes, it has always rankled me that India-Australia played 5-Test match series in the days when India was not that great and now they play 3 (or 4?!!) Test match series...all for the sake of a few measly one-dayers that are so frequent that they blur from memory.

By Blogger Jaunty Quicksand, at 09:51

  • worma - I disagree but we will continue this discussion some other time. :-)

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 09:51

  • Clannzu, yes, I put the blame fairly and squarely on the BCCI for this reduction in Tests....

Super shot by KP! Rolling along here. I hope he gets the hundred he now deserves.

By Blogger Jaunty Quicksand, at 09:55

  • jiet..ok agreed..no point talking about decisions. and clannzu...totally agreed...now its too exciting to 'debate' anything. First lets see if Aus manage to win this game...if they dont then they anyway didnt come out equal to eng...that kills all debate

    By Blogger worma, at 09:55

  • worma, In the three tests that McG playes, Aussies are 1-0 and this one is ??? But in the years past the same was said of the England side...if only X was healthy or if only Y had not been given out, etc. I think you have to take things as they happen and without looking at what-if's to judge what has transpired. My opinion after all this rambling is that England are leading 2-1, ergo, the better side in this series so far (ignoring the rub of the green and all that jazz).

By Blogger Jaunty Quicksand, at 09:57

  • Setting up for a googly?!!

By Blogger Jaunty Quicksand, at 09:58

  • Hmmm, maybe THAT is the mystery ball for Warne in this series - the googly! Wouldn't that be ironic? :-)

By Blogger Jaunty Quicksand, at 09:58

  • Over rate has been 12.3 overs per hour. Incredible if the match refree does not take any action.

You's think the Aussies would bowl a little quicker since overs are the one luxury they cannot affor to be prodigal about.

By Blogger Jaunty Quicksand, at 10:04

  • jaunty I agree with your simple result based logic, Eng are 2-1 ergo better. So if Aus win this one 2-2 they are 'equal' ?

    By Blogger worma, at 10:06

  • Actually, if the situation does come about where the English batsmen are still holding on, I'd say declare the innings and rub it in by making the Aussies bat for, say, 10-15 overs!! :-)

By Blogger Jaunty Quicksand, at 10:06

  • asking RR is upto 4.6.

By Blogger Gopal Bhagavatula, at 10:07

  • 100 for KP...alright now lets get 3 wickets to get an awesome run chase on!!

By Blogger Gopal Bhagavatula, at 10:09

  • Yes, worma, in my simplified logic - absolutely. 2-2 would be the "equal" tag the Aussies are striving for.

Creating winning opportunities and winning are two different beasts. In the end, the better team (or the equal team) prevails. So, yes, I stand by what I said.

By Blogger Jaunty Quicksand, at 10:09

  • Brilliant innings by KP...he should have caught thrice but he didn't back away from the battle.

    By Blogger ClannZú, at 10:10

  • then we didn't have any disagreements to start with, jaunty.

    By Blogger worma, at 10:10

  • Great innings from KP and to think the selectors were not going to select him into the test team at the begining of the ashes!

By Blogger Gopal Bhagavatula, at 10:11

  • Tiger,

If England survive for another 30 overs, then they would have put on about a 100 more, at least. Therefore asking the Aussies to chase 300 in 10 overs is not a cause for worry, but will re-inforce to the Aussies that England still had the upper hand. Remember Inzy doing that in Kolkatta, I think (?) recently.

Of course, all this is looking too far ahead....so lets set aside this chain of thought for some time!! :-)

By Blogger Jaunty Quicksand, at 10:11

  • Ah, Tiger, yes...thats right, Mohali it was. Completely different situation, but my reasoning would stay the same.

If/when the above scenario comes up, I shall post my reasoning for wanting to put the opposition in. But there is still time for the Test to take a turn, so I shall desisit.

By Blogger Jaunty Quicksand, at 10:21

  • Tiger, Can you really see the ultra-conservative approach of the Indians changing? I think Balaji will be put out to pasture, ferrying drinks, while Zaheer and Pathan will partner AK and HS...and we bat all the way to SG, who will have to save us from the inevitable batting collapse.

By Blogger Jaunty Quicksand, at 10:25

  • Oh wait, I completely forgot...SRT is not playing. Hmmmm, what will they do with that spot? Of course, take YS, naturally, since he was just a temporary opener in Pakistan, playing on team orders at an unnatural position and he is really a middle-order batsman who is next in the rolling derby we call a middle-order spot. And MK will be the 12th man.

(BTW, if you cannot detect a disgruntled tone about team selection and strategy from the above paragraph, I am saying clearly that there IS one).

By Blogger Jaunty Quicksand, at 10:28

  • jaunty - I would like to see India go in with 5 bowlers (ZK, IP, LB, + AK, HS). Getting a big score I don't see as our big problem. Getting the 20 wickets (even ZIM) is the achilles heel I think.

By Blogger Gopal Bhagavatula, at 10:33

  • goplablog,

Yes, yes, and more yes's! If 5 batsmen cannot suffice against the cannon fodder we call the Zimbabwe attack (barring Streak to an extent) then I am not sure what we can really do against the bigger guns.

But I am guessing that we shall overestimate our batting foibles (plug in the extra batsman to protect against a collapse) and underestimate our bowlers, tiring them out should a run-fest commence and then rue that the bowlers are not doing their jobs, while the batsmen are "in fine touch, just a little unlucky with the way they got out". *sigh*
